A question for the powers that be on this site ...
Why on earth do you think it's a good idea to allow bloggers to edit and/or delete their comments after the fact? I've used this convenient feature to clear up a typo here and there, but I have been a big enough person to let my gaffes stand and apologize accordingly. A recent staff blog had insults hurled right and left that have subsequently been deleted, and certainly not by the host of the blog. Could you possibly consider a revamp of your policy?

For people who bait for a certain kind of response and it doesn't work for them, they have a way out. --virgil posted by

Virgil, this is quite possibly the first and only time that I agree with you. Unless, of course, you go back and edit and/or delete your comment. posted by

Other blogging/forum sites allow editing but put a timestamp at the bottom of the post every time the post is edited by the author. That gives the author the ability to edit their words if they suffer remorse later, but also gives the rest of the community the ability to see that the post/comment has been edited since its original posting. I have no clue how easy it would be to implement such here. posted by

It is very convenient for cowards. I was called every name a certain fat mouth could think of and I had to be told by my friends because she deleted her stupidity.

I need to clarify and elaborate on a previous comment (what a surprise, eh?). When I wrote that this post isn't directed at Jason, I meant that I wasn't calling him out personally as I know that while he is our primary "babysitter" : ), he is not the only admin. who monitors. Also, I suspect that he alone did not make the decisions that led to topic of this blog. So, having said that, a response from Jason would be most welcome. posted by

Well that post did get cleaned up quite a bit didn't it? Good folks probably felt foolish enough to want to repair their "image". Let it roll off like water on a ducks back.

Exactly, Sage. There isn't a toilet plunger big enough to unclog that turd pile. That's why it's great to have two bathrooms, or in this case, other blogs to go to. ; ) posted by

I know you're right, Sage, about just letting it go; the deleting comments after the fact is so incredibly cowardly and childish, though, and it's a major pet peeve of mine. Once I realized that I was going to be raked over the coals, I could have been a little sissy and deleted my comments before too many people saw them. Instead, I was a big girl and tried to politely explain my position (twice) but that didn't matter to those rabid people. The name-calling was absolutely out of bounds. And the hate didn't stop. My biggest mistake was having a knee-jerk reaction to the tone of the column. I'm just so sick of the shrill style of media lately. SWINE FLU!!!! THE DEFICIT!!!!!! JIHAD!!!!!!! UNEMPLOYMENT!!!!!! and on and on and on. Oh well. Now I have some new stalkers. Lovely.

I think if the original tone had been "hey, we got wind of a problem and want to help you folks out" instead of "what's wrong with you people in KC don't you care about your animal abuse" my hackles might not have gone up so quickly. It was politely accusatory and that wasn't necessary. We ALL agreed this was a horrible thing to have happen and we all feel terrible about the animals suffering but not all of us read the paper or watch the out of town news and heard about it. I rarely even watch the local news but does that mean I don't care about animals? The other day I heard a commotion, dog/cat fight and tore to the door only to see my neighbor shooing away a pack of dogs from her yard. She was brave. There they were again, a trio of the fiercest chihuauas on the planet. Tails in the air, teeth bared, bristling with importance. Up and down the street they went causing every fenced dog around to go into a barking frenzy. It's not the first time I've seen them and have no idea who they belong to but they've obviously found another hole in the fence. I'm worried to pieces that one or all will get run over but by the time animal conrol can get here, they've disappeared. Things like that don't mean we don't care about loose dogs...I get angry whenever I see them on a regular basis because I know they aren't safely secured. And Vanity, you did the right thing leaving your post up and addressing it as well. posted by

