Have you spotted a mountain lion or bobcat?
So reporter Gretchen Wenner has a story about some bobcat sightings along the river. She even went out with a video camera to try to find one of these critters.

There is nothing like an alleged bobcat or mountain lion sighting to get the newsroom fired up. I think it has something to do with all the cat owners we've got around here.

So have you folks seen any big cats roaming around Bakersfield recently?

Do you even pay attention when sightings are publicized?

I know several locations in Kern County where Bob Cats,  Mountain Lions, and Bears live and/or hang out.  It's quite common actually, being so close to the Mountains.

We live near the Rancho Rio Stables off Manor.  My spouse rides horses on the trails along the river both toward Coffee Rd and Hart Park.  See occasionally sees bobcats but has never seen a mountain lion.  Riding the trails for 30 years...no mountain lion.

Left to go deer hunting about 5 years ago .  The mountain lion was laying in the road at Miramonte and 178.  4am in the morning.

Just North of that intersection towards the Kern River, while mountain biking, I saw a mountain lion sitting at the edge of a grape vineyard just flicking its tail.  About 50 yds away.  This was probably the same cat that I had seen later in the year in the road.

I forgot to mention badgers.  I've seen two badgers since I arrived in Kern County, almost 30 years ago.

After reading the story about the bobcats, I recall a couple of months ago while on an early morning jog on the bike path at Coffee Rd. , I saw what I believe was a mountain lion, the size, and the light colored beige coat and long tail that curled outward just before touching the ground,  leads me to believe it was a mountain lion. I went on the Internet to view picture's of mountain lions and it pretty well was identical to what I saw. The large cat stopped a couple of time's to watch me while I was jogging, but decided to continue on it,s way.

I've spotted bobcats twice on the bike trail.  First time was near where the River Walk park is now, very large for a bobcat and not afraid of me at all.  The other was below the bluffs just east of Manor, trotted across the path, under a fence  and crossed the canal via a footbridge [?].

I have encountered two separate bobcats while riding out on the west end of the bike path. The first was in early summer. I came upon a small bobcat (about 20 pounds) about 1.5 miles east of Enos Lane that had just nabbed a critter for breakfast. Came upon the second bobcat about 3 weeks ago near the same spot, around 2 miles east of Enos. It was a bit larger (25-30lbs) and had more prominent markings and had also just caught a rabbit. Neither seemed to mind my presence and neither presented any kind of threat. I have also encountered coyote in the area.

I was riding my bike to work this morning (Monday August 2nd) and saw the vicious creature behind the RiverWalk Amphitheater at approximately 7:40am.

I was riding east on the bike path when I saw, from a distance, what appeared to be a large cat. As I neared the beast I noticed it was clearly not a domestic feline. This, my friends, was a predator on the prowl.

I feared for my life as I remembered that my packed lunch, a healthy portion of delicious tri-tip, was only a thin piece of nylon and a Ziploc baggie away from the carnivorous villain. I pedaled for dear life and am glad to say I survived – lunch and all.

Indeed it was a near death encounter. But it was better than driving on Rosedale Highway.

When I was in high school (long ago and far away) I worked at a service station for extra money.  One Friday night I was busy getting ready to close the station when a final car came in for gas.   I put my chicken sandwich down and pumped their gas, collected the money and went back to my sandwich.

You can imagine my surprise when I discovered a bobcat had entered the office and was in the process of eating my sandwich.   I don't know why,  but the bobcat didn't run away when I entered the office.  She just looked up at me, then continued to eat.   I went behind the desk and walked right up to the bob cat (I was a lot more stupid when I was a teenager).  The cat still wasn't impressed.  She just continued to eat MY lunch.  I reached out to stroke the bobcats fur fully expecting the bobcat to boogie on out of the office into the night.  She just continued to eat and I stroked her fur for a couple minutes completely impressed with myself for my bravery.

Finally, the bobcat finished eating and just sat there looking at me.  The bobcat showed no interest in leaving the office so I gently picked her up and (stupidly) put her in my car for the short ride to my house.

In retrospect, I should have never taken her home but at the time it seemed like the right thing to do.  Bad-Ass (the name my friends gave her) never so much as hissed at me the entire time I had her.  When she didn't like something or someone, she just left the room and hid in my bedroom until she felt like coming out.

She liked to be petted and she liked to be left alone but she absolutely loved the raw chicken she got fed every day.

I managed to keep this cool critter in my house for over a year with no problems whatsoever until she kicked the snot out of a neighbors Doberman.  My neighbor called the police, who called fish & game, who wrote me a ticket and took the cat.

Some folks have no sense of humor.

Bad-Ass WAS a bad-ass but she was also a really cool personality:  Arrogant, loveable, and tolerant of an ignorant teenager.

I haven't had a cat since.
