RIP John Hughes ... an 80's icon has passed away
I was saddened to read that John Hughes has succumbed to a heart attack. Unless you lived under a rock as a teenager in the 80's, Hughes most certainly touched your life with releases such as The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He went on to write and direct many other fun and noteworthy films. He launched many careers, both those of actors and musicians. RIP. 10 comments from 8 users

Can someone post the link to the story? I picked it up off Drudge but I'm on an unfamiliar computer and don't have the patience to figure out how to link it. Once a Mac girl, always a Mac girl. I HATE microsoft live/Dell right now. posted by

Here's a link, Vanity. http://www.rr.com/entertain... I know what you mean about John Hughes. You and I grew up in the same era, when John Hughes movies were HUGE and they were a sort of touchstone for our generation. John Hughes's movies really helped define our generation as teenagers, in the same way that the British Invasion helped define teens of the 60s, and Elvis and drive-ins helped define the 50s. Every woman our age (and even much younger) has spent at least several hours of her teenage life daydreaming about the popular guy (Jake Ryan,) or the rebellious guy (Judd Nelson,) or the spontaneous, teflon guy (Ferris Bueller,) or all three. Most American women of our age, at some point, saw themselves in one of Molly Ringwald's characters, or Ally Sheedy's character, or Mia Sara's character. Most of our little brothers wished they were Kevin--they little boy who fought the bad guys ALL BY HIMSELF. And let's face it--who doesn't recognize their family in the Griswolds? I mean, who doesn't have a Cousin Eddy? You made a big impact on our lives, John Hughes. Thank you. posted by

I wasn't a teenager in the '80s but my brothers were so I was lucky enough to have seen all of his films. The three films that you mentioned are still among my favorites, along with Uncle Buck of course. The movie industry has certainly lost a great one. Rest In Peace, John Hughes. posted by

Catherine, thank you for posting that link for me. I am so PC challenged it's not even funny. I was so frustrated after an evening of setting up this computer and connecting the modem and router that I just gave up trying to navigate the browser. And I hate all the stupid pop windows that come up all the time. Oh well, at least we have a computer up here now. And you're so right about the "daydreaming" .... mine were always about Andrew McCarthy's characters. Sensitive boy-next-door type and all. He stole my heart in St. Elmo's Fire; so conflicted and misunderstood LOL! (not sure if that was a Hughes film or not) Reyna, I'm with you on Uncle Buck as well! posted by

"And I hate all the stupid pop windows that come up all the time" I think I know how to fix that one. If you are using windows internet explorer find the word tools in the menu bar. Selecting tools will produce a pull down menu from which you can turn a pop up blocker on or off. To limit the number of unwanted pop ups that appear during any internet connection period select the "turn on pop up blocker" option. Another link about John Hughes and his work. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id...

"And I hate all the stupid pop windows that come up all the time" Better yet, use Firefox or Safari. They both have great pop up blockers and are way more efficient. Safari for windows is pretty great. Firefox just has more add ons. posted by

His movies definitely were a big part of my "growing up" years. I completely agree with all that you said Cat. Bummer. Another one bites the dust... I still picture myself "pretty in pink"! posted by

sys_mom and Pete, thanks for your feedback. I had already tried loading Safari when I made that comment but became totally frustrated with the process as it was late and the constant messages from Dell and Microsoft interrupting me were really annoying! "What can we do to make your Microsoft experience better?" etc. It felt like when I was trying to cancel a Direct TV account; sorry, I don't want your service, or in this case, browser, so leave me alone. But now I'm back up here and had the time to deal with it, in addition to all the requisite plug-ins. What a hassle! And McAfee won't leave me alone either, LOL. I use Safari at home on my Mac as well as on my phone, so this "Live" browser was a foreign language that I didn't care to learn. Happy to report that Safari has been successfully installed.
