Pakistan Offers Safe Harbor to Bin Laden - All Politics Are Local - TomW's Blog - Bakersfield.com

I'd like to give a bit of ramp up here, but the article speaks for itself:

From Gulfnews.com
"Miranshah: Pro Taliban militants and the Pakistani government signed a peace deal on Tuesday, according to Pakistani negotiators.

The militants said they would stop attacks in Pakistan and across the Afghan border on the condition that the Pakistani government stop air and ground operations in the Waziristan region and dismantle newly built checkposts.

People arrested during military operations will also be released under the agreement and confiscated property, including weapons, would be returned."

Yes, it seems our allies in Pakistan are negotiating peace with the Taliban and returning their property and weapons. But that's not the best part. Remember that guy who Bush wanted Dead or Alive? That of course was in 2001. Later he said he wasn't that concerned about him. Apparently, the treaty goes a step further:

From ABC:

If he is in Pakistan, bin Laden "would not be taken into custody," Major General Shaukat Sultan Khan told ABC News in a telephone interview, "as long as one is being like a peaceful citizen."

So Bush is about to lay the smack down, right? Countries that harbor terrorists are the same as terrorists and all that. If his doesn't, he has just surrendered in the real war on terror.

Sep 5, 2006 at 11:09 PM : More as the story...

More as the story rolls in:

The Pakistani regime of Gen. Pervez Musharraf has been negotiating truces - with the Bush administration's encouragement - with Islamic separatists in North Waziristan and South Waziristan, mountainous tribal areas along the Afghan border where U.S. officials think bin Laden may be hiding.

Anyone want to try to make sense of this?

You know, this is why we need Democrats to take over. They are at least serious about fighting the War on Terror. Bush and his guys just want to screw around. This war would be over if we had someone in charge who cared about Americans instead of corporations.

.

If I read this at face value, let's think about it for a moment.
.
Imagine Ted Bundy or Richard Ramirez, serial killers, wanted by the police. But after finally solving the case and linking them to their crimes, they find Ted and Richard "behaving as peaceful citizens." The police go home, without making an arrest.
.
(And imagine the screaming about "soft on crime liberals" while you're at it.)
.
Well, if what ABC has reported what I think it has, Bush is willing to let a man go free who killed a hundred times as many people.

"If someone is found there, we will see what is to be done," General Sultan said today. "Pakistan is committed to the war on terror, and of course we will go after any terrorist found to be operating here," he said.

So they've agreed not to go in to Waziristan. They'll give the Taliban their weapons back, but if they find someone operating as a terrorist in the area that they will not enter, they "will see what is to be done."
