Pay-as-you-drive auto insurance

This is truly something I'd go for if it ever becomes available in California.

Some auto insurance providers are charging motorists based on miles driven.

"Called pay as you drive, the option is available from a few insurers in 34 states — but not California — as well as Canada, Japan and Europe."

I don't think I'd want a GPS tracker-style system installed in the car, but I'd be happy to get an odometer reading every now and then.

Obviously it benefits people who don't drive many miles, but it has a positive residual effect on the environment, traffic safety etc.

There's a bill going through the state legislature, so it may not be too long before the option is available in California.

The Los Angeles Times story on the issue is here.

If I go and park somewhere with a date, will Big Bro be, like, watching?

Not unless you want him too... but he`ll be able to find you when he needs too....

Actually, your atuo rates are loosely based on the miles driven and how you use the car.  For example, a recreational user that drives 5000 miles a year will pay less then a commuter that drives 16000 a year.  The reason for this is greater exposure to risk.

I don't see this ever happening in this state, simply because the vast number of drivers without insurance, the companies wouldn't have enough in reserves to pay claims.

Just be lucky that our state doesn't rate you based on your credit score like others do.  It's based on your driving record, as it should be.