A few years back my 14 year old cat was mauled and killed by a pack of dogs that used to run around the Truxtun/Mohawk riverbed area. I lived in those apartments on Mohawk. I got up the next morning and found him in the grass. Turns out my upstairs neighbor in the next building heard the commotion and tried to shoo off the dogs. One of them actually ran up the stairs after her. She was so afraid of the dogs that she couldn't come to my door and tell me what was happening. It was really late too so no sense in calling Animal Control. They were long gone by the morning. I was heart broken. That kitty and I had been through a lot together. I would hear those dogs barking at night and just get pissed, frightened too. posted by

vanity: Frequently if I reread a comment I just made and find a typo, I'll edit it so the typo's gone. Sometimes I'll edit when I remembered a last sentence i'd forgotten. Sometimes instead of doing that I'll simply comment twice in succession (which seems a little silly, when the "edit" is so convenient. However, I usually just write the things and let them sit, especially if they've been there more than 15 minutes or so. Then comment again if what I think is so important that it can't be left unsaid. You know how that is. Happens to me all the timie! (Do I need to add the LOL here? Hope not.) I just figure that the edit feature is there for a reason. posted by

I noticed the whole dog/acid burns thing after I got home. Didn't post 'cause I (pun) had no dog in the fight. But in my opinion, the whole thing got totally out of hand with lots of bruised egos and dumb remarks. editing would have been good posted by

Pogo, trust me, I would have liked nothing more than to delete my initial comments that started that whole lame flamewar; I was in a catch-22. If I simply deleted them, then the people who were already going off would have gotten even more aggressive and I think it would have made the situation worse. At least I let my original comments stand and explained my position as best I could. The next time a journalist hits a nerve with me I'll be sure not to acknowledge it on any blog that pertains to animals. I don't know of another demographic of people who stand for a cause that are so incredibly hostile and, well, I'll just leave it at that. Too bad it had to span five days and devolve into this: Nothing like hitting a girl while she's down, LOL! posted by

Alicen, I completely agree that the edit feature is a nice tool to have; my only complaint is the cowards who write scathing remarks then go back and edit or delete them after others have responded to the original comment. Bugs me! I'm sure that's quite obvious by now. I admit I have, in the past, deleted comments of my own, but never edited them so much that the entire tone and content changed. Then I realized that deleting my own comments was really disingenuous and made me a less credible person. So, even if I have regret for something I may have written, I still just let it stand because otherwise I'm no better than a troll. Haha!! Code is DVM BL ... could that be vet bill or vet bull? posted by

mrsearnhardt, that's horrible about your cat. I had an outdoor cat as a child (even though I was allergic, she was still "my cat") when I lived out on the river ... her name was Daisy, after Daisy Duke. She was deaf and never heard the neighbor's dogs coming and I watched her savage attack from my bedroom window. It's truly heartbreaking. I was so afraid of those dogs after that. So was my dad; when they would come running (three Rotts and a German Shepherd) he would jump into our dumpster when he was out front doing yardwork. It was easy to hear them coming because one of the Rotts had a tracheotomy after a fight with the Shepherd. You could hear that dog breathing two hundred yards away! posted by

Vanity: I read part of the "dog burn saga" and have to say that I could hardly believe what I was reading! I don't believe the blogs have ever been on fire like that. It was burnin'! But back to the topic: I remember one time having written a blog, and the first comment was one that was in my opinion vulgar. That's the only word that could be used to describe the comment. I reported it as a violation. I left it there so that Jason or whoever could see what it was that I found offensive. Then I left it there so that anybody else could see how completely offensive it was. I also blocked the offender from my blogs. Two or three weeks later -- or even more (it was a long time ago) -- I decided to delete it because I simply didn't want that thing on my blog, even for history's sake. To my utter surprise and dismay, it was impossible for me to delete it. I guess there's a time frame for making deletions, and I obviously missed it. If that ever happens again, I will report it, make sure it has been registered as a complaint, then delete it. I eventually removed the entire blog from history. Interestingly enough, almost every character I've blocked from my blogs has eventually been banned from TBC. That one was later banned. Shows that, in my own estimation anyhow, my instinct has been pretty good. I realize that others have strong views about blocking -- I just wanted to relate what I was about.
