Government protecting us from ourselves again?
Looks like Congress is moving closer to banning online gambling.
To be honest I just don't understand this. I guess the argument is that gambling ruins peoples lives and leaves them broke. Well so does alcohol. But we're not banning that. Of how about love? Man, if you don't roll the dice right on that one you can end up broke and heartbroken. Maybe we need a bill on that too. The only thing that keeps me from being outraged by this is that I know they won't ban online gambling in the end. This is apparently a $12 billion industry. That kind of money can pay for lots of campaign contributions. -Davin McHenry 8 comments from 6 users

Well, Davin, government *DOES* restrict access to both alcohol and love (or, at least, marriage.) But you're right, King Canute won't roll back the waves Internet-surfers ride to offshore sites. . The question to ask is, will the online gaming industry outbid the ground-based gaming industry? Republican politicians are for sale to the highest bidder, and Abramoff owned quite a few, including several here in California. Most likely *THEY* are the ones backing this move. Note how horse racing and state lotteries are exempt from the regulation? . The worst government money can buy. . Not to worry. "The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it," as the old saying goes. Of course, you wouldn't be able to cry "foul" if they didn't hand over your winnings... posted by

The biggest problem is that the government can't collect any revinue from online gambling. Most "regulated" gambling is taxed. I imagine that people can claim gambling losses from online gambling, so the govt would lose even more $$$. I'm guessing that's also the reason that pot is still illegal. How can the government get revinue from something that anyone with dirt and water can grow in their backyard. I think RF is correct. This has Abramoff all over it. Funny how his influence is still being felt in congress. He did buy a lot of favors. Keep the internet free and neutral. posted by

Online gambling is especially wrong because people who play on computers are just weird and need help. So I'm in favor of the government cracking down on online gambling. I don't want Vegas to dry up. Just think of how many card clickers will lose their job. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go play golf so I can bet against my buddies in the government free zone of tee one to green 18. posted by

Steve, My husband is playing golf today and will be playing in a tourniment this weekend. He buys into his team and then if they win he gets paid a large prize. (I don't exactly know what it is called) but, I say it is gambling, he says it is not. Ha ha :-D posted by

Erick:
The government only exists to:
1. Perpetuate itself at all cost. 2. Tax the citizens as much as possible short of rebellion 3. Give the citizens only what is necessary to keep them happy enough to insure number one and number two above: Want welfare? Sure! Just remember it was me that got it for you when you vote! Want a new Highway??? You Betcha! Just remember me when it's time to vote!
Cynical observation, but oh so true!
