New free stuff - Free Stuff - FreeStuff's Blog - Bakersfield.com

We had a big turnout for the first week of Free Stuff, so to avoid a let down I figured we would offer up two items this week.

The first is a bottle of McCormick's Root Beer Concentrate. I'm not sure when or why this little bottle showed up here. Probably a few months ago.

One note: I originally thought this was just a bottle of root beer flavoring, but upon reading the back of the box I discovered you actually use this stuff to BREW root beer, using yeast and fermentation and everything! You have been warned.

So how do you win this curiousity? Post your best root beer memory. here.

Extra points for anyone who actually has made root beer at home.

As usual, you can find the rules here.

Back in the late 60's.

105 degrees, middle of the summer.

Shafter.

There were about 10 of us neighborhood boys, 10 to 12 years old, and we would all get 10 cents a day to go to the public pool several blocks away. Many times though, we would put our money together and next-door-neighbor Glenn would hop on his sting ray bike and peddle his way to the A&W root beer stand. For $1 (95 cents plus 5 cents tax) he would come back with a gallon of fresh root beer. We would sit in the shade of a big palm tree in our front yard and guzzle the stuff 'till we all had a belly ache, then turn the sprinklers on and spend rest of the afternoon running through the cool water.

This is recent memory. I have a friend from England, who can't stand Root Beer. Apparently it's a scent for a disinfectant there. She says, "Why would i want to drink something that smells like hospital floors?"

Old memories....A&W also back in the 60's & 70's. It was all about the float. And the spoons with numbers on the back of them to collect. I wanted all the numbered spoons.

May 5, 2007 at 02:05 AM : Yum! I love root beer....

Yum! I love root beer. I don't drink soda very often, but sometimes I just can't resist. :) I didn't know McCormick made a root beer concentrate.

Well, I certainly can't come up with an amazing story like the rest of you, but it's not my fault I'm so much younger! Everything has certainly changed since way before I was born, hasn't it? Anyway, here's my story.

I had a wonderful fourth-grade teacher when I was younger. If you were a good student who completed all of your homework and school assignments throughout the quarter, you would be invited during recess to a special root beer float party. I was always invited because I was so good about doing my assignments, and I loved drinking/eating my root beer float while others were outside playing. What a treat! My teacher even made sure I was sent home with one when I left school early one day to go find a pig for the fair.

That may not seem important to anyone else, but when you think about what the kids aren't allowed to eat in school these days, I feel fortunate to have received those root beer floats back then. I think that was eight years ago, but I'm not good with math, so I'm not exactly sure. I just thought I'd share my story since it didn't look like this blog post got as much attention.
