Do you need to be protected from hotel porn?
Phil Burress, a self-described ex-porn addict, is doing what he can to ensure than you don't succumb to his former addiction.

To that end, he is trying to keep porn out of hotel rooms.

He heads the Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values and has pressured about 15 Ohio and Kentucky hotels to stop offering adult movies.

He contends such movies make hotels "as dangerous as environments around strip joints and porn stores."

He concedes he is unable to cite specific cases.

Hilton and Marriott responded by saying hotel guests have the options to watch or not watch, and they have the option to block out such movies.

Kathy Shepard of Hilton (some relation to Paris Hilton who has unwittingly starred in her own porn video) said of such attempts, "In their zest to have their personal morals prevail, they're eliminating choice for others."

What do you believe should be done, or not done, on this issue?

I think we should protect people like Mr. Burress from themselves by putting them into straightjackets and locking them in asylums. They obviously don't have a stable foothold in reality, or their own actions, and we have institutions to take care of people who are unwilling or unable to take care of themselves. Involuntary acting out can be medicated, or treated through therapy, or institutionalized so that trained professionals can help them with their disorders. Trying to get the government involved is like suing the DMV for giving you a drivers license and "permitting" you to drive drunk. People like Mr. Burress should be ridiculed, should be ignored, always countered by others, and should never ever be allowed into a position of power over other people.

There is no need to "protect" people from things that are harmless.  That's like claiming that we need to protect people from nitrogen.

I know that group.  They are everything that I despise most.  Cincinnati is the appropriate place for them; Cincinnati is the most sex-terrified city in the most sex-terrified state in the union.

I can say that because I grew up in the Great Lakes area and know the mindset well.

I would add that the Middle East has all the sex-terrified censorship that Burress could dream for -- yet everyone knows what a murderous, violent hell-hole that part of the world is...

The other pattern that I notice is how many of these "crusaders" describe themselves as "ex-porn addicts."  It's very common.

This tells me that they are projecting their own (unwarranted) guilt and weaknesses onto the rest of us.  They couldn't handle freedom, so they figure the rest of us can't, either.

I already am protected.  It's called the remote.

I would love for someone from this group to come to town and urge the City Council to pass an oridnance like that. I would stand up to support them 100%, and ask the City to add a ban on Victoria's Secrets catalogs, wearing suimsuits at Lake Ming, and Sunday ads in the paper that include pictures of women in underwear. Why warn them of slippery slopes when it is so much more fun to take them out to ski down them?

I'm not sure, Hardliner.  I'm a scuba diver, so I actually do worry about nitrogen.  :)
As for protecting people from porn, maybe he should tell the people at the desk to block it before he checks in.  "No matter what I do or what I say or what you hear from inside my room, for the love of all things holy don't unlock the porn channel.  Do you understand?"

Don't laugh.  I lived in Saudi Arabia for a year when I was a kid while my dad worked for Bechtel.  All of our catalogs had all of the women's arms, legs and torsos that were uncovered blacked out with markers.

Free speech at its best, from our "friends" in free Democratic Saudi.

mattloch, do they allow all of that debauchery in "in God we Trust" Bakersfield, shocking!

Tomw:  If you had a subscription to Ebony magazine you could have saved some poor, horny, cross-eye, Arabian a lot of trouble.

Can you get Ebony magazine delivered to the Ivory Coast?

TomW, you have it all wrong, all this guys who complain do so only when it shows up on the check, I used to travel two or three days a week and sometimes these were pay channels and sometimes they were free, but you could always ask and have them blocked.

Hey Anon: they didn't carefully color inside the lines.  Women of all races were drawn over.  Funny though.  As for the second Anon, I think you''ve hit on the real issue.  These guys are upset when it gets line itemed on their check.  Funny though how it's a conservative position to have big government come in and protect us from ourselves.

It was a joke Tom......  Black markers used to hide black skin.... never mind.... it loses something when translated.

Hey Anon: I got it.  Good one.  Should have put an LOL before the clairification.

Speaking of the hellish Victorian ice chest that is Ohio (if that was self-contradictory, well, so is Ohio), I almost forgot about some friends that we haven't seen in ten years.

They moved here from Dayton, Ohio, and said "Bakersfield is so liberal."

erikbako, good thing you are not a doctor, you would advocate killing the patient.
posted by anonymous on Aug 24, 2006 at 01:04 PM

We're not talking about abortion on this blog.  Talk about killing the patient on another blog

posted by anonymous on Aug 24, 2006 at 01:08 PM
Well good thing you are not his patient. But he wants  the Hotels to scratch guest , not the porn. Get it sweetheart?

