Let's not bite the hand that feeds us. Not everybody over there thumbs their noses at Bakersfield. Mike and Amanda, the hosts of Bakersfield and Beyond hold Bakersfield in high esteeem, and that's an understatement. Marin County holds some of the biggest and most enthusiastic fans and supporters of the Bakersfield sound in the state, yes, even in the nation.

Mike and Amanda are humble enough to involve me, a lowly Bakersfield resident singer/songwriter, to be a regular guest ( a correspondent of sorts) on their show, Bakersfield and Beyond, and they've added me to their playlist, quite an impressive list that reflects their deep appreciation for the Bakerfield sound and the nu bako sound grounded in that early music. The playlist also includes Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Kim McAbee, Fatt Katt and the Vonzippers, The Witchitas and many others with roots in the Bakersfield sound.

Marin country...the most LIBERAL county in the state, has an overabundance of H2's? from the legislation handed down from the elected officials from that area, one would think they are all hippy environmentalists who wish the human race disappear from the earth.

There's that word again..hate. Do any of you know anyone who actually hates Fresno? I mean, we all know we don't like traffic or crime but what is it about Fresno that Bakersfield folks don't like?

I'm thinking this is more of a rivalry between two towns of a size. It sounds like people are talking about BHS/EB rivalry from the old days.

We'll know when Bako has come of age when we no longer obsess over every one else's nose-thumbing at us. I lived in the environs of Chicago for a large chunk of my life, and I can tell you that there are some, but not very many, people who still get ticked off at being called "Second City" - when that is supposed to mean "second to NYC", which is historically inaccurate, but the subject for another post.

The point is, most Chicagoans say, "Second City, Hell yeah!!" and pump a fist in the air.

You know Yankee Doodle Dandy was a British put-down of the colonial soldiers don't you? The colonials took the name on, and said, "Yeah, and these Yankee Doodles are kicking British butt!!".

Take the negatives and make it your positive. Stop wringing your hands over it and begging them to stop. It don't work.

Nancy, "hate on" is slang for having a rivalry or saying disparaging remarks, often times implying jealousy as a motive. It's not out-and-out hate, just happens to reuse that word in the saying. So I read JF's remarks as wondering why there's a rivalry when the cities are so similar.

While I was living in Fresno, I would hear people remark about how "country" or "dirty" Bakersfield was. I have heard Bakersfield folks make the same remarks about Fresno. The cities have similar issues and both have "dirty" and "country" aprts to them.
