talkofthetown - > Talk of the Town -> Should we keep the penny?
Should we keep the penny?
There is a wire report out that says folks are once again debating whether we should give the noble penny the heave-ho.

Apparently it actually costs more than a penny to make each penny these days.

I love the penny as much as the next guy, but I think I could live without the little copper fella. I end up dumping them into a jar anyway and when I take them in to those coin counters at the grocery story they barely are worth the trip.

What do you think? Should we scrap the penny?

DocMason,

Your so right! I remember the Euro when it was .80 to a dollar and now it cost 1.30 to buy one Euro,

Russia and the middle east are moving more of their cash reserves to the Euro and reporting cash flow in
Euro rather than dollars. The dollar is on the decline and  Bush & team do nothing about it.

posted by Hardliner4freedom on Jan 2, 2007 at 09:47 AM

No DoctorMason, we just suffered a temporary distraction by helping show people how to insert images.  Nothing more sinister.

And the "Blog Police" emblem is just a humorous embodiment of a blog joke -- "the blog police."  Nothing more serious.  :-)

We can tell from the accent, Jason.

DoctorMason, are you referring to me or to Hardliner's profile photo?  Either way, no, your subject is in no way taboo, and I apologize for, as Nancy called it, aiding and abetting a topic hi-jack.  I came in to respond to some commenters' technical issues that came up when they were commenting on this post.  That is all--it wasn't an editorial commentary or anything like that.  If you post on your blog on this topic, it will come up in the current "new blog posts" queue (as opposed to this post, which originated in June), and perhaps more folks will see it and participate--plus it will have the advantage of being a fresh post unencumbered by a thread of off-topic comments.  Again, I apologize (I'm not from here either, you know.)
posted by randomfactor on Jan 2, 2007 at 09:38 AM

We apppreciate it, Doc, and we'll call off the dogs. :)

.

Seriously, though, it's not taboo.  Apparently the Euro is now the #1 international currency of choice over the dollar, too.

http://www.dailykos.com/sto...

.

I wonder if Gresham's Law applies internationally.  Probably not--too many alternatives available.

The US should chuck the penny and maybe even the nickle. Also, I favor in getting rid of the paper dollar and replacing it w/ a coin dollar, also why not have a 2 dollar coin...such as the Euro & Peso.

posted by DoctorMason on Jan 2, 2007 at 09:26 AM

Talking about the falling US Dollar must be taboo in Bakersfield because when the Blog Police arrived the conversation changed. I'm not from here and need to know the rules, and apologize if I've made a mistake. Fact is, if you take $10,000 outside America today, you'd get $5000.00

When I arrived in CA in 2000, the euro was only .80c, now it's $1.30 resulting in a 50% loss in my savings. And as I pointed out earlier, when you do a search on "dumping us dollars" you realize the gravity of what is happening. Even if you don't travel outside the continential US, you should take heed, IMHO.

But again, if this topic is taboo here on this site, then I'll NEVER mention it again.

A theory of mine..I have a million of them.  Is that when someone asks a question, a lot of people benefit from the answer.  Even people we aren't aware are around.  Putting up a dedicated site is a good idea.

Happy New Year to you too Jason.  I guess we weren't too rough on you since you're still here.  Thanks for all your help.

Some individuals, besides leaving me notes in comments, e-mail me when they have problems.  But obviously, people seem to enjoy talking about them and sharing experiences or fixes or ideas about them.  So, perhaps, when someone comes up against a problem and wants to solicit feedback, one could e-mail me and I'll put up a dedicated post on Blogging Bako.  Sound good?  :)

Happy New Year, Nancy, and all of you.  Thanks for a fun and interesting first couple months on the job.  Can't wait to see what we build together in 2007.

P.S.  Pennies!  Pennies!  Pennies!

Hey Jason..I've always gone off topic but I'm not the one who gently scolded us for doing that soooo  you can't say I'm a overcooked cooking vessel talking about a water heating round vessel.  So there..neener neener.

And besides..Sam started it.  Pffftttt...  (sorry Sam..no offense, I just have to win this argument)

AND..just to stay on topic here..a penny for your thoughts.

When I just dragged and dropped this graphic, my cursor was a slashed-circle "no" symbol, but it still worked!  Go figure.  As you've pointed out from my keen use of technical jargon, I'm no techie.  :)  That's what I've got our crackerjack "development team" for!  (And Hardliner.)  ;)

But yes, drag-n-drop, copy-paste, either way, it's a usable shortcut vs. the "insert/edit image" function.  (A.k.a. mountain thingie.)

