What's up with the poorly designed Mall View Road? - Ask The Californian - askthecalifornian's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Q: Can you tell me who is responsible for maintaining Mall View Road between Mount Vernon Avenue and Fashion Place? It seems it was poorly designed from the start, going from two lanes to one and then back to two. Now with all the fast food places there and the center lane paint nearly gone it's dangerous. Now with the proposed expansion that’s going to be built, it will only get worse. Do you know if plans are in the works to make it two lanes all the way through to the East Hills Mall?
Thank You.
— Harvey Boyles

A: According to the city of Bakersfield the section of Mall View Road that runs through the shops and restaurants between Mount Vernon Avenue and Fashion Place is privately owned and maintained.
The developers are the ones that proposed the alignment, said planners Jim Eggert and Marc Gauthier.
A city traffic engineer looked at the route to see how it would impact city streets.
