What are Bakersfield's quality of life laws? - Ask The Californian - askthecalifornian's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Q: Can you tell me anything about the so-called "quality of life" laws that we have here in Bakersfield? I would like to know what they are and how we get them enforced.

Thank you,
Shirley Bodirsky

A: Enforcing those laws generally falls to the city’s Code Enfrorcement Office. To report a complaint, call 326-3712.

Code enforcement is all about making sure that properties are kept up, said Randy Fidler, the city’s chief code enforcement officer. That means taking care of weeds and abandoned vehicles, limiting dogs to three per house, and especially securing abandoned buildings.

“If we have a property owner who isn’t keeping the house up, we have to do something about it if we get the complaint,” Fidler said. “We’re going to get the process rolling. Within 45 days, you’re going to see something take place.”

If it’s an emergency, such as an unsecured pool, the department can take action faster.

I think that the real question hear is why isn't our community taking the necessary steps to enforce this Code? Does any one know what those steps are? Any suggestions? Has anyone lived in a city that did enforce this type of code? I don't live in the city limits, does the county have a similar code? I agree, we need some major help in this area!
