My Second Bike Ride - Vita Brevis, Tempus Fugit! - CalamityJanie's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Again, I circled some local blocks this evening. This time, for some reason, I was a little nervous. I am uneasy getting used to the gears and brakes and whatever, and paid more attention to that than on my first ride. Plus, some jerk in a big pickup came speeding down Holtby, disregarding cross streets, probably ignoring stop signs, and so forth. I had my helmet on and was being careful, but still, I see the dangerous animals that lurk here. I am thankful for the nice, wide streets....and I know I am a big chicken, and will get used to this new jungle eventually.

Going camping this weekend; am tempted to bring my bike, but my fellow camp mates will not be hauling theirs. I have my little trailer, which would make it easy, but my friends I am meeting are tent-camping so it would be harder for them to find the space to lug a bike. I would rather spend time with them than to go off on my own!

Jun 19, 2007 at 01:06 AM : Go try the bike path...

Go try the bike path by Yokuts Park. You won't get run over, and it's very pleasant. I'm an avid bike rider, but I try to stay off most roadways. There are people that do not want you on the road, and then there are people who can't see you on the road. It's a lose lose situation for you.

Also, you could try the bike path at Riverwalk Park. Its the same one that goes next to Yokuts Park. In fact it goes all the way from the Panorama Bluffs below Bakersfield College to Hwy 43 Enos Lane near I-5. Its a pleasant 8 miles from Riverwalk Park to I-5 (I've rode the path from Riverwalk to just past the sign that says "Enos Lane 5 Miles." No offense, but I think Riverwalk Park is A LOT nicer than Yokuts or Beach Park.

Don't be afraid of the gears! They're there to make your ride easier and more enjoyable. I know sometimes they don't always want to shift when you click the shifter and sometimes gears want to shift on their own! I've had both problems NUMEROUS times and I hate it!

Regarding dangerous drivers, you're not alone. I can't even count the number of crazy people I've seen on Hageman Rd. just between Old Farm Rd. and Calloway Dr. I've even almost been hit by some of these drivers who just don't know how to share the road with bikes. And one time earlier this year, I even saw a motorcyclist on Hageman do a "wheelie" all the way from Jewetta Ave. to near Old Farm Rd. Thankfully he wasn't anywhere near me!
