Last week my brother was in a home improvement store with his 5 year old daughter.  He was there picking up some electrical products for a new piece of equipment.  At one point when he was looking at something his daughter started to wander off.  My brother being a good parent tells his daughter to stay close and not wander because a stranger could take her or harm her.  After he said this another customer that was right there looked up at my brother a mumbled f**king a**hole to my brother.  I am really proud of my brother because he just walked away with his daughter and continued to do his shopping.  At one point he had to walk past this man to get another item when he did this the man mumbled something else.  When my brother heard him again he politely informed the man that he was just trying to teach his 5 year old daughter that not all people are good and she needs to be very careful and to stay near him wile out in public.  After he said this the man in the store went into a tirade yelling and cussing at my brother (in front of his daughter) for telling his daughter that there are bad people in this world.  The man finally had to be escorted out of the store by 2 employees.  My initial thought is that this man is a child molester and was pi*sed off that my brother was properly informing his daughter.  Am I looking at this the wrong way?  I am having a hard time understanding why someone would react this way...please help.

Florida's public school science standards for the first time will use the word "evolution," although the biological concept already was being taught under code words such as "change over time."

The new standards, part of a set of overall science changes adopted by the State Board of Education Tuesday on a 4-3 vote, require schools to spend more class time on evolution and teach it in more detail.

The standards state that evolution is "the fundamental concept underlying all of biology and is supported by multiple forms of scientific evidence." That statement rankled opponents, some of whom had urged the board to add an academic freedom provision that would have allowed teachers to "engage students in a critical analysis of that evidence."

Evolution supporters, including mainstream scientists and clergy, told the board the academic freedom proposal was a wedge designed to open the door for injecting religious arguments into science studies.

"We know what's going on here," said board member Roberto "Bobby" Martinez, a Miami lawyer. "What we have here is an effort by people to water down our standards."

Opponents of evolution denied they had a religious motive, arguing that there are flaws in the scientific theory of evolution and that students should be allowed to explore them.

As a compromise, the standards refer to evolution as a scientific theory, explaining that a theory is a well-supported and accepted explanation of nature, not simply a claim.

The vote was the latest in a long line of public debates over evolution dating back to the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925, when a teacher was convicted of violating Tennessee's evolution ban. That verdict was reversed on technicality, but courts later ruled evolution could be taught.

Courts subsequently barred teaching the biblical account of creation along with evolution. Most recently, a federal judge in Pennsylvania ruled that intelligent design, which holds the universe's order and complexity is so great science alone cannot explain it, also was a religious theory and could not be taught in public schools.

John Sullivan, executive director of the Florida Baptist Convention, objected to calling evolution the only fundamental concept underlying biology. He wrote in an e-mail to Education Commissioner Eric Smith that Baptists firmly believe there's evidence of a "Creator-initiated origin of life" but did not object to teaching evolution. He argued, though, its scientific weaknesses should be taught as well as its strengths.

Any Thoughts?

When will religious people get it in their head that what others believe has nothing to do with them?  NOBODY knows for sure what is on the other side of death, but most if religions want to continue to force their beliefs on others that believe different.  History has shown us that if the religious masses don't get their way they are more than willing to use any means including mass murder and war to force their beliefs on others.  I think that in due time it will be the religious war mongers that will ultimately cause the downfall of mankind.

After reading the linked article how many people believe they would have never been arrested after the police came out to your house 18 times due to a domestic disturbance call?

I'm sorry but if any normal citizen had anywhere close to a quarter of the calls against them they would have been taken away in handcuffs.  This police force deserves to get all the bad publicity they get.  The officer involved has been accused of beating his 2nd wife before she was able to get away from him, is being investigated for killing his 3rd wife, and now is the prime suspect in the disappearance of his 4th wife.  Is it just me or does anyone else see a pattern here?

Radiohead tells fans to pay what they want for album

By Kate Holton Mon Oct 1, 12:24 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Radiohead, one of the world's most influential rock bands, plans to sell its new album from its Web site as a digital download and let fans choose what they want to pay.

With music sales in decline globally for seven successive years, the industry is engaged in a debate over how best to reverse the trend.

