Moon base — what is needed besides Starbuck's?
NASA is planning a moon base.

The idea is to have a permanent colony for astronauts, perhaps as a way station for trips to Mars.

It would be located at the moon's south pole, hopefully by 2020, the Washington Post reported.

Four-person crews will stay for a week at a time, gradually increasing their time on the moon until power and other supplies are in place so a permanent presence is possible by 2024.

I'm guessing it would grow after that and eventually become a travel destination.

If so, what do you think a moon base must have to generate some public appeal? Besides a Starbuck's which goes without saying?

Wonder if they'll show "Apollo 13" on the inflight movie?

Steve, you want to generate public interest in a moon base (or even just a public hotel in space)? All you need to do is show a picture of what a nice bedroom would look like and let the people's mind start to wander. You'll have some of the most interesting "water cooler" discussions about bedroom activities, guaranteed. You'll be pre-sold for years ahead of time. Hell, it could even potentially pay for itself through that alone.

Not until they start showing "Airplane" and "Castaway" on regular airliners, Rob.

Agreed, Mattloch.  By the light of the full Earth, no less.  Also, the idea of building spaceships in space, which is the idea, is a great one.  Now we just need to figure out if the moon has any ore that can be mined.

Proposals like this always remind me of the Ray Bradbury story in The Martian Chronicles. The story centers on a couple that builds a hot dog stand with a prime location on Mars waiting for all the visitors from Earth to start vacationing on the red planet. One night they see their dreams of becoming rich go up in a fiery ball as nuclear war erupts on earth, extinguishing all their dreams.
