A new report shows that one out of every 100 adult is in jail or prison, according to this story by AP writer David Crary. http://www.newsweek.com/id/... That is a lot of people. With all of our prisons and our anecdotally high conviction and incarceration in Kern County, we can't help but wonder how much KC contributes to this number? And, if we added it up, would Kern County's jail/prison rate be higher or lower than the national average? I'm sure you bloggers are betting on...

While scrolling our news wires this morning I came across a story about the tricky predicament of dating a good friend's ex. Anyone who attended high school or grew up watching Beverly Hills 90210 knows how common such alliances can be. But does that make them a good idea? It's always struck me as a bit lazy. — Andrew Mockett

I saw Saturn through a telescope for the first time in my life Wednesday night. The experience was jaw-dropping awesome. I'm sure seeing this beautiful sight added at least a year to my lifespan. I have to thank the Kern Astronomical Society for the privilege of letting me look through two members' telescopes that were set up at the Panorama Bluffs for viewing the lunar eclipse, which I also enjoyed with and without magnification. But even though it was great to see some of the...

Most of us remember those fun evenings playing a classic board game like Monopoly with friends or family that stretched long into the night. But as schedules become busier and (dare I say it) attention spans become shorter, the likelihood of sitting around the dinner table for 5 hours to find out the murderer and murder weapon in Clue is getting more remote. Now there are speeded-up versions of classic board games with the slogan “take a 20-minute game break." Read the Kansas...

A new campaign called Proper Atttire is designed to change the way women think about condoms. Read the story here. The slogan is naughty, but quite charming: "No entry without proper attire." The campaign is trying to get women to take their sexual safety into their own hands, and I assume, stop relying on their man to worry about protection. This brings up an interesting point. Whose responsibility is it to bring the condom to the party? Bonus points for the best alternative...

We asked this question in our daily poll on Monday. So far, Ronald Reagan is top of the list by quite a wide margin. Only problem with the poll is that you can't explain your choice. But you can now. Go for it. Do it for the Gipper!

People with blue eyes, all 300 million of them, may all be related. Researchers in Denmark, one of the blue-eyed capitols of the world, have found that every person with blue eyes descends from just one "founder," an ancestor whose genes mutated 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. Before then, everyone had brown eyes. So my wife and I have blue eyes. Is that a problem? The research shows that there was a mutation from some brown-eyed parents, and that mutation is pretty consistent, DNA...

What haven't we said about marijuana here? I so hesitate to bring this up, but a new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, says that heavy marijuana users have as much as three times the risk of developing serious gum disease compared to those who haven't smoked pot. I don't know what this means. Maybe pot smokers should visit their dentist more often. Serious gum disease can show up by the time people reach their 30s, the study says. I only point this out in the...

Laws restricting where sex offenders can live have resulted in a fair number of them living under a bridge in Miami. A Reuters story says, "Alejandro Ruiz and his neighbors served their time for sex crimes but found themselves sleeping under a Miami highway bridge because laws meant to keep them away from children leave them nowhere else to live. Their dismal tent camp, tucked under an overpass on a causeway linking Miami and Miami Beach, reeks of human waste and garbage. But it is the...

On Thursday, China will begin to celebrate the Year of the Rat, one of 12 different  animals in the Chinese Zodiac cycle. In recognition of that, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) would like everyone to treat rats better. PETA suggested treating the rodents with kindness and respect instead of trapping, poisoning and killing them.  Also they shouldn't be used for medical experiments, the group said. "Rats are intelligent, sensitive and friendly animals who...

This will make some people happy. Police in Virginia Beach, Va. seized two display photos of scantily clad men and a woman from an Abercrombie & Fitch store, citing the manager on a misdemeanor obscenity charge. The managers disregarded warnings before the confiscation. Some customers had complained. One photograph showed three shirtless young men, with one man's upper buttocks showing. The other image was of a woman whose breast was mostly exposed, authorities said. A&F said the...

What kind of person does it take to be part of an organization which uses mentally retarded women as "suicide" bombers. That's what happened in Baghdad today when two women walked into crowded areas and had bombs strapped to themselves that were remotely activated, killing 73 people. Al Qaeda was responsible, bringing a new low to its series of reprehensible acts. I put "suicide" in quotes because they were really murdered bombers. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice...
