I'm Terribly Distressed About Paris Hilton (Drew)
I can’t believe that people care, at all, about Paris Hilton going to jail when our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters are dying in the Middle East.  Recently I was browsing a book of the New York Times cover pages for the last 100 years, and I read headlines such as “Dr. King Slain,” “End of War In Europe!” “Man Walks On Moon.” Seriously, man walks on the moon. Once more, man walks on the moon. For thousands of years human beings have been looking into the sky and saying “I want that. I want to be there and I want to touch that.” And Americans did.  It was a momentous event in American and human history.
And now we have Paris Hilton.
I wonder if the days of 40-point headlines are done. I’m wondering if the front page of the times will announce “War Over in Iraq!” Or if attention will peter out, the stream of our nations news sucked dry by tributaries and dams proclaiming, “Paris in Jail,” and “The winner of American Idol is (insert generic singer here)!” while our sisters, brothers, sons and daughters die in Iraq.

Oh, by the way, my name is Drew and I’m a new intern. I grew up in Michigan and attend the university of Michigan. I’ve been thinking not only about my personal experience at the newspaper, but newspapers in general since I have gotten here. I guess it affects us all.

HI Drew...you write very well, and I agree with every word. If I NEVER see Paris' overdone, underfed face again, it will be too soon! (I am, however, very glad they sent the spoiled little brat back to jail. I am so tired of celebrities getting preferential treatment by the court system.) Likewise with American Idol...never watch it, never will. There are so many more important things than "Britney Shaves Head" and the like.

Paris is the epitome of "post modern skank". She isnt even a star of any real sort, she is simply a white trash dipstick who just happens to have the financial clout of the Hilton empire backing her up. I couldn't believe my eyes this morning when I opened the paper and saw that scumbags plight on the front page when on the fifth or sixth page was the story of the current ICBM missle debate between us and Russia. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The Paris stroy should be in the "Eye Street" section, not on the front page.

The difference is that the average American has never heard of most of the men and women who have been killed in the Middle East, but virtually everyone has heard of Paris Hilton.

I care very dearly about our men and women fighting in Iraq and other places around the globe.  I also care about equal justice, which is a principal of our country.  The only reason I care about today's events surrounding the rich white trash is because I want that philosophy of equal justice to apply.  I know I'm just kidding myself, but at least for one day, money didn't save her butt from going to jail like regular people who break the law.  And you guys are right, it should be in the Eye Street entertainment section.

I admit it, I read every word of the front page story about Paris today, and surveyed the Web and TV coverage as well. I think it's funny that she threw a temper-tantrum. I wish I could go to jail for a month and have some peace and quiet! But Paris can't live without being in the starlight.

In the big scheme of things, Paris is a non newsworthy subject.....until now. Now she is newsworthy for two reasons. One is, do celebrities get special treatment....but more importantly, she has little girls all over the nation trying to emulate her. That's why she should get the book thrown at her. Let them see her cry like a little baby in an orange jumpsuit because "it's not fair that jail is hard". Try living in a prison and having AIDS. Now that's real stress.

As much money as she has, if she gets pulled over for a DUI again, they ought to give her a year. Most drunks can't afford a limo driver, she can. All the more reason to throw her ars in the can. Now that's HOT.

philosophy of equal justice to apply.

Robert Shapiro said that standard procedure in a case like this is for the person to do only ten percent of their sentence due to jail overcrowding. Paris has done that. She's being singled out because of who she is.

If you've seen what Judge Michael Sauer looks like, you might better understand why he dislikes someone like Paris so much. He's a buck-toothed geek who probably had to take his sister to the prom with him, the type of guy that all of the pretty girls in high school would giggle at. So now he gets his revenge. He's been a judge for twenty-five years, but he's still hearing traffic arraignments! That should tell you something.

If he has grandkids, he'd better hide them. Quickly.

Great post from the Visalia Lovers lane bandit. I can see why he is so upset  at the judge, as he too had to take Sis the rocket scientist to the High School prom  and probably had to pay extra if she took her veil off.
Off course the Lovers Land Lothario feel for Paris, as he too considers himself one of the beautiful people, the trailer model.
Geez his admiration for Paris stems from his hate for baby factory women, and admire Paris because Paris just does it for fun. His type of gal!

You know, I don't think this little time in the slammer should be such a big deal to her.   It's not like she is there FOREVER, or has to be mixed with the general population, or really have to deal with 'prison life'.  She is getting her 'special treatment', and she should be THANKFUL!!  Imagine what it would be if she had killed someone or a lot of someone's or a child while she was drunk.  I know it's hard to look at the bright side of it, but there it is, and she should be THANKFUL her stupid butt isn't in there for manslaughter.  I don't care what the judge looks like or anything along that line.  She sowed what she reaped.  It's all about Karma.  And hers sucks!!

I'm not sure how I will last the next 40 days knowing poor little Paris sitting alone in her cell.  However, I 'm sure working 50+ hours a week, taking care of my family, enjoying my friends, and living a normal and responsible life will be enough to survive.  Come to think of it, if Paris had tried being more mature and responsible she wouldn't be in this mess.

Her daddy's money will keep her jail life from being too miserable. When we read stories like this we are made to realize how out of touch these Hollywood types are with reality. In many ways that's not her fault. She was brought up to be a typical spoiled rich brat and we can't be too surprised when she acts like it.

Those are my ramblings about this over-blown story.  With any luck we won't hear anything else about it for another 5 1/2 weeks!

" I lock the doors in case I’m attacked" shouldn't that be "I lock the doors to be sure I am attacked"?

So that make Liz Taylor what?  Her step aunt or her great step aunt?  Or her former stepgrandmother?

Too many "steps' for me.  Easier to say, "related by marriage"...

OK..for any inquiring minds who want to know.  (I'm with Roy..tired of celebrities, politics, and religion so here's a bit of fluff for no other reason than that I got nosy and I'm off today with little to do that interests me at this time.)

Nicky Hilton is little Paris's grandfather making LIz Taylor Paris's pre step grandmother.   Whew..these family trees are difficult to follow sometimes.
