Parra booted from Capitol office
This is Hilarious! Parra booted from Capitol office
By James Geluso, Californian staff writer
jgeluso@bakersfield.com | Monday, Aug 18 2008 12:47 PM Last Updated: Monday, Aug 18 2008 12:49 PM
Nicole Parra is being kicked out of the Capitol.
Her staff of four is busy packing after receiving an order at 11:30 a.m. today to be out by 4 p.m., said her chief of staff, Derek Chernow.
Parra is not involved in the packing — she’s still on the floor.
“We’re doing what we can to pack up her personal belongings,” Chernow said.
Parra will be the only legislator without a Capitol office, he said. Instead, she will be in the Legislative Office Building, Room 175, across the street from the Capitol — a space about a third the size of the office she’s being evicted from, Chernow said.
“I’ve never heard of a legislator working out of the LOB,” he said.
He said he couldn’t say why Parra was ordered out.
In a Sunday night budget vote, Parra, D-Hanford, didn’t cast a vote. The budget proposal got 45 votes and needed 54 to pass, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Parra has also riled local Democratic party faithful for seeming to back Republican Danny Gilmore instead of Democrat Fran Florez for her Assembly seat in November.
Now Kids, play nice and share your office building.............. 67 comments from 19 users

Why don't we kick them all out of their offices until they can sit down like adults and work out a compromise budget. posted by

"He said he couldn't say why Parra was ordered out." Please let us know if you find out the reason. What ever the reason I don't see any excuse for not providing Assemblywoman Parra and her staff more time to accomplish this move. Common courtesy would be to at a minimum have given notice on Friday that this was in the works. How can anyone expect the average folks in California to be polite when our "leaders" in Sacramento behave so rudely. Shame on whoever set this in motion. posted by

Para is a DINO (democrat in name only) just like Lieberman. She'll switch sides to suit her interests. It must be hard to try to be a democrat in Kern Co. I wouldn't know. posted by

I seriously doubt it's as simple as that. I have a feeling the democrats in Sac are tired of her not supporting them. She refused to vote for the budget because of a comprehensive water bill she wanted in. Is she being punished for it? Yes. Is her term up in November? Yes. Is she holding up the budget? Yes. Are there state workers now making the federal minimum wage because of people like Parra that could care less about them? Yes. Did she deserve to be kicked out of her office? Probably. posted by

Yeah, Mom. A man who won't go along with the program is a maverick. A woman who won't go along with the program is a b****. Too bad we can't be like Saudi Arabia and lock her up in a dark room for the rest of her life. I'm no fan of Nicole Parra, but I'm even less of a fan of California's Democratic Legislators who disrespect non-clones and, by extension, their constituency. posted by

Audrey, did you realize that it was another woman that gave her the boot? Is she being sexist too?
Assembly speaker Karen Bass was the one who did it. Parra could have voted and it wouldn't have made a difference, but she had to be stubborn and obstain. She knew she would be punished.

I know you aren't a republican. I just wish you could see this issue beyond the fact that Parra is a woman. She is openly campaigning for a republican to replace her in the Assembly, and is likely using the water issue for political posturing for when she runs against Sen. Florez in 2010. Believe me, I'm about as far from sexist as it gets, but in this instance, I think the state Democratic Party did the right thing. There's just no reason to hold up the budget for a water bill. People got laid off and their pay cut because of stubborn legislators like her. They shouldn't get away with it. posted by

Why don't you look at the issue a little futher yourself. Why would she ever support Florez's mother after what Dean Florez did to her? Do you expect her to forgive and forget. He never did. He's the master at grudge holding. posted by

The smart thing to do would be to not indorse or campaign for anybody. Instead she's campaigning against her own party just to spite Florez. I understand what's going on here, and it probably won't work out very well for Parra. Honestly, I could care less about any of them. The state legislature is a mess of bottleneck politics. Seriously, how many times have they failed to agree on a budget on time? I understand that you Baker ladies seem to like Parra, but I can't figure out why. I certainly hope it's more than just her being a woman. posted by

There are so few women in our state and federal legislatures. This country (like every other country) has a history of sexism. Even though women make up half the population, there has never been a woman president. We're making progress, slowly. I guess what worries me is that the Democrats are just good old boys after all. People are STILL talking about RACE being a factor in this election, but NO ONE wants to talk about sexism being a factor. There were men (and women) in this election who, whether they realized it or not, didn't vote for Hillary simply because she was a women. I guess they thought she'd get stuck in a foxhole and get some kind of infection (that was Newt, I know.) My mom called it right when she said what they did to Parra they would never have done to a man. Lastly, the way you keep saying Parra needed to be PUNISHED is frankly creeping me out. Does she need a spanking, Daddy? posted by

Audrey, this could splash back on them ol' boys, and end up hurting them more than it hurts Parra. There could also be a certain amount of jealousy on Karen Bass' part. Look at her and then look at Nicole Parra.

