Here are the top movies in each category:

Fantasy: Wizard of Oz
Gangster: The Godfather
Science Fiction: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Western: The Searchers
Sports: Raging Bull
Mystery: Vertigo
Romantic Comedy: City Lights

Here is the other movies in each category! That link will take you to AFI's website!
What do you think of all these movies? Are there any movies that you think should have been in the top 10 and weren't? Or did you hate any of these movies? Most of these movies are older, are there any newer ones that have been overlooked?

Remember the Titans would be in my Top 10 Sports movies as would For the Love Of The Game.

I also didn't agree with a lot of the romantic comedies, loved watching the show last night, but thought there were a lot of good movies left off, a few old ones that I thought were over-rated.

I couldn't believe The Natural did not even make the top ten for the sports category. Apparently, some category definitions have also changed recently to put some of the movies mentioned into them to inspire catalog sales. Curious list of movies.

Jun 18, 2008 at 07:06 PM : I have to disagree...

I have to disagree with their choice for animation. While Snow White is timeless and the animation was cutting edge for it's time, they didn't sell the story well. And, the palette of the movie leaves something to be desired. Personally, and I know there will be opposition, I think the best animated movie was the Little Mermaid. After thirty years of screwin' around with live action movies (like, Freaky Friday, Candleshoe, Parent Trap, Zorro, etc.,.), they went back to what Disney does best: animated classic fables and tales. The film had more advanced animation effects (without computers) since Fantasia. It was also done in almost all water color pastels by one of the best - Kay Neilson. This movie brought back the genre of animated films. Add the score by Alan Menken and you've got gold.
