As things get more expensive, the time length of loans has become longer.
The former 30-year mortgage has given way to 40- and 50-year plans.
Some people think that's bad. I'm guessing most people don't.
It's all about what you can afford in a month and if a longer loan makes buying a house more monthly affordable, what's the big deal?
True, if you actually paid on it for 50 years, you would be paying much more in interest. But in the mean time, that's simply a tax deduction.

On Sunday night, a group of protesters interrupted an "In God We Trust" rally at the Rabobank Arena.
As people were singing the national anthem and proclaiming the importance in this country to the 50-year-old motto, "In God We Trust," a group went in front of the podium and unfurled a green banner that read, "No to women-hating, anti-gay Christian facist theocracy."
That would be a reference that Christian fundamentalists are running the country.
Well,...
Exxon Mobil announced near-record profits for the three months ending June 30 — $10.36 billion.
Other oil companies are also reporting multi-billion-dollar profits in those three months — the ones where gas prices have exceeded $3 a gallon.
Now, oil folks will tell you the eonomics of their business are just too complicated for us little people to understand.
But that's not true.
Here's how profits work.
It's a price that exceeds the cost.
You make...
It is too bad I am so healthy. Otherwise I would be on the front line of a problem Associated Press Lauran Neergaard is writing about.Namely:
Medication mistakes injure well over 1.5 million Americans every year, a toll too often unrecognized and unfought, says a sobering call to action.
At least a quarter of the errors are preventable, the Institute of Medicine said Thursday in urging major steps by the government, health providers and patients alike.
Topping the list:...
Kern County, continuing its reputation as a hot bed of ignorance, is number two and three in the state for its rates of the sexually transmitted diseases of chlamydia and gonorrhea.Thoughout the nation, California is tops in those categories, according to a story written in the July 18 edition by Californian reporter Emily Hagedorn.Furthermore, many young people either don't know how they can get a sexually transmitted disease or they mistakenly believe there is a ready cure if they do...
It appears that instead of decreasing accidents at busy Bakersfield intersections, red-light cameras have actually increased the crunch toll. But according to a story by Californian reporter David Burger in the July 18 edition, serious accidents at those places have delined while fender benders have increased. And the typical scenario for the fender bender is a rear-end collision caused by the person in front braking hard to avoid a Kodak moment. The system has generated an extra $1.6 million in...
The Kern County Board of Supervisors just authorized a measure on the November ballot asking voters if they will approve a half-cent sales tax to improve local roads.God knows our roads need to be improved. And I personally would like to pay a half-cent extra tax every time I buy new golf balls to help pay for the improvements. But what I'd also like is to vote on getting rid of a half-cent sales tax for other things. We never seem to get the chance to take away. Only to add.Hardly seems fair....
Looks like Congress is moving closer to banning online gambling. To be honest I just don't understand this. I guess the argument is that gambling ruins peoples lives and leaves them broke.Well so does alcohol. But we're not banning that. Of how about love? Man, if you don't roll the dice right on that one you can end up broke and heartbroken. Maybe we need a bill on that too.The only thing that keeps me from being outraged by this is that I know they won't ban online gambling in the end....
Perhaps the way we talk in the workplace affects our corporate ladder abilities.Indianapolis Star columnist Dana Knight brings this topic up in a report on how you talk to your boss. She writes:
"Language can be a way to solidify shared influences," says Latrica Schooley, an account executive at Combined Worksite Solutions in Indianapolis, who believes language can be a way to bond with people who may not be your age or level in the company.
But words also can be a divider....
Associated Press reported Darlene Superville wrote a story about simple spelling. The idea is to spell words they way they sound so it is easier to learn English and combat illiteracy. That way it would be less confusing when "say," "they" and "weigh" all rhyme, but "bomb," "comb" and "tomb" don't."It's a very difficult thing to get something accepted like this," acknowledges Alan Mole, president of the Amkerican Literacy...
Californian reporter Danielle Belton has written a story for the July 6 paper on which vehicles are clean for the air and which are not.A comprehensive list was compiled by Environmental Working Group which can be found online at www.cleancarsforkidsIt has cars from 1985 to 2006 and you can check their pollution index as it relates to Bakersfield.Turns out my new car, a 2006 Saturn Ion, which I bought for fuel efficiency, spews out 13 times more pollution than the cleanest small cars on...
It was bound to happen. A couple months ago we had an article about people swimming in the lakes at the Park at River Walk, even though that wasn't what the lakes were necessarily meant for.Now a young girl has been pulled from the lake after apparently spending 30 minutes underwater. Very sad. Some folks I know are outraged that the city would build lakes like these that tempt people to swim, and then not provide any safeguards. (Ever been to Yokuts or Beach park?)Personally I think it is...
