Court rules in favor of Second Amendment gun right

The Supreme Court has just ruled that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The Second Amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Read the breaking news here.

So that's why we own guns. Now I get it. In case we have to rise up as one. Are we living in Zimbabwe?

I like the idea.  As a young woman home alone at night with neighbors down the street who break into everyones house and steal stuff I feel much more comfortable knowing I can have protection.  And if you don't want to get shot... don't be breaking into other peoples homes!!!

The court got it right on this one as anyone realizes who knows the actual intent of the Founding Fathers on the issue; and it was far from being an attempt to disarm law abiding Americans in favor of politicians. Ever!

I've never owned a gun, but I know several people in SoCal who are responsible gun owners (and very good shots).

Activist judges!  States' rights!  Legislating from the bench!

Oh, they decided in a conservative way?  Never mind....  :)

Neo, for the first time ever, you spelled all of the words right in a post. Unbelievable!

Woo Hoo!!!

Damn, I sleep well at night knowing I am able to protect my family from unwanted guests breaking into my home!

FINALLY!

A right enumerated in the Constitution is NOT gutted and left to die.

The government has machine guns, F-16s, and napalm. What chance do you think you have with your handgun? What chances did David Koresh have? If the government comes after you, you need to go quietly and fight it in court. Assuming SCOTUS continues to protect habeas corpus........

Does anyone know how far this decision can be used to strike down regulations against RPGs, land mines, and other forms of "self-protection"?

It's a sad statement that a right so specifically spelled out in the Constitution has to be "ok'd" by the Supremes.  It's sadder, still, that four of our Supremes wanted to gouge it out.

Mockett...our hope is that the soldiers will be CITIZENS.

NoNamesLeft...my fear is that the gang-bangers and Columbine copy-cats are CITIZENS

Those people are getting guns outside the law.  This right is for law abiding citizens.  That's something anyone against second amendment rights ALWAYS overlooks.

talk...Get a gun to protect yourself, take lessons in it's care and usage, and then your worries will be reduced.  .

Until you shoot a family member.

Nonamesleft, I agree.  I'll see you at the next militia meeting.

I've owned at least one gun for more than 40 years.  Haven't shot a family member yet.  Had a couple of exes that....aww, nevermind.  TMI.

Those not abiding the law are going to get guns citizens or not one way or another.  This is for the rest of us who obey the laws and need to protect ourselves from the rest.

On the topic of self defense I believe it’s safe to say the only people who are afraid of or advocate against the Second Amendment are the ones who want to die.

The fact that the decision was even close may just jar more people into holding their noses and vote for McCain.

If any of the anti-gun crowd on here want to honestly learn the safety & use of a firearm let me know, I'd be more than willing to take you out to a shooting range, teach the safety aspect of shooting, how to shoot & let you shoot so you can see why so many of us like to shoot/hunt etc. There is great satisfaction in having the know-how & the ability to shoot a firearm either at targets and/or hunting. Give it an honest try & see if you like it or not, no politics involved, the only thing I demand is if you do take me up on this you must be safe & follow the rules of safe gun handling.

I had a family member who`s sister`s next door neighbor `s dad heard a friend tell his son`s girlfriend`s grandson that the dad of his neighbor who had a gun for over 40yrs and worked in the gun business for 20yrs said that he had never fired it, but he worked for the county once and had a daughter who posted on the blog because she was a world traveler and her mom had a medication problem due to her pre Alzheimer condition,

Wow, the anti gun libs here are frothing so bad they can't even put together an intelligent sentence. You anti's should put up a big sign in your front yard that says "GUN FREE HOME". That way the low lifes will now where to rob with out getting hurt.

Hmmm..Supreme court says it won't execute child rapist/molesters, but we can keep our 2nd amendment rights?? Looks like I'll be down at 2nd amendment sports this weekend...good ol' fashion tombstone justice

"should put up a big sign in your front yard that says "GUN FREE HOME". "

What about us "libs" that do own guns?

posted by NancyII on Jun 27, 2008 at 01:11 PM

Read up on the 8th amendment.  (I think that's the one.)

posted by WESLEYSMOMMY on Jun 27, 2008 at 01:14 PM

What about us "libs" that do own guns? Chica, Charlie said anti-gun libs not just silly libs...

posted by egalindo on Jun 27, 2008 at 04:10 PM

i think that was directed at me, Nancy? If it was, how is it cruel or unusual punishment to execute a pervert that gets his jollies by molesting/ raping children? In more ways than one, that person has "killed" that child's soul, childhood, happiness, etc...How cruel or unusual is that?? ***I 4 N I***

BTW, I know this is more on subject, so HOORAY!! I believe every law abiding, tax paying American (citizen or not) should have the right to own as many guns as she/he wants, as long as all rules/laws are followed

posted by NancyII on Jun 27, 2008 at 04:32 PM

egalindo.  It wasn't necessarily directed at you..it was just a comment to those who question what punishment is legal.  Somewhere it says that the punishment can't be greater than the crime.  For instance if it's not murder they can't be put to death for the crime.

Don't get me wrong, when it comes to harming a child no punishment is too great or too harsh in my mind regardless of what the constitution says.
