Sport or murder? - Bakosphere - bakosphere's Blog - Bakersfield.com

This photo appeared in our Sports section today. It shows a Bakersfield woman and her family with a deer they had hunted and killed.
As far as hunting photos go, it's not that out of the ordinary.
A caller to the newsroom a few moments ago wasn't the slightest bit impressed by the "disturbing" photo.
"It's actually quite disgusting that this family is smiling together after slaughtering a deer," she said. "It's clearly a disturbing photo that should never have been published in your newspaper."
Is she right?

I can see where some might find this offensive... they would probably find pictures of the chicken they ate for dinner... or the pig they ate for breakfast... or the cow they ordered at the "drive-thru" window getting slaughtered offensive as well... I guess it's disgusting when you actually see the animal itself.. and not the Styrofoam and plastic... or the pretty colored cardboard chicken nugget box.

Tell the caller that the family was hunting catch-and-release. They shot the deer with a tranquilizer dart.

If they plan to eat it, then I have no problem with it. I don't mind those that hunt for food since there is little waste in the process and I know many enjoy venison (I haven't tried it since I have allergies to other red meats). I have less tolerance for trophy hunters however. I don't see much sport in that and the waste of a perfectly good source of food also irks me.

What do you think people had to do prior to processed food. What do you think goes on in those processing plants.

all avid hunters I know eat what they shoot. Crazy what people have a problem with these days. I think people really should pull their heads out of the sand and look around, think about real events and then ponder a second before they speak.

In the 70's & 80's my hubby went deer hunting every year with his cousin. We have neighbors who still do. Having venison for a year saved us a ton of money at the grocery store. As mentioned above as long as the meat is for consumption I have no problem with the picture - in many cultures, including ours, this meat sustained families who had little or no money. Nobody seems to have a fit about the whales and seals that are consumed by the peoples of the Arctic regions so what's the big deal about the deer - it's not bambi!

Anybody have any funny hunting stories?!
