Six days to go until Christmas and I admit, I've only purchased two gifts and some stocking stuffers. I'm exactly the consumer that retailers are frustrated with right now -- I didn't fall for their big early sales, I have the smallest budget for gifts in years, and I'm waiting until the last minute to finish my shopping.
Read an AP story about how this may affect retailers.
Luckily, some stores will make a final push for my business in the next few days, according to the story:...
Rumor has it that Tiger played a round at Seven Oaks on Monday. It's only rumor because no one seems to know for sure. The course is closed Mondays so not too many people could have claimed a Tiger sighting.
Maybe we'll find out when they update the course record out there!
Monday, the governor of New Jersey is expected to sign a bill banning the death penalty. According to The New York Times, "once he signs the bill, New Jersey will become the first state in the modern era of capital punishment to repeal the death penalty."
In California, in 1972, the state supreme court declared the death penalty "cruel and unusual punishment." But in 1977, the state Legislature re-enacted the death penalty as a form of punishment long as the murder met...
Is it just me or has Bakersfield seen more than its fair share of home invasions, shootings, bank robberies, murder-for-hires and teachers gone wild (and wilder) these past few weeks?
What's going on in this city known for its friendly people and what can be done to rid Bakersfield of such nefarious characters committing such outrageous crimes?
Never mind baseball, it's Bakersfield which really needs to take a long, hard look at itself.

The long-awaited Mitchell report is out today and already some high-profile Major League Baseball players have been named in the report as steroid users.
Pitchers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte were the first two names leaked to the media, but expectations are that the report will name 60 to 80 players who have indulged in performance-enhancing substances.
Is anyone really surprised that professional baseball has been exposed for the dirty sham that it is?

With megachurches come mega crowds, mega money, and increasingly, mega security concerns.
The crowds—anywhere from 2,000 to 20,000 worshippers each weekend—can be an attractive target for a deranged shooter. Overflowing offering plates are tempting to thieves, and well-known preachers can become high-profile targets.
Sunday's shootings at New Life Church in Colorado...
Downtown Bakersfield will be filled with the sights and sounds of “Christmas Around the World” at 6 tonight at the annual Christmas Parade — which will include 38 floats, musicians, classic cars and equestrians.
Are you going to the Bakersfield Christmas Parade downtown tonight?
Or are parades a thing of the past?
Share your special Christmas parade memories or your favorite part of the annual event.
Today we're talking religion and politics because tomorrow that's what GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is going to be talking about.
Specifically Romney will discuss questions about his faith — Mormonism. It's an issue that has dogged his campaign, what with all the cult-talk and national polls showing Americans being uneasy with electing a Mormon as president.

But the point of this blog post is to ask whether the religious convictions of...
Is it a good idea to perpetuate the reality of Santa Claus?
When children are young, it's certainly a technique to get them to behave around the holiday season.
I don't believe I ever told my children Santa Claus was as real as the Easter Bunny..
In fact, my favorite thing to do with them was to say as we were driving home from church on Easter, "I just saw the Easter Bunny hopping around the corner in my rear view mirror."
Thus by the time they look, that darn bunny was...
I believe one of the smartest things I've ever done in my life is not to take high school chemistry.
A decision made after I barely scraped a B in high school biology, the hardest class I ever had in high school or college.
The lack of chemistry, though, is why I've never been arrested for trying to make methamphetamine.
Up until this weekend, chemistry teacher Jeff Scheidemantel, 32, at Shafter High School could have said the same thing.
But he had a bunch of ingredients,...
