Gube, "Rocky" (Rockford Files Audrey) Noah was a character. My mother in law had the Wards catalog store before we took it and one day he came in to place an order. He came to the counter and, as I always did, asked "the name you order under" and he replied "Noah Beery Jr." I was sooooo embarrassed because I didn't even recognize him. I've often wondered what he thought.

He was married to a ditzy gal named Lisa who was really flighty. He would just stand, leaning against the wall, smoking his pipe, and wait for her to scramble up an order from the catalog. He was a VERY nice man..courtly and a gentleman. As was Jack Palance. Chuck Conners on the other hand, was a jerk.

Friend of mine sold him a Quarter Horse years ago. He was sooooo proud of it. Had no idea what he had (or didn't have).

He was bragging to my wife when they were a loadin him an she just looked over and quietly said to him, "they musta seen you comin from at far ridgeline!"

On my mother's eyes I swear he was too fulla himself (and/or stupid) to know she had just cut him ta pieces. All the cowboys standin around there were dyin.........

Chico, when the guy next to the ranch had to sell his buffalo he had a big roundup and invited Chuck Conners to join them. I was in the little VW bug when I saw him come riding up the road so hung over he couldn't sit up in the saddle. The round up was over by the time he straggled in so I led him back to the ranch to put the horse back in the corral. It had one of those sliding bolt into a pipe locks and he couldn't figure out how to get it open. I had to open it for him. Once inside he untied the girth and tried to pull the saddle off..it wouldn't come and he kept pulling. I had to stop him and tell him he needed to unhook the breast collar before it would come off. What a phoney..and a drunk, as well as a jerk. LOL

I'd find myself a cowboy to marry and buy a nice huge ranch, on which I would fill it with buffaloes, horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, etc., etc. -- but mostly buffaloes and horses! We'd keep the buffaloes as pets and ride the horses, and we'd have to make sure the cattle didn't mix with the buffaloes. We'd be sure to keep all the buffaloes alive, and we'd only have to kill a buffalo for meat if it became agressive. I'd be sure to reserve a nice piece of the land specifically for farming, and we'd grow everything possible, but of course I'd need extra land to do the rotating of my crops so the land didn't get so tired of itself. Oh, jeez -- and don't forget to keep the goats away from the buffaloes; you wouldn't want the buffaloes to get that disease and die from it! That's an important one.

I'd also found (err...establish? What's the word I'm looking for???) my own agriculture newspaper for all the farmers and ranchers, but I'd have to do all the copy editing myself once it got started, because I don't think I'd ever find a copy editor I could possibly trust to do everything the way I want it to be done.

Shoot...I ran out of money. Perhaps I've given this a little too much thought....ha ha ha! Very creative, right? I am a silly chica.

Gube...Chuck may have seemed cool, that is if the drinking, the attitude, the trying to crowd in line at Town and Country Market , and his penchant for little girls doesn't bother you much.

Audrey, I lived in Tehachapi for 15 years and met Noah at teh Wards Catalog store, Jack Palance at the Indian Hills Pow Wow next door at the Indian Hills Ranch, and Conners in the market and at our ranch on the buffalo roundup.

Robin...Be careful what you wish for with buffalo. They are NOT domesticated creatures and when the urge to migrate hits them, they will go though barbed wire fences like they were paper chains. I lived in two trailers while rebuilding the ranch house and while in the first, a 26 footer, the buffalo stampeded in the night. I could hear them thundering past the trailer and all I could do was pray they didn't bump into it. Looking back it's really funny, but at the time, I was petrified. Sitting in a 4 wheel drive pickup staring eye to eye with one of the bulls is a little intimidating too.

I wrote on a previous blog that the guy was ordered by the county to get rid of them as they presented a hazard when they escaped and were tearing up the trees at the lake not to mention people gardens.

They're majestic, but not good for pets.
