talkofthetown - > Talk of the Town -> Whites no longer U.S. majority in 2042
Whites no longer U.S. majority in 2042

Where's whitey?

In 36 years white people will no longer make up the majority of Americans.

New government estimates have moved the date up 8 years from their projections made in 2004.

The main contributing factor is the high birth rates among minority residents, especially Hispanics.

Story here.

Juan Lopez aka "Little Joker" will have my vote for president......

When I was a little boy and our family went somewhere on a trip, we used to count VW Beetles as a game. Now my granddaughter and I count white people.

Probably also includes things like fewer European immigrants and interracial marriages.  What do you think this is: some kind of melting pot?

posted by thefunsucker on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:48 AM

this is what happens when we allow our government to do nothing....this has already happened across Europe. We're also to blame as white America is not reproducing due to careers and selfishness. What I find disturbing is that this country will soon be just like Mexico. This is what's really perplexing....Mexicans move here to escape the misery of Mexico and then when they get here they don't assimalate but instead bring their 'heritage' with them and continue living as Mexicans!

Gee, what *WILL* the poor white people do?

Can I get the white-robe concession for Kern County if I invest now?

Jose and Carlos are panhandlers. They panhandle on different areas of town.

Carlos panhandles just as long as Jose but only collects 2 to 3 dollars
every day. Jose brings home a suitcase FULL of $10 bills, drives a Mercedes, lives in a mortgage  free house and has a lot of money to spend.

Carlos says to Jose, 'I work just as long and hard as you do but how do you
bring home a suitcase full of $10 bills every day?

Jose says, 'Look at your sign, what does it say?

Carlos sign reads, 'I have no work, a wife and 6 kids to support.

Jose says, ' No wonder you only get $2-3 dollars. Carlos says, 'So what does your sign say?

Jose shows Carlos his sign. It reads, 'I only need another $10.00 to move back to Mexico.

Funsucker, I totally get you about the whole not assimilating thing.  Seriously, look at these pictures: http://www.littleitalynyc.c...

Oh, sorry, that's Little Italy.  Hang on...how about this:

Oh no, that's German.  Wait, wait, wait.  Is this it:

Um, that's the Irish.  How about this:

I think that's Irish and German.  Well, anyway you get my point.  We shouldn't allow all these immigrants.

Jose shows Carlos his sign. It reads, 'I only need another $10.00 to move back to Mexico.

And given the average voter in Kern County, they fall for it.  Again and again and again and again.  Heck, they voted for Shrub twice and are about to give him a *THIRD* term.

posted by CatherineBaker on Aug 14, 2008 at 09:27 AM

Being afraid of change is a natural and normal part of the human condition.  OF COURSE people are nervous about the changes our country is experiencing.  As Tom pointed out, every time this country has received a large influx of immigrants it has had trouble adjusting.  Find me a country where this isn't the case.  At least we aren't having a civil war over it, which is what happens in Africa and Southeast Asia.  We are no better or worse than  our ancestors in our reaction to immigrants, and that's okay.  It's life.

posted by markohorvat on Aug 14, 2008 at 09:30 AM

What's teh big deal?  So "white people" whatever that means anyway, will no longer constitute more than 50% of the population THIRTY SIX YEARS from now!  Who cares?  They will still be the largest "ethnic" group (whatever that means)

Oh no, more dark people!  What will the sunscreen companies and tanning salons do now!

posted by gopherbro on Aug 14, 2008 at 09:35 AM

It's a matter of perspective.  If you're Navajo or Sioux anyone whose folks came to America after 1492 is a "recent immigrant".

posted by OldBlue56 on Aug 14, 2008 at 09:37 AM

The sunscreen companies and tanning salons will transition to become tortilla companies and tattoo salons.

Where's whitey?

Why is it politically incorrect to use terms like that to describe other races/ethnicities, but it's apparently okay to use this term?

posted by randomfactor on Aug 14, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Because there's no credible power to back it up with discriminatory laws or acts.

Let's see whether "whitey" disappears as a usable term (and one I never hear, anyway) after 2042.

I'm proud to be in an interracial marriage. I look forward to seeing my children, who will be the epitome of the American melting pot.

I think whites are already the minority in California.

posted by msemilyh on Aug 14, 2008 at 11:42 AM

color nine has a good point.  let's get all offended and start a big stink over the use of the "w" word

quite unprofessional for a staff blogger in my opinion.

posted by theColorNine on Aug 14, 2008 at 12:46 PM

For the record, I should add that I am not outraged or anything approaching outrage by the use of the word.  I try to let certain things wash off my back like water off a duck.  But I am irritated by the double standard, not just in this instance, but in society in general.

