CSUB President's Day Outrage - That Bonny Loon - ThatBonnyLoon's Blog - Bakersfield.com

February 19, 2008

To Whom It May Concern:

I was surprised to hear my professor announce that we had homework due on Monday February 18, 2008. I asked for clarification of the day, due to President’s Day. My professor reaffirmed that we would have class on President’s Day. I thought this seemed strange, so I looked into it more over the weekend. I found the academic calendar for CSUB online and noticed that my teacher’s assertions were correct. I also noticed that the campus was closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and would close for Cesar Chavez Day.

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez did great things for our country and for civil rights. However, I believe that their accomplishments pale in the face of those of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. I believe it is not unfair to say that without George Washington and Abraham Lincoln we would not have had a Martin Luther King, Jr. or Cesar Chavez. Or at the very least, we can be sure that we would have had to wait far longer to see one of their likes arise in America.

I could put together a large corresdpondence making my point undeniably clear and persuasive, but I will constrain myself for now. I will only say that this is an outrage on our country. I cannot believe that the media ignored this situation. I am now writing this letter to President Mitchell, and sending a copy to the newspapers and the CSU administration. I desire no reply or recognition as the author of this statement. I desire action. I desire movement towards a greater respect for our country’s heroes.

As a citizen of the United States of America, I demand that we celebrate our country! I demand to see more American flags on the campuses of our government run schools. I demand the celebration of our country’s leaders. We are going down a dangerous road. I will not remain silent until our schools have more American flags on their campuses. And, I will continue to speak out against the ignoring of those holidays that celebrate our country’s founding and principles.

Sincerely,

A concerned student and citizen.

Maybe you should stay more informed. CSUB announced several times over the course of the past few weeks that the school includes this day-off (holiday with pay) during the winter break. No one is stopping you from observing in your own peculiar way any President's birthday. Have a mai-tai on me to honor Eisenhower getting Hawaii in as a state during his term.

As a CSUB student and employer of Panama Buena Vista, it's strange to have to go to school, yet not work. I see it that the last two mondays where elementary and high school students had the day off, why not the CSU Bakersfield? I understand that college's don't recited the "Pledge of Allegiance", nor does each classroom have an American flag hanging in the corner, but if a majority of the educations take the day off in remembrance of these American heroes, we should too. I did go to class on monday however, where i also noticed adult students having to bring their children to class because they had the day off, yet not the parent. Maybe some day soon, ALL schools will not only teach about these great men and women who made history, but acknowledge and remember them to.

A.P., that's insane. You know just as well as I do that if we did observe President's Day when everyone else observes it, we would still have a winter break. That excuse does not work. And, it also doesn't work to say that "oh, well we will observe it over spring break." What's next, the 4th of July? Memorial Day? Veteran's Day? Why don't we just throw those into the winter and spring break? Why don't we say, hey lets just observe everything during the times where we would already have a break scheduled. Pathetic.

Color 9, I wish we would have had the 15th off. But we were still sitting there in class here in Bakersfield.

ChicaEsquela, I do read my syllabus, thank you. And if you have never had a syllabus that lacks actual detail, then you must be new to a University. My syllabus does not have dates or assignments listed, they are assigned at the end of class. If I would have had president's day off, I probably would have had a bar-b-q with family and most likely have had an in depth discussion about which president was the best for our country with my stubborn uncle.

Money talks, I read that story and it is outrageous. They stay in school on President's day so they don't interupt classes?! What about Memorial Day? What about Veteran's Day? I guess they don't? Also, the story said that they leave it open so that we can have Christmas Eve off? I guess it says that they can close the campus Christmas eve if we stay open for Pres. Day. What about Cesar Chavez day? And I've since I started going to school at a very young age in a very liberal Washington State, we've always had the schools closed on Christmas Eve, and we observed the other federal holidays as well. And that was in liberal WA. I expected more from a liberal U in conservative BK.

I'm still waiting for the media story showing the disrespect of CSUB for our American past time.

A syllabus without due dates? That's bizarre. A syllabus is like a contract between student and professor, is it not?
