woofwoof - > WOOF! I'm Sniffing out Oddities! -> Do You Take Supplements???
Do You Take Supplements???

After going to the doc for a check up and off to do a blood test to check my cholesterol, my dad's wife told me, for high cholesterol I should take olive leaf extract and red yeast rice.  What?  Never heard of them.  Some ancient Chinese secret?

There's gotta be some people that just can't start their day without 'em.  My husband is one of them.  He mostly takes ones I've heard of, like Ginkgo Biloba, DHEA,  B Formula, Vitamin E, plus his multi vitamin.  He's usually the last one to get sick when a cold/flu hits our house, if he gets sick at all

Me, I try to eat right, and rely on my own body to take care of itself.  Taking nutritional supplements  is not my cup of tea.  I don't like that vitamin -y-  taste it leaves, yuck.  Plus the cost of the supplements are way too expensive.  I'm healthy, I think, and would rather spend that money on a hotel at the beach with room service.

How 'bout you?  Are you a slave to your supplements? Or do you think you can live without them?

Could live without them, but taking calcium and a multivitamin, plus (on suggestion of a blogger here) green tea extract.  But just started that one.

How are they working for you? Probably too early to tell.
I just heard about a class action lawsuit against Trimspa. Apparently they say it doesn't really work, which is exactly what I found out after going through a whole bottle and not losing any weight. At least the green tea stuff gives you more energy. Trimspa didn't even do that. Oh, but those red pills look so cool though.

Too early to tell.  Really just started yesterday.

Be careful of what products you take. Something as innocuous sounding as a multivitamin could even be dangerous. For instance, the Vitamin Shoppe's womens multi  formula was found to have had ten times the lead as the allowable amount.

You can get into trouble with colloidal minerals too. Sure they have lots of good minerals, and lots of toxic ones.

Herbs should be taken carefully too. For instance, if you are already on blood thinners, Ginko Biloba would be trouble.

Others also interact with prescription meds.

How did Anna Nicole lose all that fat???  I tried Trimspa too...didn't work.  The only time I really can lose weight, is when I'm sick.  If they could only put that in a bottle.  I don't mean the sick part, I mean that feeling you get when you are sick and don't give a hoot about eating.  I'd be a millionaire if I could figure that one out.

I agree Anitex, that's kinda why I don't want all those chemicals in my body....just too many possibilities for side effects.  You really have to be an activist of your own body.  Also, you should always tell your doctor about all those herbal supplements too.

I just read somewhere , that a woman taking calcium supplements, got severely depressed.  My doc has recommended I take calcium, and I don't want too.  But, because my bones haven't healed after this damn ankle fusion (it's been almost a year),  I have to consider it.

Several herbal supplements also interfere with anti-rejection drugs as well.

Nicotine and caffine are the only supplements I use.  :)

Hey, hey now--caffeine isn't a supplement, it's one of the four basic food groups.

I have no doubt that Anna Nicole had some sort of lipo or something to that effect. She unnaturally went from overweight to what appears to be very low body fat in a very short time. I really doubt even working out 12 hours a day could produce those results. It appears to be similar to the transformation that Janet Jackson went through recently. It's not natural, that's for sure, and it sure as heck wasn't trimspa. All I could figure they did was expand in your stomach so you couldn't eat as much, but I never dropped one in water to test it.

Woofwoof, if you still have a trimspa, can you test it out for us? Drop it in a glass of water for a while and see if it acts like one of those mini sponges that expand. It's not like it's worth ingesting anymore.

Ok, just for the heck of doin' a science project.

Trimspa in a cup! I dropped it in and left to walked the dog around the block.  Just came back and WOW,  it's expanded to, let's see, how big.....I guess about as big as my thumb.  So, I guess, if I had dropped in two, it would somewhat give you a small sense of fullness.  Don't waste your money people!

Just what I thought. I remember reading the label and it saying to take it with water otherwise it could expand in your throat causing you to choke. I guess we figured out their secret. Did you dump it out yet or will you give us updates?

It reminds me of those old Keystone beer ads where they say their beer has a "specially lined can"
I opened one up and realized the lines they were talking about were on the outside of the can. The design has little lines on it.

No I hadn't dumped it out yet, but I just stuck my fingers in it and it feels like sandy decompsed cardboard fiber.  It hadn't expanded anymore....it's now down the drain.  What would Bill Nye say?
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Feb 6, 2007 at 10:38 AM
He'd say don't take trimspa I imagine. Hopefully it won't clog your drain.  ( ;

Thanks for making good use of your leftovers. I wonder if we can jump on the class action suit? I don't have any receipts or anything, but I wouldn't mind a refund.

Woofwoof, it likely is cardboard.  There are two species which eat both meat and cellulose--rat and man.

I have never taken supplements. I get all the vitamins I need in rare steak.
Plus I don't want some surprise Barry Bonds scandal to crop up in my household.

Ah, but I'll bet the cattle that contributed your steak took supplements...

The best thing to combat cholestrol with is a decent diet(you dont have to go overboard)and plenty of excercise. I take Omega-3 and a mulit vitamin every day at the direction of my doctor and PT guy at the gym. A couple of ounces of walnuts a day(if you can handle them) is great for lowering bad and raising good cholestrol. Being diabetic makes me more aware of what I eat( don't get me wrong..I still cheat!)and how I take care of myself. My cholestrol has never been a big problem, but at one point I had a triglyceride count of 2000, blood pressuer of 180/110 and an at rest pulse of around 105. In just a few months of scaling back on what and how much I ate and getting back into the gym, my tri-g's were at 190(still higher than the recommended 140), cholestrol at 170, pulse at 80, BP at 120/70 and I had lost over 30 pounds. I am not on BP meds, my dibetes meds were cut in half four months ago and the doc says if the numbers stay consistent, she will take me completely off them in a couple of months. So, like all fitness and nutritionists as well as doctors have said all along..Diet and exercise will do what needs to be done. You just have to do it.
