We've got a good story today on garden pests with tons of tips for getting rid of everything from gophers to aphids to whiteflies. You can read the story here. What are your tips?
There is a wire report out that says folks are once again debating whether we should give the noble penny the heave-ho.Apparently it actually costs more than a penny to make each penny these days. I love the penny as much as the next guy, but I think I could live without the little copper fella. I end up dumping them into a jar anyway and when I take them in to those coin counters at the grocery story they barely are worth the trip. What do you think? Should we scrap the penny?
The headline above the gigantic black truck on our Web page says, "This 'toy' is a ticket magnet." Frankly, I think monster trucks should not be street-legal, period.Really, who needs a truck that requires its own zip code? I can only think of one reason, and I haven't found myself with a pressing need to drive at high rates of speed over the tops of junked vehicles on a dirt track before thousands of screaming fans.Big trucks tear up our already pothole-dotted highways. Their...
What is up with all the inmates escaping from Lerdo Jail lately? Three prisoners have gotten out of the detention facility in the past week — all of them in the wee hours of the morning. This morning Brian Smith, 32, got past the perimeter fence between 1:10 and 1:40 a.m. Last Wednesday Cory Garrett, 18, and Eddie Bustamante, 30, got out sometime between 3:45 and 5:30 a.m. All of which brings to mind a number of questions: • How the heck are they getting out of their cells at...
Everybody loves street fireworks. Right? Uh, that's not what we're hearing from a few readers out there. Some people just can't stand the noise, the fuss, the inherent danger. What about you? What do you hate about front-yard fireworks? What do you enjoy about them?-Robert Price
The Bakersfield city council is talking about changing the city logo from the "squiggle" to a more straightforward logo, with a leaf and the slogan "Life as it should be."Personally I kinda like the squiggle. Maybe I was the only one, but I always got the whole mountains, valley, sun thing. And the "Life as it should be" logo has just generated too much snickering for my taste. What do you all think?
In The Californian's June 11 Eye Street section, a comment by abortion-rights supporter and former clergyman Frank Baker struck me. "If we were to leave the religious aspect out and think about abortion in a rational manner, we could come to a compromise where both sides would feel a victory and be done with the fighting," Baker said. Mr. Baker, I beg to differ. While I agree that religion should be left out of the abortion debate, I don't believe a compromise is possible. That's...
The National Weather Service says it my reach 109 degrees this weekend. If that's the case, it will be the first time we've hit that temp since July 2002 in Bakersfield. At least according to a quick search of the NWS archives.I'm going to be heading out of town the weekend, in part to avoid the crazy heat. What about you Bakersfield? What will you do if it hits 109 degrees?-Davin McHenry
Bob Price has a column today on a woman who keeps getting mail meant for other people. And it has her wondering if her mail is going missing. I know I get other people's mail at least once a month. But I never really have felt like I missed a vital piece of mail. How about you folks? Ever had a piece of mail that you were really anticipating never show up?I wish some of the hundreds of credit card applications I get each year would go to someone else.-Davin McHenry
