Fall Garden PLans

OK, I want to plant a Fall garden this year. I've never done it before so I need some help. I'm thinking carrots and potatoes so far. What other crops have people had luck with for the Fall?

Squash, pumpkins, sugar snap peas all make a great fall crop.

Ants, foxtails and cat poop.

Sorry, I'm in a bad mood.

Audrey-Sorry that you are in a bad mood but your above post made me burst out into laughter.  Hope you day gets better.  Sorry to hijack witbee.

Good topic though. I'll keep my eyes open for this one.  I may try to plant something too.

I've killed one of my kiwis and all four tomato plants, it seems.   Who knew they expected water EVERY DAY?

You'll love the potatoes! Be sure to plant some red ones.

Broccoli can work,I grew some Brussel sprouts one year~ yummy but not everyone loves them. You could probably get in some lettuce, radishes, some green onions~ small crop but what the heck.

Pumpkins and winter squash are good~ plant your pumpkins in August to get Halloween fruit~ one year I had then ripen a bit early but I just kept turning them and they were fine come time. I had so many I gave them away.

Check out Sunsets Western Garden Book for more ideas. Good luck!

I have nothing to offer here because I can barely keep house plants alive, but witbee I have to say that your new avatar picture is absolutely adorable. I've been meaning to say that for a couple of weeks. Is that the same dog that was your avatar before? What a cutie!

I think it is the same dog. We have two and at first they looked very similar (chihuahua/pug mix we were told). This one is "The Colonel" and he has a monsterous underbite. Makes him look mean though he is a sweetie.

I really want to grow some potatoes. The funny think is I have grown large fields of them (baking, chippers, reds) but I feel like a beginner in a tiny backyard garden. Pumpkins would make the kids happy and get me some pie! Carots and onions are going in, too. Now I just have to build the garden.

I thought most pumpkins needed to be planted in June for a Halloween harvest - July 4 at the latest.  It depends on the variety of seed you plant.

Try broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, onions, leeks, and cabbage.

My garden this year was a dismal failure, as was the garden of several of my relatives.  Our tomatoes have died out and nothing else is growing.  The area in my backyard where I normally grow these looks brown and rusty and the grass is dead.  I have just given up.  The only thing that seems to be doing well are my fruit trees, especially the figs.

I think if you plant the squash and pumpkins now it will be ready by fall.  I'd also plant lots of herbs.  My mint, sage, catnip and jasmine are still doing well despite the heat - they tend to really love the fall climate.

Not fruit but why won't my bougainvillea bloom?

I'm mostly a carnivore so don't waste time with veggie gardens but I do know radishes will abound to the point that your friends will close the blinds and pretend to not be at home when they see you coming.  Do people really EAT radishes? I thought so at one time but now they taste awful.  I dunno about okra this late but it loves the heat and also grows like gangbusters.

Mostly I excel at growing weeds, johnson grass and crap grass.

Witbee, no offense but your dog looks like the boxer mix that won the ugliest dog in the world contest a few weeks ago.

Yep, he is quite ugly.

Noooo Witbee, not at all.  I love that face.  In fact I think the ugliest dog thing is a misnomer.  It should be the most unique.
