Little bit o' Berkeley - Go Mobile - mobile's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Go Mobile took our message on the road Sunday to share our innovations with a group of journalists from around the world at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. To get their feet wet as mobile photographers — or as we like to call you, MoPhos — we challenged the journalists to take photos around Berkeley during this week and text them to us to post on this blog. Check back to see what they send in!
As for you MoPhos in Bakersfield — let's give our Berkeley cohorts a taste of our town! Text us your photos around Bakersfield to mobile@bakersfield.com and we'll post them to this blog. Call it a Sister City MoPho Project. What can Bakersfield and Berkeley teach each other?

May 20, 2008 at 09:05 PM : Cool stuff, Jennifer....

Cool stuff, Jennifer. While you were at UC Berkeley, did you (or any of your colleagues) get a chance to observe what the journalism program itself was like? Because I know you were there for something else, but I'm curious. I was thinking about UC Berkeley's program, but I'm not sure what my future looks like right now, so I may stay in town for a long while. If all goes as planned, I plan to start working for The Rip this fall, and after a full year at The Rip I figure I'll have enough experience (maybe not.) to apply for an internship at The Californian, or at least the scholarship. Fun stuff. Maybe I'm crazy. Ah well.

May 21, 2008 at 09:05 AM : Hi Robin. I actually...

Hi Robin. I actually attended UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism from 2001-2003. After researching journalism graduate programs across the country, it was the only one I decide to apply for (thank god I got in!) because it is all practical, hands-on training. Very little theory. That is where I learned about new media, multimedia, and innovation in journalism in the digital age!

Unfortunately, Cal does not have an undergraduate journalism program. However, you don't have to major in journalism to be a journalist. For example, if you are interested in health reporting, you might go for a degree in public health with a minor in communications. Cal does have a daily campus paper, which you could participate in as a student activity.

The Renegade Rip at BC is a great place to start though. It wins several awards and Danny Edwards, the lead instructor, is a great mentor. As for state schools, I recommend San Jose State, San Francisco State and Sacramento State's journalism programs. I graduated from Sacramento State with a BA in journalism in 1998. The state capitol is a great place to study journalism, especially if you are into political reporting! Hope all this helps. If you have more questions, please feel free to e-mail me or call me: jbaldwin@bakersfield.com, 395-7568.