Has anyone else ever been punished in this fashion? Would this, seriously, EVER happen to a man? Quote from the Sacramento Bee http://www.sacbee.com/111/s... The punishment is the first meted out by Bass, a Los Angeles Democrat, since she assumed the speakership earlier this year. Moving lawmakers who go against leadership into small offices has a long tradition in the Capitol.
In 2007, Assemblyman Todd Spitzer, an outspoken Orange County Republican, was moved to the smallest office in the Capitol after angering former Speaker Fabian Nunez. Spitzer quickly came to Parra's defense on Monday. "I love Nicole Parra," he said, throwing his arm around the Hanford Democrat in front of a TV camera. He said the move by Bass showed "a complete lack of maturity." Parra admitted that though she expected punishment for her non-vote Sunday she was "kind of shocked it would be across the street." "Even Todd Sptizer got an office in the Capitol," she quipped. posted by

Geez Catherine, now you're creeping me out. I didn't mean it like that. I meant punished in the same way that I think Joe Lieberman needs to be punished... politically.
The state senate has 10 women, and the assembly has at least 22. A few of the names I couldn't tell what sex they were. I think that's pretty good. I'm sure 20 years ago there weren't that many. I think most Californians don't really think about what sex the person is when they vote. I know I don't. I will admit that I didn't vote for Hillary, but it wasn't because she's a woman. It's because I'm not registered to vote Democratic in the primaries. posted by

Pete, I think you and I can (and will) agree on almost every issue except this one. I just wish men who call themselves feminists (or supporters of women's causes) would realize that the glass ceiling doesn't roll back for our women leaders. It's still there, just more subtle than it used to be. Re: Keith Olberman. Don't think he's sexist? Yeah, neither does he. posted by

At what point would you accept criticism of women in power as not being sexist? How many political leaders would it take to make the "glass ceiling" disappear? It almost sounds to me like you don't think men and women should be treated the same. Is that true? posted by

"The budget, now 49 days late, failed 45-30, with 54 votes needed for passage." Lets see 45 + 30 = 75. There are 80 members listed on the Assembly website. http://www.assembly.ca.gov/... Does that mean there were 4 other Assembly persons that did not vote? What if anything was done to them? If punishment is meted out it needs to be balanced and equal. Or else it just looks like a sad attempt at personal reprisal. posted by

I looked for a vote count but couldn't find one. I'd be willing to guess that they were republicans. Either way, Parra's problems with the democratic party go way beyond one vote refusal. posted by

I would accept criticism of women in power as NOT being sexist when the criticism is NOT about what they look like (as a couple of our posters remarked--so glad you guys think Parra is a hottie) and NOT unequal to the criticism male leaders get (notice moving Parra "off-campus" is the first time that's happened--even Spitzer got to stay in the building.) Also, I would love equal treatment for men and women, and when that happens (when women make up half of our state and federal senators and congressional leaders and when women stop earning 63% of every $ a man makes,) I'll shut up. If YOU think we're already being treated equally, yay for you. posted by

PP I didn't say her actions shouldn't open her to criticism. I'm saying she shouldn't have been punished in the way she was. It was done to humiliate her. What part of that distinction did you miss? This makes me nauseous. Is that how we want state politics carried on?

Please, not every politcal slap-down that happens to a female politician is because of her gender. First you say Hillary lost the vote because of her gender, now you're on the same train about Parra. Look at this realistically. Parra has been burning bridges for several months now over the Florez thing. It doesn't matter who started it. She's the one that went out and endorsed a Republican. Then she refuses to vote on the budget until her own pork barrel rider gets attached to it. So I could see why the Democratic party says "out you go", particularly since her current office was a luxury, not a right, and she has been given alternative office space. And yeah, it probably would have happened to a man if he acted the same way. You don't go around thumbing your nose at your party if you want to be treated fairly. And you don't get a free pass to thumb your nose at your party just because of your gender (or race for that matter). posted by
