Parent Wants Student Walk Out

The parents of the Panama Buena Vista School District have been complaining that the 8th grade graduation ceremony will not take place due to budget cuts.  My opinion is that 8th grade graduation is a trivial event.   Do you know any student that did not pass the 8th grade?  Who was not pushed on to 9th?  Do they have to pass a test to graduate from 8th grade?  What is so special about it?

I propose that if the parents want the graduation ceremony, they pay for their own event.  According to the paper there are 1,870 8th graders.  Graduation costs $25,000.  My 8th grade calculation comes up to $13.37 per student.

I would have loved not to have had a 8th grade graduation because

  1. It was stupid
  2. Uncomfortable
  3. Had to spend more time with people I disliked
  4. Not a big deal, whoopee I get to go to High School
  5. Had to wear a dress

obviously these parents dont get it that people lost their job due to budget problems....they want to cry?  they are crying to the wrong policy makers.....they should go to Sacramento and do it

Thanks.  Did not find the previous post.  Looks like most of us are in agreement.

vwilroy: back in the dinosaur days we had to pass the constitution test with a "C" or better to get out of the 8th grade. Don't know if there are any "requirements" any more as it seems everybody gets 'pushed' through no matter what.

IMO every student should have to pass every class with a "C" or better to get to move on to the next level.

The parents should take the little ingrates to Boomers, give them $10 each for video games, and tell them to get ready for high school.

It's only an eighth grade graduation.  I don't know why they have ever had these events.  They mean nothing, really.  Good for the district to do away with it.  Hopefully more districts will follow suit and save some money, perhaps put the money into something the students would actually have fun doing.  An eighth grade graduation is only for the parents anyway.  What student really cares about it? It's very irresponsible for parents to willfully keep their children out of school for a worthless cause  which would cost the school more money.  At a time when people are getting laid off, fired or taking pay cuts, this is ridiculous.  Get over it and be thankful you have children who are happy, healthy and can actually walk across the stage to accept their diploma, if given the chance.

For Witterpitters-----The children that I know that are in the eighth grade this year were expected to pass the Constitution test before moving on to high school.  They were given more than one chance to pass it if they failed to do so on their first attempt.  I don't know if it was a graduation requirement but they also were tested on who all of the Presidents were and when they were in office.

ward do you have ingrates? because i don't and i still would like at least a diploma and its for me personally,,,,and if the district was concerned about saving money, then they do not have to go to las vegas for whatever they say they are doing , they can put the money to use here,,,and if people want to keep their kids out of school to make a statement let them,,I am not but that my choice...
