This protracted contract "negotiation" with both the police and fire departments is just one more sad reminder of how far we have fallen in this state. From my jaundiced point of view, if people want public services like fire, law enforcement, roads, health and education they have to realize they need to pay for them. The tax options that were voted down last month were the last failed attempts to save the ship. The ship is going down. The obstinacy from conservatives over paying taxes to support our essential services borders on insanity.

If I were a conspiracy theorist I might conclude this is all part of a coordinated effort to break the last few remaining unions that matter, and break government services up to the point where all is privatized. Police and fire for a fee. Education for a fee. Prisons for a fee. Social services for a fee. All these fees will greatly increase the amount average citizens will be on the hook for if they want any of those essentials. The idea behind pooling dollars from everyone through progressive taxes is to keep the playing field in play. If all becomes privatized without a government sufficiently empowered life becomes untenable for most, and the ball to privatize seems to be rolling quickly these days.

"Blunder Boy" is over the top? Is he making a "blunder"? Yes. If he continues down this coarse will it be another one of many mistakes (blunders) that has cost the city tax-payer in court? Yes. Is it a mistake (blunder) that an immature, having a temper tantrum, "boy" would make? Yes. So is "blunder boy" truly over the top? Not even close......

Keep doing what you're doing, Lois. Your column is a breath of fresh air on this town's often smelly political scene. Scrivner did blunder. Publishing a very public opinion piece about sensitive contract negotiations while those negotiations are ongoing and you're a party to them is never a wise thing to do. Rescinding an existing good faith proposal in those negotiations ain't so hot either.

Our local reps, like Scrivner and Weir want to "blunderbuss" the unions because they view them as the enemy. If you will recall Weir's recall (no pun intended), he ranted about the unions bankrupting Vallejo as a justification for summarily kicking Russel Johnson off the Planning Commission. And, of course, we remember ZS's "blunderbuss" comment/aside thrown at Hanson after Harold didn't line up with the hardliners.
