LOL,,,

Recalling beef that was produced as far back as Feb 1, 2006, OVER 2 YEARS AGO.  What a freaking joke.

Just more politics.

Some of the "meat" was still in the food pipeline, and any attention to the bad practices of the "food" industry is more than welcome.

Simple solution.

Cook hamburgers till they are fully done. Period. End of story.  And another tip. If your beef is more than 6 months old, you might think about getting some fresher meat.  All of this is common sense.  But I guess we need the government to tell us not to eat meat that is 2 years old....

oh better yet, buy local or buy kosher/Halal meat. Why did it take the gov. so long to report this??? the majority of this meat has already been eaten buy our school children. This companies CEO and executive board should be held responsible for not ensuring the saftey of the meat.

Cooking your burger till it is shoe leather will not kill "mad cow" and it is a crime ,or at least is should be, to overcook a good prime rib. This stuff also went to the poor and elderly food programs...bye bye grandma!

Ground beef is always more susceptibale to food borne desease.  We were reminded during the ecoli scare that it's primarily on the surface of the meat and cooking it would destroy it.  Grinding it into the meat made it harder to kill.

Forgive me if I'm naive but how is being cruel to a cow going to cause a food borne illness and why is selling it to schools any worse than feeding it to your family at home?  I saw all the headlines saying "SOLD TO SCHOOLS" like it was terrible but not so bad if mom cooked it for the kiddies.

As usual, the hue and cry causes disjointed comments and scares that have nothing to do with the actual offense.

the animals should never had been put into our food source. The law stands against any sick animal be butchered for food. Also, thouse companies that sell to our schools are using our tax money, thus they dont really care since they really can get away w/ anything they want.

HAWWWWaaaaa...Just the other day someone on here mentioned Jack In The Box as being safer since their scare and now it, and In An Out,  are listed as the two fast food places who used that companies ground beef.  It's a conspiracy I tell ya..you aren't safe eating anywhere..not even your own kitchen.  You can't trust anyone. You can't even be a vegan because of the lettuce and other greens.

It has been years for me to eat fast food...something about teens preparing my food for low wages...concerns me that it may not always be safe, clean etc etc etc.

Slight correction. I did have an In & Out burger last year, while driving over the grape vine.

Mad cow is spread from brain, spinal cord and several other organs and that is why hamburger is a known carrier over a steak or prime rib since this matter can be ground in without notice from the end consumer.  As far as I know, the verdict is still out on bone marrow, which may add certain steaks to this category.

BSE is carried in the CNS

"probably" not marrow

UK and Canada to a lesser extent feed CNS parts

at least they used to

this is the biggest method of transmission amongst cattle

BSE however is not the biggest problem in this instance

as someone said COOK YOUR MEAT WELL!

posted by stickbugs on Feb 18, 2008 at 09:37 PM

It's the "probably" part of the "probably not marrow" that keeps me waiting for more answers.  Part of the problem with hamburger is that packers use mechanical pickers that clean the bone and then get bits from the central nervous system organs into the meat.

the cases of BSE I know about recently have been traced to cattle from Canada where feedlots feed ground up animal parts

remember in the sales when cows had a big B on them?

it was for Brucilosis

there are always going to be different things we need to be testing for and measures taken to prevent their spread

awareness amongst the consuming public is always good

unfounded hysteria is not

I would place your level of concern in the awareness category

The USA stopped the practice of feeding, discarded cattle parts back to live cattle in the late 1990s, when Mad Cow disease surfaced. On top of being fed cattle parts many of these meat packers also fed tonnage of dead cats and dead dogs to their livestock. Current FDA regulations say it still okay to render dead horses, poultry and pigs into cattle meal.  Please remember that a cow is a vegetarian with four separate stomachs to process grass and other foliage, not meat. All of this information is available in Fast Food Nation, and is extremely well documented.

And Nancy, yes the kitchen is no longer very safe when pathogens can be transmitted from counters and sinks to unsuspecting people who can then pass the bacteria along to others over the course of a day through casual lack of hygiene. The real tragedy is our government giving away all oversight and regulation of shoddy business practices to a handful of giant meat packers. Four large meat packing firms (ConAgra, IBP, Excel and National Beef) slaughter 84% of all the beef in America. Cattle ranchers have no control over price today or the ability to stay on land, which through suburban development is assessed at a greater value than is sustainable for the rancher. Prices are all controlled by these four companies. The conditions at the feedlots and slaughterhouses are not open for public inspection. If it were not for groups like the Humane Society and PETA, or authors like Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan Americans would have no idea about the types of practices routinely used by this uncaring cartel. Not a lot has changed since Upton Sinclair penned The Jungle.