And dear Nancy, not to say you're a cooking receptacle calling me a larger, dark-colored cooking receptacle, but I've been reading your back-and-forth about, what was it? Drugs?  On a post about...  Oh, right.  Bullies.  :)  Heh.

LOL Audrey..me too.  I'm a firm believer in thingamajigs, whatchamacallits and doodads.  When you want to get really hight tech..just call on me..I have an entire vocabulary for it.

Guys..by drag and drop are you talking about copy and paste?  That's all I did.  I drag and drop in emails but when I tried it here I got the circle slash for a no go.

AHEM Jason..site help yes..but what does it have to do with pennies????  Hmmmmmm?????

Yep...  Some things I just don't like leaving posted for long -- only long enough for the intended target to read it.  :-)

Apologies for the digs at the Californian's hiring policies, but employers who erect silly and arbitrary barriers have always been a pet peeve in my craw -- even though I'm not currently in the job market.

Some bright yet inexperienced kid somewhere is.

Then why'd you take it down?  (That was you, right?)  :)
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Dec 29, 2006 at 04:03 PM
I'm soooooo glad you fixed it. You're right it doesn't hurt to apply, but in my experiences here in this town, if you don't have the "on paper" qualifications they won't give you the time of day.

BTW, does anyone else see the humor in the url html tag that says the image can't be displayed? I laughed when I read that.

The image “<a href=http://louisville.edu/~acmu... cannot be displayed, because it contains errors." />
posted by Hardliner4freedom on Dec 29, 2006 at 04:02 PM

I sure did see it, Jason.  I just felt the urge to show off.  :-)

posted by jasonsperber on Dec 29, 2006 at 03:58 PM

Pete, I think we're safe with your pictures of toast in all its myriad variations.  :)  We're still trying to figure out why the url html tags are bleeding through when you drag-n-drop, though.  :(

And didn't you and H4F see what I wrote earlier?  "And by the way, that formatting-truncation-while-logged-out problem is fixed in beta, the fix will go live with the next roll-out of updates (early Jan. probably)."  I've been playing with it/testing it in beta--it works.  It just won't be on the live site just this second.  And anyway, it's probably a good idea to make sure you're logged in to your account right when you open up the site, before you start blogging/commenting.

BTW, I'm told that we always had drag-n-drop capability, so Nancy, I don't know why you weren't able to do it successfully before.

And H4F, dude, if you really wanna work somewhere, it doesn't hurt to apply even if the published prerequisites are a mile long--if the folks doing the hiring like what they see on paper enough to schedule an interview, you can always explain and negotiate then.  Sometimes those things are more wish lists than litmus tests.  (Sometimes not, but still...)  As for me and this particular job, this is not an IT job--if it was, this former high school social studies teacher turned blogger wouldn't be here!

Yep, it's the sign in thing that cuts off comments. It cut off this picture since I wasn't logged on. Lucky for you I didn't close the other window.  You might just regret showing me how to put pics in.

Nice screen cap H4F. Jason, I just dragged-n-dropped it from another site ( I guess that's obvious). I tried doing the insert/edit thing and it just seemed like too much trouble. Especially if it's only a picture of toast.

posted by Hardliner4freedom on Dec 29, 2006 at 03:34 PM

Just bein' helpful.

Don't worry; your job is secure.  I lack the pages and pages and pages of formal qualifications needed to even be considered for any IT job there.

Dang H4F, you're too fast for me, and what skillz, yo!  You trying to take my job or something?  :)

<a href=Okay, in the Leave A Comment box, a.k.a. "the rich text editor" or RTE, in the second line of icons, second from the right, that's the "little mountain thingie," a.k.a. "insert/edit image."

As for hi-jacking, well...  This is site business, isn't it?  :)  And it's my job to help folks use the site?  :)  And plus, the original post is from 6/27, the thread went thru 7/5, and got revived 2 days ago, so, well...

As for why it didn't work for you before, that might have been before we rolled out 2.0.  (Tom, when did you start doing the drag-n-drop vs. the "insert image button" method?)

Hey Pete..all it takes is a blonde to ask for you.  Saves face and no one expects her to know without asking.

By the way..what little mountain thingy..where ae you finding that?

Jason..you're aiding and abetting a highjacking ya know.  For shame.

posted by jasonsperber on Dec 29, 2006 at 03:18 PM

Okay, is this what happened, Pete?

Did you embed the picture via the "insert/edit image" button in this RTE?  (The little mountain thingie.)  If so, did you paste the URL of the picture in both the field marked "URL" and the field directly below it marked "alternative text"?

posted by jasonsperber on Dec 29, 2006 at 02:51 PM

Glad that worked out for you, Pete.  And by the way, that formatting-truncation-while-logged-out problem is fixed in beta, the fix will go live with the next roll-out of updates (early Jan. probably).

