The Garden Spot
I had lunch at the Garden Spot today and what a crowd they had there.  Not unexpectedly, the food was fresh, the breads delicious and the soup was wonderful.  What a great place to have a quick, healthy, satisfying and enjoyable lunch and still make it back to work on time.  Thank You to Keith and his staff.

The problem I found with the Garden Spot was the price.  With a drink it cost me 9 bucks..for lunch.  That's a little steep for my pocketbook on any regular basis.

Great picture Mr. Bartell.

Drink water... it is better for you anyway...

We used to eat at The Garden Spot regularly.  The food was great and they took The Press Pass which helped with the cost.  After they changed hands, they stopped taking The Press Pass and the quality and freshness of the food began to decline.  After a couple of distasteful meals, we stopped going.  If the food quality has improved, perhaps we'll give it another try.

I never found the price unreasonable as quality comes with a pricetag. On the other hand, I'd just as soon make my own. Buffets and all you can eat places are a waste...maybe that should be a waist...on me. I don't need a lot of food. Some people on the other hand think if they don't consume 3,000 calories a day, they'll starve.

Quality may come with a price but it isn't necessary.  You can still have quality without charging a lot.

As far as the drink goes, it did add a couple of dollars to the meal which surprised me since fountain sodas are extrememly cheap to serve.   I'm not a water drinker and feel that I should have what I like to drink.  Once in a while a place Like the Garden Spot is ok but on a regular basis..it's too expensive for a working gal.

Remember..Bakersfield buys it's restaurant food by the pound.  I don't eat a lot at one sitting so all the HUGE platters of food are wasted on me too.

As an afterthought..I'm not a big salad eather either so maybe that's the reason I feel it's overpriced.  If I got a filet mignon for 9 dollars I would consider it a bargain..if not a miracle.

Interesting comment on the all you can eat, buffet...  Why is it  when a person goes to an all you can eat buffet, that they have to eat all they can so they can "get their money's worth"??  Then they suffer for it when it comes time to digest the food, and take the anti-acid to relieve their heartburn or become too lazy to exercise and let the excess food be stored as fat.  Then they complain about being over-weight and have to go on a diet, which of course is usually followed by a round of laughter as they once again head to the buffet so they can "get more of their moneys' worth".

The restaurant is a business and has to charge accordingly to purchase the food and make a profit.  The restaurant suffers because a lot of time, people will take more than they can eat in the first place.  The extra food is thrown away.  The consumers complain that the price is too high and do not patronize the restaurant.  So what is a business person to do?  Ask you to only take what you can eat and eat everything that is on your plate? Sounds like my mother.  I soon learned not to take so much and cleaned my plate.  Sometimes that got me out of doing dishes as well!! :)

Was there a month ago and was disappointed.  New owners need to check quality especially for the price.  One soup was undercooked and no selection,  speciality salads = none! and bread table was really lacking.  They will have to really get it together for me to come back.  It was hard to beat when the Curtis' owned it!

I worked in a place that had an all you can eat salad bar and people would go back long after they were full and couldn't finish what they took.  THEN they had the nerve to ask for a to go box.  We finally put up a sign saying.. NO TO GO BOXES.

I make a habit of not taking much of something I'm not sure of...that way if I don't like it, I haven't wasted much.

The other problem with 'all you can eat' is that those of us who don't overindulge are in effect subsidizing those who eat way too much. It needs to be ala carte.
