Her life story makes Barrack look like an afirmative action empty suit even more.

DENVER - Two of the leading candidates to be John McCain's vice presidential pick — Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — appear to be out of the running, NBC News reported Friday.

Pawlenty has been told he won't be chosen by McCain, according to NBC's David Gregory. And Romney won't be at today's Dayton, Ohio, rally with McCain, NBC's Chuck Todd reported. Romney spent Thursday courting donors in California.

Earlier in the day, Pawlenty downplayed his chances.

"I'm not going to be there. I plan to be at the state fair. You can draw your conclusion from that," Pawlenty said on his weekly call-in radio show on WCCO-AM in Minneapolis.

Friday's developments raised the possibility that others, such as former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge or Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, could be named, or that McCain could choose a wild card candidate from any number of prospects.

'Hockey mom'
As the political community turned desperate for clues, speculation moved toward Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the so-called "hockey mom" credited with reforms of her out-of-the-way state.

A Gulfstream IV from Anchorage, Alaska, flew into Middletown Regional Airport in Butler County near Cincinnati about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, said Rich Bevis, the airport's manager. He said several people came off the plane, including a woman and two teens, but there was no confirmation of who was aboard.

"They were pretty much hustled off. They came right down the ramp, jumped in some vans here and off they went," Bevis said.

"It was all hush, hush."

Sage, back when affirmative action was first getting going I lived in Tehachapi where two of the three main employers were cement plants. Their quotas required a given number of employees be women. At one point the company my ex worked for needed to hire and the law required the next person hired be female. The guys were outraged as hauling around 90 pound bags of cement was beyond most womens ability.

They didn't care about the female part but were mad that they had to take on a woman co worker who couldn't hold up her end and ut more work on those who could..

Fast forward days when I played on pool leagues and when putting my quarters on the table got that rolling eyes "oh Gawd, a woman" attitude. That was just before I'd take the table away from them reminding them that you didn't need to be a line backer to shoot with a 19 ounce pool que.

I say all this just to say I'm not a feminist, I'm just smart enough to know that women can't do EVERYTHING men can do but the things they CAN do just as well, should be allowed witout any snickering from the locker room boys. :-)

Case in point. I was once assigned to bartend a bachelor party. I was (and still am) a woman in my early fifties (no longer that) and was in a room full of randy young men with fists full of dollar bills and two strippers with a kiddie pool and Mr Bubbles.

After that fiasco I raised holy hell with my supervisor and told her she should have assigned that to our young male bartender. It wasn't a matter of ability, it was a matter of what's appropriate for everyone's benefit.

My POINT is if you're big enough, tough enough, smart enough, and quallified, there's no reason anyone shouldn't be in public office and your sex should not be used aganst you. Especially as a smoke screen or red herring.

We "import " most of our oil from Canada, Saudi, and Mexico, I think most people know that. We are approaching a level of 70% imports presently.

We use about 20 mil bbls a day which translates to 7.3 bil bbls per year.

What most people don't realize is that there are billions potentially recoverable in OCS, and just that coupled with utilization of CH4 and clean coal usage can make us virtually energy independent in just a few years if handled right.

But these are "fossil" fuels (unless you go to the Nancy Pelosi School of Geo-Science) and the Left doesn't like that.

If we use the fossil fuels as a bridge to other forms of energy, meanwhile increasing refining capacity, we can get to energy independence much sooner than the Loons of the Left will have you believe. Palin is well versed in this BTW.......

Purely from a strategic viewpoint, Palin only has 2 months to "introduce" herself to the country at large. That's not a lot of time for anyone hinging their vote on McCain's VP choice. The choice of Biden was different because he was a known commodity--you already either liked him or you didn't. I don't really think it would have mattered to most people who McCain picked anyway, though. Let's face it--people have already divided up along party lines (myself included) and McCain could have picked Darth Vader for all anyone would have cared.

What I think is funny, though, is that, by choosing Palin, it really does seem like McCain is trying to nab any undecided Hillary supporters. Considering that most (if not all) of Hillary's supporters were pro-choice, picking no-choice Palin was kinda wishful thinking. Ya know, 'cause the gals just vote for other gals, and not because of, like, ISSUES or anything complicated like that.

You can think whatever makes you happy

But I have followed her career in AK since 2006 after a fishing trip there and listening to the locals talk about her.

I admit I was also touting Carly Fiorina, HP baggage and all, for a while. I felt like a woman on the ticket was what McCain needed not only for demographic reasons but others as well. It just happened that, of his available choices, there were more women out there who could really help him than men.

Of course, as my obvious pleasure with his choice upsets you so much is an added bonus......

I don't know if anyone else remembers it but Chico really did bring up Palins name a while back. At the time I remember thinking "WHO?" and dismissing it from my mind. I really thought he'd go with Romney, then it looked like Pawlenty....whouda thunk it would be Sarah Palin?

After MY jaw dropped this morning I got a huge kick out of listening to the pundits and talking heads ALL stunned. I think it was a magnificent move whether it takes McCain to the White House or not. Just causing that magnitude of shock wave to a jaded political world was worth it all.

I seriously hope you are being facetious. I'm glad McCain picked this relative non heard of governor who seriously lacks the the overall aptitude of being President of the United States. I am sure holding the position as Govenor of Alaska has weight and is prestigous, however, that does not give her much expertise on a national level. Kern county has more population than Alaska, but that sure doesn't make any of the county's supervisor ready for VP spot.

Well, JJ, speaking of "overall aptitude of being President" you might want to look more closely at YOUR candidate. And he is the top of the ticket as opposed to Palin. He has never had a real job other than "organizing" malcontents and serving in Illinois Senate where he was mostly a no show and voted "present" when he did show. Voting present is like being a no show BTW. He's served 140 days in the US Senate where, like his Veep mentor inside the beltway mentor, he just decided who to pay off with tax payer dollars -- thats some good experience isn't it?

Flying once a week from Bakersfield to DC and back will run you 500 bucks in coach or 2000 in business class. It's what these things cost, but I'm not say McCarthy is somehow elitist. Well, not because of that.

One of the things we can expect from an Obama/Biden Presidency is that our rail system in this country will not only be better funded, but more efficient. Biden has fought hard to preserve Amtrak, while the Republicans don't think it's worthy of their time. What do you need a train for when you can fly your private jet, right? Well, your wife's private jet anyway.

I'm athinken' so much had been said so rapidly since yesterday morning that things people said are getting mixed up with things other people said so that no one really knows what anyone actually said. Not to mention things people DIDN'T say that other people thought they said when they were thinking about something someone else said.