Some people are overly sensitive to the use of certain words, and some people are incredibly insensitive to use them.

At the same time, don't give me some lame explanation that it's okay for one race/ethnicity to use a word, but for someone of a different race/ethnicity to use the same word, it's not okay.  That's like saying it's okay for me to drink from this water fountain, but it's not okay for you (other race/ethnicty) to drink from it.

So was this posted so there would be yet another racially charged discussion. Geez. Leave me out of this one.

im truely not outraged or offended either, just surprised at what seems to be a double-standard and a little sarcasm to try and make a point.  most of the time i have way more patience than i probably should.  but someone in the (soon-to-be, maybe-already-in-california) white minority could choose to take offense and be extremely offended by it, much as someone darker might be offended by the use of "blackie" or "brownie" (which are words i rarely hear and never use).  poor choice of words for sure.

Some of your best friends are white, huh?  Cheeky Andrew!  ; )

posted by markohorvat on Aug 14, 2008 at 04:04 PM

I really don't understand this white paranoia, check the facts from the census bureau:

By 2050, whites will make up 46 percent of the population and blacks will make up 15 percent, a relatively small increase from today. Hispanics, who make up about 15 percent of the population today, will account for 30 percent in 2050, according to the new projections.

Asians, which make up about 5 percent of the population, are projected to increase to 9 percent by 2050.

46%?  Come on! There will still be more than 1 and a half times as many white people as hispanics, the next largest ethnic group.

I don't understand how this change is relevant, or important.

I don't understand the "whitey" argument.  How is it a double standard if you aren't offended by a word but someone else is?  What are you proposing, that we should all feel free to call each other racial slurs? The fact is you aren't offended because the term "whitey" has no meaning, it has no historically degrading meaning.  Look into the histroy of racial slurs and you can see why minorities are offended, these slurs carry way more meaning than just the color of a person's skin, they imply negative judgements about a person's character, personality and ethics.

TomW--the vast majority of immigrants prior to the Mexican invasion have assimalated....the Irish, the Germans, the Italians, the Japanese, Koreans and I could go on and on and on. Point is all those folks learned English and became AMERICANS. I'm glad they brought their heritage with them.....but you don't see them running around hoisting the flags of their forefathers and marching down Stockdale protesting. Have you been to the east side of town Tom....it's real nice over there isn't it??? It's a different culture and this country will be ruined due to one simple thing, a lack of unity.

posted by randomfactor on Aug 14, 2008 at 04:41 PM

Never seen a Columbus Day or St. Patrick's Day parade, have you?

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Aug 14, 2008 at 07:09 PM

Point is all those folks learned English and became AMERICANS.

The vast majority of Hispanics in this country speak English, and many more would easily want to become U.S. citizens if it wasn't so hard to earn citizenship these days.

I'm glad they brought their heritage with them.....but you don't see them running around hoisting the flags of their forefathers and marching down Stockdale protesting.

Go to Little Italy on Mulberry Street in Manhattan during the Feast of St. Joseph (or many other Italian-American Catholic festivals still celebrated in urban areas), or go to any Chinatown for Chinese New Year, or as RF mentioned.. what about St. Patrick's day and Columbus day?  What about the Scottish Highland games?  What about French-Americans who celebrate Bastille Day?

It's a different culture and this country will be ruined due to one simple thing, a lack of unity.

It's apparent you know little about our country's cultural history.

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Aug 14, 2008 at 07:18 PM

I'd also like to note that the term Mexican Invasion is completely inaccurate, considering a large portion of the United States was first settled by the Spanish.  Many of the Mexicans in California have lived on this land for centuries.

posted by CatherineBaker on Aug 14, 2008 at 07:39 PM

Uh, let's not overdo it, FSG.

Many Native Americans have also lived on this land for centuries (millenia), yet no one is talking about a Native American Invasion.

The thing people fear is change--not Mexicans, or Hispanics, or any other particular ethnic group.  When these dire reports come out telling people that global warming will cause widespread famine and change our climate zones forever, people get nervous.  When people hear that the gay lifestyle is becoming so accepted that gay marriage is legal, they get nervous.  Just 30 years ago (within the vivid memories of many people) homosexuality was taboo--never spoken about above a whisper.  That's a lot of change in just 30 years.  When people hear that the country that they know WILL be vastly different demographically from what they're used to, they get nervous.

