Some perspective is needed here. We often don't realize how lucky they are to be living here. I had a friend who went on a business trip to China for a week. Despite the fact he stayed in a urban city, there were a lot of things that were poor by American standards.

I am neither liberal or conservative because I don't like either extreme end of the political spectrum. I never hated Bush and I don't hate Obama either. Being a president is a tough job, regardless of their political affiliation.

That said, I will always love America for opportunities that my folks and I are able to pursue after.... which are hard to find anywhere else.

I love America for the oppurtunities it presents in relation to the rest of the world.

For a poor kid from a poor family, I've had more opportunities than I could envision if I were born in other parts of the world (to include industrialized nations). Colin Powell writes in his book how his life would have been different if his parents stayed in Jamaica or immigrated to UK. It was interesting insight into the possibilities for success in America.

I like Obama for the possibility of change, in foreign relations and health care in particular. For everything that is gret about America, it is by no means perfect.

I think hate is a really strong word. I don't think that any one side hates America. I think they have contempt for how the other side sees fit to steer where the country is going. I would certainly hope that anyone living here has love for this country. And I think that anyone willing to devote time to bringing about change or to help guide this country, regardless of the part affiliation would do so out of love of this country. Not because of some deep rooted feelings for the "other team".

I think a lot of people on these blogs use sterotyping to just garner a response. You know who you are.

If you haven't noticed, I'm a stickler for hypocracy. While we are all hypocritical on occasion, I respect those who freely admit to their hypocracy. I discourage and denounce those who point the finger, as the pot calls the kettle "black."

This is why I denounce Refi - for instead of stating it as you did, that both sides need to quit the childishness of bickering back and forth, "Why do you hate America?" - "No, why do you hate America?" instead Refi posts something that only further polarizes all of us.

In my opinion, the reason why healthcare, or any meaningful reform, will have difficuty passing is the presence of so much special interest cash in our nation's capitol. Both candidates spoke loudly at length of the need to curtail lobbying and special interest influence, but as usual, it was only lip service. The Tea Party movement, for all its warts and occaisional racism, is proof that there is growing frustration in this country about the impotence the average voter feels. We cannot control the system anymore, the system controls us. There are lobbying groups such as Common Cause that try to lobby for the public good, but they are drowned out by the narrow focus groups.

Lobbying is considered "free speech" and is protected by the Constitution, the very Constitution that these groups want to corrupt to serve their own selfish interests. But, we -the public - are given our diversions; sports, reality TV, lotteries, and the occaisional war, and think we are part of something.

It is a circus, my friends, so we might as well sit back and enjoy the clowns.

Which ones would those be? Are public schools an entitlement you disapprove of? Maybe it is the various school lunch programs you would like to see eliminated. Are Social Security and Medicare entitlements you would strip away from our senior citizens? I certainly have heard plenty of comments from conservatives not to mess with their Medicare or with their Social Security. These conservative people seem just as alarmed as liberals in the same age bracket over possible cuts to these programs.

Maybe public roads and highways are entitlements you would remove from the American landscape. Sell them to the highest bidders and pay tolls to use, or just have the roads closed by the private property owners who find the cost of repairs too high to maintain.

Does a program like First Five in California bother you? Where tax money from chump smokers goes to aid economically disadvantaged kids five and under with health coverage.

So, Casooner90, what entitlements are you talking about, and specifically who are you referring to in your statement that has this so-called mentality?

I would argue large corporations in energy, defense and agriculture get the lion's share of entitlements today, but those are called subsidies or tax breaks, or bond measures.

In this case, I didn't have time to do such a thing. Either way, my point was made, and as you admited, received, regardless of the minuscule details of wording that were incorrect.

I don't care what you did for a living - you could have been editor for the New York Times for all I know, and it would not matter. There is something called courtesy - try using it once in a while.
