I've been a reporter for 36 years, but trends in the last 15 years or so — accelerated in the last few years — show that people are leaving newspapers in droves. Some major newspapers in the U.S. are up for sale, including the Los Angeles Times,  and there hasn't been a huge rush to buy them. Paid circulation is declining as readers — probably like you because you're here — gravitate to the Internet. As a result, newspapers like The Californian are...

NBC and CW networks have refused to run ads promoting the Dixie Chicks movie, Shut up &Sing. The movie is about the Dixie Chicks' controversial statement against the U.S. president and the invasion of Iraq, according to the company that is distributing the film. You can view the ad here. Alan Wurtzel, head of standards and practices at NBC. "There are times when some advertisers get more publicity for getting their ad rejected," according to wire reports. Wurtzel...

Does it make a difference to where you shop that  Wal-mart donates 78 percent of its campaign contributions to Republicans while Costco sent 99 percent of its political money to Democrats? Increasing, shoppers are making those distinctions in where they decide to roll their shopping cart, a story by Douglas Brown of The Denver Post says. It says identity shopping is moving to the mainstream. In Colorado, residents can go to buybluecolorado.org to find out  how various...

I had a visceral reaction when I saw a clip of Rush Limbaugh criticizing Michael J. Fox for exaggerating his Parkinson disease movements in Fox's stem cell research ad. It was, "Rush you're a jerk." Rush alleged Fox stopped taking medication so his body movements would look worse in the ad. What offended me was someone making fun of another's infirmity. People do that all the time with comments like you're fat, stupid, frail, sick, uncoordinated or whatever. Yes, if...

Well, apparently for the last 15 years or so, county animal control officers have been burying dead dogs and cats on vacant property. The practice — some 500-plus burials in the last year — ended last week after county lawyers involved animal control officers that such burials need the permission from a property owner. That is almost always not practical, so the dead animals — complete with bugs and stink — will be brought to the animal shelter for disposal....

St. Francis school, a private campus, has required students to use rolling backpacks for several years now. The change came after the principal tried to lift a student's backpack one day and was shocked to feel how heavy it was. for the sake of the kids' backs, she made the change. What do you think? Should a school be making that kind of decision for parents? This is a private school, so you figured parents could take their children elsewhere. Should we require the same for public...

The Kern County District Attorney's staff published its first critique of The Californian by complaining the newspaper mischaracterized a prosecutor's action in a murder case. The posting written by Deputy District Attorney John S. Somers criticizes the newspaper for reporting that a prosecutor hid or withheld evidence in the second retrial of murder suspect Glenn Maurice Johnson. Somers complained the prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Arthur Norris (who Somers did not name in his...

Republicans, those great believers in America, don't want the wrong people voting in elections. The Orange County Republican Committee have accused the campaign of GOP Congressional candidate Tan D. Nguyen of sending a letter to 14,000 Hispanics warning them that if they are in the country illegally or they are an immigrant that voting in a federal election can put them in jail. The problem with the letter, which was written in Spanish,  is immigrants who are naturalized citizens...

Apparently eating fish is good for you. Dang, how come the same can't be said of Klondike bars? But new studies say eating seafood twice a week is good for your heart and generally outweighs the risk of exposure to mercury and other dangerous contaminants. I both catch fish and eat fish. Not so much that I'm healthy. But enough so that I can proclaim an occasional healthy diet. My favorites are the trout I catch and salmon that I buy in the store. I will eat lobster, but...

It's in vogue to brag how your kid is more computer literate than you are. I do it all the time. But it's dangerous to be what one former congressional page described his mom to be in an instant message session with former U.S. Rep Mark Foley —namely, "computer dumb." A story by Suzanne Perez Tobias of the Witchita Eagle recounts  how the teen told Foley his mother wasn't smart enough to realize the teen was chatting with Foley in a sexually explicit session....

A small plane, registered to a New York Yankees pitcher, crashed into a high-rise New York City apartment building Wednesday, killing two people. It's too early to tell what this is all about, but it does not appear to be an act of terrorism, officials said. The crash was eerily similar to the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy because the first reports of that were that a small plane crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. We live 3,000 miles away, but my first thought was this is...

The Monday night death of a 12-year-old King City girl on Highway 46 marks the 11th fatal accident since 2003 on the road between the Kern County line and Interstate 5. Berniece Soto, who was sleeping in the back of her father's Chevrolet Suburban, was ejected when the vehicle was struck head-on by a Hyundai Accent that was illegally passing a big rig on a solid yellow line. The Hyundai was driven by 41-year-old Magdalena Puente of Bakersfield who was reported in critical condition at...

So the court released the list of questions that potential jurors in the trial of Vincent Brothers will have to answer. Read all about it here. Don't know who Brothers is? He is a former educator who is accused of killing his three children, ex-wife and former mother-in-law. You can check out our past stories on the case here. Warning: Some of the links may not work. Anyway, I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who would want to serve on this jury. You gotta plan on giving up your...

Marylee Shrider has got a column about a former bank robber who is in town looking for volunteers for her charity program, which provides presents to the children of inmates. Apparently Mary Kay Beard served six years in prison for bank robbery and now runs Angel Tree. Read all about her here. Anyway, I'm wondering what you all think of this program? Should we be giving donations to help the children of criminals? The kids themselves certainly didn't do anything, but it does seem strange...