I don't need protection from hotel porn, I need protection from prudes wanting to ruin everyone else's fun.
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Aug 24, 2006 at 01:15 PM
erik, if they tried to ban porn addicts from hotels, they'd lose most of their business. A lot more people watch porn than will admit it in public. Not me, I'll freely admit it.
posted by mattloch on Aug 24, 2006 at 01:16 PM
But the question then becomes: how do we identify porn addicts like Mr. Burress. Let's see, adulterers used to get a big red "A", Jewish people use to get yellow stars, so what can we do for these poor, helpless, uncontrollable porn addicts? I say we hold Burress down and tattoo a giant penis to his forehead. Same with everyone who has voted for his ordinances throughout Ohio and Kentucky. Who's with me?
posted by anonymous on Aug 24, 2006 at 01:21 PM
No, no, no, mattloch, you do it the old fashioned way, you feel them up!
posted by randomfactor on Aug 24, 2006 at 01:40 PM
The charges for the video porn are quite enough to protect me from it...
posted by gr8scott on Aug 24, 2006 at 03:44 PM
Personal choice, personal responsiblitiy.

I don't know Mr. Burress, but I know I don't need him or legislators to keep me from looking at porn in a hotel/motel. It's hard to believe that any corporation would be pressured to remove movies from their hotels/motels.

I'm about fed up with "ex" pick a vice, trying to impose their views on everyone else and I agree with randomfactor. The movies are too expensive anyway and it's only soft core.

Or so I've heard.

Quick tip:  When staying in a motel room, check (VERY CAREFULLY) between the mattress and box springs.  Some folks leave their reading material behind.  Failing that, there's always the Song of Solomon courtesy of the Gideons...
posted by TomW on Aug 24, 2006 at 05:25 PM
Yeah, I don't know that I want to be checking under the mattress.  Anything you find under a hotel mattress is not going to be something I want to touch.
posted by mattloch on Aug 25, 2006 at 08:09 AM
Looking under hotel matresses reminds me of the scene from "Four Rooms". I think I'll pass.....

Always pull back the bedspread. They don't wash them very often. The sheets are changed daily, but the bedspread....rarely. Ewwwwwwwww.
posted by NancyII on Aug 25, 2006 at 08:59 AM
Pete...I'm glad you brought that up.

How many time did you find a hotel, walk in your room exhausted, and fall on the bed for a quick rest?  Ever wonder what else fell on that bedspread before you did?  Like Pete said...Ewwwwwwwww.

Especially if it's a hotel with porn.  ;-)

Just couldn't leave it alone, could you?  I am now firmly in the ewwwwwwww camp.

I used to do collegate debate, and there was a lot of traveling involved. I've stayed in hotels and motels all over the place, and you can get a feel for the "good" ones and the "bad" ones pretty quickly. If we were in one of those that never washed bedspreads, never shampooed or steam cleaned the carpets, or would short us in glasses, towels, or other items, we would "rockstar" the room so that everything would need to be cleaned and/or replaced after we left. We would never (ok, rarely, but only by accident) break things, but the place would be in pretty bad shape when we checked out. The dirtier the place started out, the more lattitude we felt we had to really trash the place. There were plenty of times that when we left the room, the cleanest item in the room was the trash can. We felt sorry for the workers that had to clean the place up, but we would always leave a few bucks for the trouble. But we were always assured that the next person in there would have clean and fresh everything.

No, I have to be protected from those damned Bibles always placed in every room.

Please note that Citizens for Community Values is affiliated with Focus on the Family -- yep, James Dobson's organization -- yep, that's the James Dobson that Bush consults for approval of federal judicial nominations.

The sole and singular goal of the Religious Right is to shove as much religion into government as possible, and as much government into your crotch as possible -- and their every political position can be accurately predicted by this simple test: "Will it help or hinder our efforts to shove government into your crotch?"

* It really is that simple *

First: Erik, that's MR. Spock. Dr. Spock is the baby dude. I'm sure the Enterprise's science officer had a doctorate, but it's the common differentiator between the two.

Second of all... I can't even afford hotel porn. Geez, some of those "extras" are expensive. Pay-per-view at the hotel in Chula Vista was $10 a movie, porn or not. We just took some of our netflix and our DVD-capable 17in laptop and saved some coin.

When we start talking about free hotel porn, then I'll have an opinion. Until then, this guy's just an idiot who spends too much money renting hotel rooms and "accidently" buying hotel room porn. And when it comes on, all the blood rushes somewhere and he no longer can fuel the synapses to run the remote again.
