thegrumpyskeptic - > THE GRUMPY SKEPTIC -> A Good Day to Live
A Good Day to Live

A good day to live

I will take a break from my usual rants and all the heavy issues that we face in our state, nation, and species, and talk about something that has touched my life. As many of you know, my son was in a near drowning. Can you believe it, in my line of work I have come across similar events, involving other people. I guess I just want to talk about that experience.

There is nothing like someone asking you if a loved one is going to be ok. A little life is in your hands all you can tell a very worried person is “I don‘t know, we are doing are best” It is tough, especially when you want to say something like “yes” to help them feel better. Aside from that; if you have ever seen on television, doctors and nurses, and hospital staff running back and forth, all in a effort to save life of a fellow human being, and been in a Emergency Room where a situation is critical, you will know that things like that actually happen, when I see things like that I think to my self “what a valiant, and hopeful little life forms we are!”. How in those moments there is no bigotry, no religion, no pre-conceived notions, the only focus is helping someone else.

As an agnostic/atheist, I am often asked that since there is no higher power, or meaning of life, what is the point? Our lives are short and insignificant, against the backdrop of the cosmos, and the depressing knowledge that time, will continue to run, long after we are dead. To this I say that the very point of life is to make the world a little bit better, to love our fellow human, just a little more. Religion gets in the way of that, it stops us from trying to see the world from someone else eyes. Religion is set, and rigid, does not allow us to change our minds about issues. Lying is wrong, have there been instances where lying was the right thing to do?

Life is precious, because we have a limited amount of it. I want to use mine to love my family, treat my fellow man well, and leave the world a little bit better. Sorry if it turned into a rant, but not my usual grumpy self. Have a great evening

Very very true our lives are short and insignificant.. If you want to take a scientific approach to this point a political religious view and where the souls goes then i guess ill look at it this way.. Since most religions talk about lakes of fires and magma i guess that can be a scientific/evolutionist point of view... Our souls go underground and burn in the magma and so the circle of life goes on heheheh...

Damn im stoned... lol

Good post Grumpy.  I often lament that those of the atheist faith only post negatives about other faiths and never anything positive about their own.  You have done the opposite.  I totally disagree with you and our perspectives on the universe are very different.  But that is OK, we can disagree and not hate;)

I was unaware of your son's accident, but I hope all is well with him as well as with the rest of your family.

You are right about religion. As a Christian I have seen religion get in the way of far too many peoples faith. That may sound odd, but it is true. When people become mired in the "rules and regulations" of a given religion, they tend to lose sight of their spirituality, which is what faith is really about. My faith does not reside in a building or with a human being leading a congregation and I hold no animosity toward agnostics or athiests, as I am just as flawed and confused as any of them, just in different circumstances, and for different reasons. I like the old saying that "It's OK if you don't believe in God, He still believes in you". I stopped telling people I know to be  non-believers, for whatever reason, that I would pray for them and their families, but I do it anyway. I figure it can't hurt!

Seriously grumpy, we've argued on here, but I honestly wish you and your family well. The thought of anything bad happening to anyones kids, not just mine, makes me feel yukkie inside. Keep us posted.

grumpy:  I used to say that the meaning of life was to keep searching for the meaning of life.  Keep on searching earnestly.  And I, too, hope all's well with your son.

The meaning of life is to struggle always against entropy until it defeats you, and help others in their fight.

Thanks for sharing, Grumpy.  I've seenn the doctors and nurses save lives up-close too.  The ultimate negative entropy providers.  Hope all's well with the young one.
