I just don't understand why trying to get all Americans covered with universal health care is so alarming to some people. All the other major industrial nations have it. Almost one of every five dollars goes to the health care machine right now. Countries like Canada, France and Japan spend almost half as much as we do on health care and cover everyone. Those countries all have average life expectancy rates above what we have here in America, and those countries also have lower infant mortality rates. Bureaucrats from the insurance industry dictate what medical treatment you get today, not your primary care physician. In many cases you cannot go out of program for specialists that might be better than what your plan provides for.

What are these people protesting? What has the private sector done for them? You cannot even find a doctor to talk to unless you have insurance, or want to wait a week in an ER.

And, also, are these people so ignorant that they believe the government owns Fox, Disney, TimeWarner, Viacom and General Electric? Do they hate PBS, NPR and C-SPAN? Talk about the lunatic fringe!

Let's see here...the last estimate for nationalized health care costs are 3.47 TRILLION dollars, not MILLION! Canada has this coverage. LOTS and LOTS of Canadians are coming here for health coverage. Why?? Because health care is rationed, and the wait time is excessive for basic services. You think you pay a lot of taxes now? Just wait, you WILL be paying and paying more!

Ask some Britons also what they think of their nationalized health care also. Can we afford this right now? With our economy broke..?

Speaking of broke, NPR has one of the lowest ratings for "public radio", let's save some more money and [edit.] it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like other than cost, the main argument against a govt health care plan is that some people don't want government bureaucrats making medical decisions for them. What I don't understand is why those same people are 100% OK to let their insurance company bureaucrats make those same decisions.

I really liked what I heard from Obama last night. Especially about changing the incentives for doctors. It's vital to our health to make it so doctors make more money by keeping patients healthy rather than sick.

Why I'm against Government-Run Health Care...

Currently, even illegal aliens can walk into any emergency room in the United States and get some of the best medical care available in the world. If they cannot pay, government assistance programs kick in (Medical, Medicare etc.) The patient ends up with the best medical care possible. Those who can pay (insurance, etc) pay, those who cannot get assistance.

If we end up with government-provided-regulated health care, many physicians will simply get out of the business. There will be absolutely NO incentive to undertake many years of training and put up with the demands of internship and residency for a questionable return on their sizable investment (the average physician is over $750,000 in debt before he even sees his first patient). Those who do actually undertake the training will not be of the same caliber.

Some say Government-Run Health Care will eliminate the two-tiered system we have now...

As for eliminating the two-tiered system of medical care (the haves and have-nots) it will do nothing. A person needing a gall bladder removed will have to wait until some far-removed government clerk approves the operation and the millionaire will just pay the doctor in cash under the table or travel to a country where it can be done immediately.

As a retired Paramedic, I have had many conversations with physicians who have actually practiced medicine in countries where there is government provided medical care. Not one single physician thought government provided medicine was superior to the current system in the United States. Not one.

Instead, I heard stories of patients in dire need who could not be helped simply because a government clerk somewhere would not authorize the expenditure of funds to treat the patient and those who had the financial means simply paid for it out of pocket -or- traveled to the United States.

Ever wonder why so many physicians come to the United States from other countries? It's because we already have the best medical care in the world.

Why in Gods name would anyone want to screw-up a system that works better than anything else in the world? (Aside from having the name Obama or Ted Kennedy on the lesiglation) I can't fathom why any politician would ever vote for it.

Oh, yeah, I forgot... The politicians won't have to utilize the same medical care system the rest of do, they have the top-tier coverage courtesy of the (ungrateful) peons.

Curt, you didn't watch last night did you. Obama specifically answered your concerns on how to get more primary care physicians.

You're joking right? Oh, you must actually have health care. I don't, and absolutely can't afford it. I'll take England's system over ours any day. It costs nothing to see a doctor. They have no billing system.

No I didn't watch it. Far too busy the past week to catch much TV. Having said that, my observations are just that: My observations.

For generic, non-emergency care, there are public clinics currently available to those who cannot afford coverage. While they aren't very much fun (long wait, crowded facility etc) they ARE available and payment is based upon ability to pay. In fact, in past years, I volunteered in several of these public health clinics.

For EMERGENCY care, all you need to do is walk into ANY hospital emergency room and you WILL receive care. You will receive this care regardless of your ability to pay. In areas like Bakersfield, if your medical situation is stable, you might be asked to go to KMC but that will not occur unless you are medically stable.

In a fully government-run medical care system, every visit to a government clinic will resemble KMC on a bad day. You will have a LONG wait and may or may not receive treatment.

There is somehow a kind of great expectation that a government-run medical care system will re-route patients from the clinics we currently have to physicians offices - and to some small degree that MAY happen. However, there is a far greater chance the public health clinics role will be expanded to cover their new-found role in providing (degraded) health care to EVERYONE. Everyone EXCEPT politicians that is!

The devil is in the details and the details are going to spell out how badly the American citizen is going to get screwed.

In the past two decades, I have seen NOTHING - NOTHING WHATSOEVER from our politicians that would inspire me to trust them. A speech by B.H. Obama is no exception. He is long on rhetoric and photo ops and short on details (remember the bail-out bill that was passed without anyone reading it beforehand?).

ANYONE who would trust government to "fix" something - ANYTHING is an absolute fool.

Well Curt, if you watched last night you would have gotten plenty of details. He covered many of your concerns. One of his main points is that if we put more focus on preventative medicine, we can save lots of money on emergency procedures later on. One example was diabetics that don't get proper treatment and end up needing a foot amputated when it could have been prevented and cost less.

Get a major medical problem like cancer in a country with socialized medicine & you will see why the progam is not so hot. I have reletives in canada & they will tell you it's great for the basic stuff like stitches, common sickness, simple fractures, basic ER outpataint stuff, if it is more serious your in trouble.
