Heat and Pets Take Care of Four Legged Family Members

Re-posting this so it will remind some of you that your pets need special attention during this heat wave.

Since the heat is here and you want to stay cool, do NOT forget your pets. You don't need to spend a lot of money to keep your pet healthy.

For those that keep their pets outside here is a few ideas that isn't just great ideas some of it should be mandatory.

Always keep a huge bucket of water. A little bowl will not work. No matter what size your pet is. Make sure that it doesn't sit in the sun, it can heat up to the same temperature of the surrounding air.

A small child's swimming pool will be good for putting their paws in and drinking. Do not get a blow up pool.

Having a doggy door to a cool room. Do not buy from a pet store, home improvement stores have them cheaper.

Cooling misters. Not just good for pets but for you too. (Mine are up in the breezeway when my clients venture outside the air is cooler, the concrete is misted so its not hot on their paws. Walmart has the cheapest, but they are getting low in stock.)

Always shade, if you don't have a porch or trees MAKE shade. A dog house won't work, doghouses holds heat in. Use something that doesn't have solid sides and is large. You can make a roof mostly anywhere. Scraps of plywood, a tarp, a large tent, or even ask your kids to build it. They have great imaginations.

I believe pets shouldn't be outside all the time, but unfortunately some people don't have a choice.

Dog dies in BMW

Saw this on the KCAL news... the live report on the news, the rp said that the owner was there for 4 hours as the dog was in the bmw with the windows cracked. The news also said that the owner is not allowed to be around pets until further notice.

I wanted to let people know that pets need to be cared for TOO! Maybe this will make pet owners think.

(CBS) CANOGA PARK, Calif. A man was arrested for felony "animal neglect" after his dog was left unattended in a car in Canoga Park and died of apparent heat exhaustion, authorities said Thursday.

Bennett Goldberg, 55, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services reported. He was held on $20,000 bail, according to the sheriff's department.

A witness saw Goldberg's Labrador retriever about 1 p.m. Tuesday in an unlocked car in the 6800 block of Owensmouth Avenue, officials said.

Someone called 911, and another person tried to give the dog some water, but the animal went into convulsions and died, officials said. Police arrested Goldberg a short time later.

If convicted of felony animal neglect, Goldberg could face up to three years in prison.

Needs a Good Home! Please help

3 Year old male Lab - Neutered, house trained, playful, spoiled

The owner doesn't have the room for Jack. Jack is a big Labrador needing a great home with a fenced in yard and possibly a doggy door. Jack is looking for a loving family, he is great with other dogs and children. He does need his ears cleaned because of his floppy ears. We will start you off with the current medicine but you can consult your vet for alternatives. He is micro chipped, which the current owner will call and transfer the contact info when new owners take Jack.

Last time at the vet he weighed 90#.. When new owners take Jack, they will need to license him and get his shots, which he will be needing in less then a month.

He comes with his own bed, toys and a partial bag of dog food (Nutro Ultra).

Currently the owners are on vacation and they are boarding the dog with me (Bakersfield Pet Care, The Pet Nanny). I am offering this dog with an adoption fee so that I know only serious loving people will want this big baby. The owners have given me full authority to pick the great new family. I would keep him but I do not have the room because I have dogs coming and going with my overnight and daycare.

I have taken care of Jack in the past for up to a week at a time, I haven't had any problem with him except that he loves to be with people and if you are not careful that he will want to be your lap dog.

Dog Park Death

Dog parks are great but when it comes to personality of dogs, big or small, you don't know how they will react. The nicest dog can even have a bad day.

I took my JaLo to the dog park on Kroll Way and was confronted with two large golden retrievers and they surged (and growled) at her but the owner says its 'ok'... no its NOT thats my baby they went after! I immediately took her and left but not without speaking my mind to the owner. Dogs can be unpredictable no matter what type of breed, size or what the owner says. I have taken care of hundreds of dogs and have seen a lot.

I have NEVER and never will take a clients dog to the dog park. The article above is proof positive that the worst can happen.

Grr (in the article) didn't deserve it and I wish the BEST for the owners.

Last Saturday we raised over $500 at our Relay for Life Garage Sale. For those that found us, we want to give you a HUGE thank you.

We did not advertise this function except for the internet and signs on the road. We did as much advertising that we could without a cost.

Traveling with Pets

I see it everyday and it breaks my heart.

When you are traveling with your pets, do NOT put them in your lap. Pets are an extension of your family and you love them like a family member (as they should be). Would you drive with your child in your lap? No, of course not.

Children have car seats, pets have car seats but if you do not want to use a pet car seat that is perfectly fine. But don't put your pet in your lap. Your pet should be in the back seat with the windows up or enough where they can not jump or fall out. Then there are traveling kennels (which I do not like).

For those that drive with their pet in their lap, have you realized what can happen if you have to suddenly stop or if you get hit? Your pet can fall to the floor if you slam on your brakes and if they do fall they may block your access to your vehicles peddles. And worse case, if you get hit or hit someone they can fall to the floor and get trapped from impact.

If your pet hangs out the window, have you thought what would happen if you turned sharp or was hit from the opposite side? Your pet can fly or fall out the window and no one wants to think of what could happen then. You can always leash your pet and hook the leash to the center seat belt and give them enough length so they can still get their nose and head out the window. You should never let your pet put more then 50% of their body out the window, gravity may become a factor with your driving.

Then those that travel with their pets in the back of the truck. The law says that they must be tethered in so they don't fall out. Don't agree with that. If you turn to quickly, get hit, flip your truck... your pet would be hung. Yes, not a pretty picture. Your pets, if you must have them in the back of your truck, travel with them in a very sturdy kennel.

Please, I see this every day and I have also seen what can happen to our precious pets.