Radiohead said its seventh studio album "In Rainbows" would be available from Radiohead.com from October 10 in MP3 format, meaning it can be played on all digital devices. In the latest twist in the move to digital music, fans can choose how much to pay, or can pay nothing if they prefer.

Do you think this is smart for such a large band?

Are you more inclined to purchase their album now?

What would you pay?

Would you pay anything?

I had an idea like this one about 5 years ago, but it was on the side of a record company doing the same thing but with minimums (no free albums).  I feel that record companies have been greedy and have focused their attention and resources on trying to stop the unstoppable force that is downloads.  I support Radiohead and any band who takes a stand for themselves.  Radiohead continues to show their intelligence and forward thinking by taking this path.  The band is going to make a lot more money by putting out their album this way instead of the traditional path.  Record executives are about to price themselves out of a industry...If they want to save what they call a job they and their companies need to wake up and encourage downloads.

Gunman died in hail of bullets

11 lawmen on leave amid investigation

| Friday, Aug 31 2007 8:10 AM

Last Updated: Friday, Aug 31 2007 8:10 AM

Lawmen fired about 100 shots at an armed Arvin man early Monday morning in an east Bakersfield neighborhood, according to officials.

An officer-involved shooting happened early Monday behind this house in the 2600 block of Lake Street in east Bakersfield.

Thirty-four bullets killed 24-year-old German Sarabia, in the backyard of a home located in the 2600 block of Lake Street, according to a coroner’s release.

Eleven lawmen, some Bakersfield police officers and some Kern County sheriff’s deputies, fired the shots after Sarabia refused to drop a pistol.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said the investigation wasn’t finished. He couldn’t comment on whether the number of shots was necessary.

This whole story puts shivers down my back.  First, 100 shots divided by 11 officers equals 9 shots per officer.  Was the suspect on PCP and wouldn't go down? Probably not!  This sounds like good old fashion Kern County Cowboy stuff,  shoot off as many shots as possible and then ask questions.  These cowboys hit their human target with  34% of their shots, WOW GOOD SHOOTIN BOYS.  Where did the other 66 bullets go?  How long did the officers negotiate with the suspect?  Was the gun the suspect had even drawn?  Did the suspect ever fire or point the gun at the officers?

I have friends in the police department and know most do a good job, however actions like these are despicable.  11 officers who feel the need to empty their entire clip on 1 suspect need to find other jobs.

In my opinion we have way to many trigger happy officers on our local police forces.  It is time to clean house and bring in people that want to "PROTECT AND SERVE" rather than SHOOT AND MURDER!

Two arrested, $400,000 in marijuana seized

| Friday, Jul 27 2007 1:28 PM

Last Updated: Friday, Jul 27 2007 1:28 PM

Bakersfield Police Thursday arrested two people in connection with a marijuana growing operation running in a garage at 302 Highland Drive, according to the department.

Detectives seized 230 marijuana plants and more than two pounds of dried marijuana in a garage indoor grow operation Thursday. This is an outdoor portion of the grow at a Highland Drive residence.

Stephanie Jones, 25, and Charles Schaeffer, 39, both of Bakersfield, were arrested. Jones was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and cultivation of marijuana. Schaeffer was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, cultivation of marijuana and theft of utility services.

Police seized 230 marijuana plants, more than two pounds of dried marijuana and the equipment used by the grow operation. The street value of the marijuana was estimated at $400,000.

Lets add this up:

230 plants comes out to about 2 ounces per plant: 230(2)=460 ounces

2 pounds: 16(2)=32 ounces

460+32=492 ounces total

28 grams per ounce: 492(28)= 13,776 grams

$20 per gram: 13,776(20)= $275,520

So lets see $400,000-$275,520=$124,480 over the most one can get for 492 ounces of even the best Marijuana.

The growers can't even bring in this kind of money for their herb.  Do the police really think that growers sell their harvest per gram anyway?  This $400,000 number makes no sense at all.  Why can't the police just be honest, oh I forgot they are looking for headlines.  Looks like their mission is accomplished.

Why don't we hear about Meth labs being busted?  Are the meth chemists paying the right people.  Sounds like it.
