It's hot. And there's nothing wrong with moaning about it - Sound Off - soundoff's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Reader: Must we again endure the annual stream of articles/columns in The Californian comparing Bakersfield’s hot summers to the depths of Hades? Every summer, people whine about Bako’s hot, dry weather and feign surprise at our first 100-degree day in May or June. (The chorus of crying and complaining must be deafening in places like Phoenix, Palm Springs and Las Vegas — all of which get much hotter than Bakersfield.)Many of us hearty types have grown to enjoy the pleasures of south San Joaquin summers: bright, cheery 70-degree mornings; hot, dry afternoons perfect for swimming pools, and trips to the chilly Kern River; and there’s no better place to get a suntan in America, thanks to Bako’s almost constant summer sunshine.Countless real-estate-refugees from the Coast have lamented to me how the summers here are so dreadful: “This is terrible — hot, sunny weather in the summertime!?! Whoever heard of such a thing!” Well, perhaps these “meteorological mopers” should retreat to a “softer, gentler” climate, such as Santa Barbara or Carmel. After all, Bakersfield summers aren’t for the faint-of-heart (or so I’m told).—Greg GordonManaging Editor Logan Molen: Greg, I’ve lived in the San Joaquin Valley since 1965 and in Bakersfield since 1988. I’m not a Johnny come lately.I don’t mind the summers. But it’s miserably hot. And it’s uncomfortable. And, yeah, I’m going to moan about it now. And so are many other people — newbies and longtimers alike — who otherwise enjoy living here. If complaining about the weather makes us “meteorogical mopers,” so be it.

We've been pretty, lucky weather wise for about a decade. The heat and fog have both been moderate. We're due.

When people ask me about the weather here, I say "Hey, our weather is just like San Diego weather, an average of about 70 degrees."

Then I tell them "Of course in San Diego that means it's 60 in the winter and 80 in the summer. Here it means it's 40 in the winter and 110 in the summer. But it still averages out to 70!"

It hit 101 in Santa Barbara (with terrible humidity) and I quickly realized there was one crucial misclaculation... homes on coast usuallty aren't equipped with air conditioning... i had to drive to my parents' air-conditioned home in Visalia just to get some relief (swelter..(profanity)...swelter)

I really hate summer but last year I went to Laughlin in July and it was 122 degrees. Figure THAT one out !!! Oh..I forgot, the casinos are always cool...maybe that's why it didn't bother me. In all honesty, we took a jet boat ride down the Colorado to Havisu in 121 heat. The boat people provided spray bottle to help cool us down but it was still HOT !!! We walked across the highway to the shopping mall and almost had a meltdown halfway across.

Anyone listen to the news last night? It was the hottest day in 70 years. They finally broke the record of heat I've seen in Bakersfield.