Re: the url showing up next to your pic in the comment--what method did you use, the drag-and-drop?  That's weird.  Didn't appear on the pic of Nancy's logo I dragged over, nor in the pic H4F embedded.  But I know I've seen the phenomenon here recently.  Hmmm...

posted by Hardliner4freedom on Dec 29, 2006 at 02:46 PM

I've never had the URL appear like that.

It looks like we found another bug?

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Dec 29, 2006 at 02:40 PM
Does it always have to include the url or is there some way to hide that?
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Dec 29, 2006 at 02:39 PM
Jason, I don't think I was logged on yet. We'll say that's a yes.

Thanks for the picture posting tips guys. I've been unable to do that sofar, but was too proud to ask.

Joe, I never thought about the ole' simple drag-and-drop.  That's what I get for always doing things the hard way.

Nancy, I just dragged your profile pic into this comment.  Uploading a picture from your computer into your Bakersfield.com "My Media" folder, where it will then have a URL that you can copy and paste as Pete described, isn't much harder.  Neither require you to know HTML.

Pete, H4F, and Tom, thanks for the tech-question pitching in, as usual.  :)  And I know you hate to hear this from me, but re: the format-change-leading-to-text-truncation problem, "we're working on it!"  (Really, we are--along with a whole bunch of new features and products that you'll love, trust me.)  But your help on figuring out problems is priceless, and what interactivity and community is all about.

Pete, one last thing--you read Tom's description of the problem, right?  Were you logged out at the time you made the formatting change and then submitted?  Thanks!

posted by NancyII on Dec 29, 2006 at 01:36 PM
Sooooo..it IS like I used to have to do.  I guess I still have that account on AOL.  Ebay developed the ability for you to pull your pics just like you do here with the browse feature.  The other way is too much trouble.  Or I'm to  lazy.  :-)
posted by TomW on Dec 29, 2006 at 01:34 PM
Nancy, if the picture is already on the web somewhere like a photobucket account, just drag and drop it in the text window.  If not, just use the button that looks like a mountain range w/ the sun behind it.  Then you have to upload it to the server and go from there.
posted by NancyII on Dec 29, 2006 at 01:33 PM

I don't change colors or font in posts...I just plug along.  Besides I very rarely hit that post button before saving it.  I've learned my lesson by golly.  About as adventuresome as I get is to use bold or underline.

Now..about that ability to post pictures..please don't tell me I have to use html.  I haven't done that since I used to have to do it selling on ebay.

(edited)  ok ok ok..http...I forgot my h's

posted by Hardliner4freedom on Dec 29, 2006 at 01:30 PM

First, Nancy, the picture that you want to embed in a blog comment has to have a URL (an "http:" link).  There are two ways to do this:

Find a picture of your liking on the Web and copy the URL, or upload an image of your choosing to your own blog space using "Upload media."

If you use the Upload Media, the next step after you upload it is to go to the Show Pictures page, and copy the URL of the image as it's stored in your blog space.  Mouse over the name, right-click, and do "Copy Shortcut."

Then use the Insert/Edit Image button inside the Leave A Comment box (the little yellow button with the mountain inside), and paste the URL into the appropriate input box.

Watch your Rook!

Nancy, They're just common bugs that we run across and we're trying to help "the team" fix them. It's really annoying to have a long post get cut off because you're trying to emphasize something. If it hasn't happened to you, just wait. It will.
posted by NancyII on Dec 29, 2006 at 01:22 PM

You guys are talking greek to me.  But that's ok..as long as you guys know what you're talking about that's all we need.

Now..someone tell me how to put pictures in someones elses blog.  I can do in on mine but not on any other.

Pete wrote, "Jason, I resized text to medium and it cut off the rest of the post. It's either firefox doing it or some sort of text formatting issue. The same html type page with one line of text popped up for a half second. "

Yes, Jason, when is that fix coming along?  :-)

Pete, I managed to grab screen captures of that momentary flash that you have seen.  The development team has them now.

It shouldn't be difficult to fix.  The bug is easily and reliably repeatable.  Just sign off, write a post with an embedded format change, and submit it.  After being asked to sign in, the screen flashes momentarily with the text that is in the process of being dropped.

Repeatable bugs are the easiest ones to find.

[See post immediately above for an example.  It's this post, being cut off at the point where I made a color change.]

Jason, I resized text to medium and it cut off the rest of the post. It's either firefox doing it or some sort of text formatting issue. The same html type page with one line of text popped up for a half second.

Here's what cut off let's see if it does it again.
