Thoughts on the passing of a Bakersfield music icon, and a review of Slim the Drifter Trio's The Guilty Ten - Paperback Writer 2 - novelboy's Blog - Bakersfield.com

I reviewed Slim the Drifter Trio's album The Guilty Ten as promised. Leave a comment on my article if you have any memories of Slim you might want to share. He was legendary in the Bakersfield music scene performing country music, but starting off years ago in punk/hard rock...

If you get a chance, follow the links to his songs, Dancehall piano and Atlanta. Great music.

May 29, 2007 at 11:05 AM : Brad showed up at my...

Brad showed up at my house Saturday: "Slim's dead. " I grabbed four beers, one for Brad, Alex, myself, and Slim.We all had a White Hawk ale, . The one we opened for Slim was a Rogue Dead Guy ale.

It seemed fitting.

Brad and I both played with Slim in the Slim the Drifter Band. Brad continued with the Slim the Drifter Trio. Ten years ago Slim showed up at my door with an album's worth of new tunes. I booked studio time, gave him a guitar, and he recorded the whole Kurt and Courtney CD in one sitting.

Slim is the kind of person movies are made about. Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, Dylan THomas, my God, even Hemingway, and I have to mention Peter Will.

All geniuses. All notorious drinkers.

Slim walked the walk, talked the talk, lived the life, and he gave back all that he took and then some. He shared his house, booze, weed, and food with the lowest. Slim was never better than anyone, yet he lifted us up in the later years of his life through hi ssongwriting and dedication to the Muse.

He proved his worth in the last few years.

Everyone who played with Slim has a few chapters in the book of his life. Everyone who spoke to him in the last few months heard these words at the end of the converstation:

" I love you."

We love you to Slim.