We can debate the unfairness of it all we want, but in the end the wiser among us will accept the change, accept those among us that can't accept the change, and, uh, learn Spanish?  ; )

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Aug 14, 2008 at 07:45 PM

Catherine - I should have indicated that the Spanish were the first Europeans to settle America, not the first humans.

posted by CatherineBaker on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:10 PM

True.  There's still some debate about WHERE the Native Americans came from.  They're thinking maybe the settlers of the west coast of South America were Polynesians.  Cool huh?

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Aug 14, 2008 at 08:19 PM

Yeah.. there are a number of theories as to the ancestry of the native cultures of the Americas.. I've even heard that Asiatic peoples might have used crude boats, hugging the coastlines of Asia, up past the Aleutians and then into Alaska..

Yeah, and the mammoths were saying, "This damn Human invasion!"

Hey, you gonna be at Pizzaville on Saturday?

randomfactor/floridastategrad---you both must be kidding.....St. patricks Day, Batille day, Chinese New Year.... yeah those a real riots! Give me a break. Listen folks all of the immigrants of past, where ever they came  from, did not amount to the MEXICAN INVASION of today. Try as you like but this invasion is changing our country and not for the good. Immigration must be limited, we cannot take EVERYONE that wishes to come here. The Scottish Highland games LMFAO! another real riot, call in the SWAT team!

hey did I just see William wallace marching down Stockdale!?? By the way, I was wanting to visit the Lowrider Nationals a couple weekends ago but I showed up and the cops were shuting it down....such a peacful group...I think someone was stabbed.....kinda like those damn Frenchman celebrating Bastille Day! Sorry but I got to go and arm myself, the Catholics are marching! You folks are funny!

Go to East Bakersfield and find me the VAST majority of Hispanics that speak English.  Please tell me where they are at.  Also, there are over six million people in line to become American citizens.   It's not hard to become a citizen--- here is all you need, besides time...

Popeye - East Bakersfield is not an accurate cross-section of this country as a whole.  There are always areas which have a heavy concentration of non-English speaking peoples.. no matter what ethnic group they are from.

posted by thefunsucker on Aug 14, 2008 at 09:28 PM

I obviously am a biggot! Thank God for liberals. i was wondering when the race card was going to be played. You need to pull your head my friend. By the way I'm not going to vote for Barrack so now I a super bigot right??? Now I really got to go as I need to pay my KKK dues. Great job floridastategrad, you've made your professors proud! And remember, the next time you're in manhattan and the Feast of St. Joseph is going down, stay clear because the Italians are comin and hells followin with em!...you're funny!

Well, you did refer to LITTLE ITALY and CHINATOWN specifically,  so I used our locale.

BUT...respond to the other part of your statement.

posted by FloridaStateGrad on Aug 15, 2008 at 06:47 AM

Popeye.. I'm pretty sure you'll still hear Italian in any Little Italy, and Chinese in any China Town.

Plenty of Mexicans have assimilated perfectly into this country not only in language and culture, but in citizenship as well.

I don't deny that we have a immigration problem - I just don't like it when people use sweeping generalizations about an entire group of people as it's an unfair judgement.

Yes, go to East Bakersfield and it's predominantly Mexican.. but in the grand scheme of things, the majority of Mexican Americans in Bakersfield do speak English, considering many of them have been in this town for generations and some had no choice but to assimilate so that their children would actually receive an education.

funsucker: I'm not an Obama supporter, so you don't need to worry about me thinking you're a racist because you don't intend to vote for him. I think you're a racist because you're quick to judge an entire ethnic group based upon what to me seems like a very limited experience with them.  Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on you, especially if you've only really lived in Kern County (if you haven't, I'm curious as to where else you've lived).

posted by AudreyB on Aug 15, 2008 at 08:17 AM

The last time I looked at the data, Hispanics were considered white.  The statistic states that in 2042 only 48% will be, non Hispanic whites.   What would it be if the Hispanics were included.

The human race is morphing into one race because we have increased access to other races and cultures.  Soon we will all be a cream color with light brown wavy hair and brown eyes.

It's kind of sad that we're losing the fair skinned redheads and blue eyed blonds.  Maybe they will be bred in the future like exotic pets.

What nags me is, when we achieve a harmonious blend of skin, hair and eye color, what will be the new standard for deciding someone is inferior?   Because, bigotry never dies.

posted by TomW on Aug 15, 2008 at 08:41 AM

Seriously, don't look at the recent immigrants if you're going to draw comparisons to previous immigration waves.  Look at 3rd and fourth generation immigrants and tell me then how different one wave is from another.

I know plenty of Cubans, Mexicans and Puetro Ricans that are whiter in complexion that I am, and they all speak excellent English (most of them are 3rd and 4th gen. Americans).
