Taxpayers fund Sanford affair

Earlier today, Mark Sanford told The State he went to Argentina about 18 months ago on a taxpayer-funded Commerce Department trip.

Sanford, in a brief interview in the nation's busiest airport, said he has been to the city twice before, most recently about a year and half ago during a Commerce Department trip.

So he had an affair with a woman from Argentina, and he recently visited there on the taxpayer dime.

According to Sanford's travel reports, he spent $21,488 on a trip to Brazil, Argentina, and China. However much of that can be allocated to his trip to Argentina, it still means taxpayers likely spent thousands on his affair.

Wow.

In addition, Ben Smith notes two taxpayer-funded trips to Argentina made by Sanford in the mid-1990s, though Sanford indicated he met the woman with whom he had the affair eight years ago.

After the break she came back and, while never admitting to screwing it up, reiterated that it was a kidnapping, but never said that it WASN'T a murder.

It's not that difficult--first of all is not to do it in the first place, of course. Lots of folks fail at that one.

But it remains true that it's almost never the crime, it's the coverup. "Hiking the Appalachian Trail?" Really? As cover for a trip out of the country with customs and passport records and the like?

Don't take a company car. Have your paramour come to you, if possible, rather than the reverse. Check in from time to time.

If you're away from work, make sure it's an excused absence. Hand over to the lite-gov if you *HAVE* to go out of country. A nice boring cover story about why you're in Argentina would help. At least check the weather so you don't go on about how hot it was in Buenos Aires.

Gary Hart teaches us another tip: Don't dare the press to follow you.

If you're coming back from an unexplained absence of several days, at least have the forethought to wear a prominent facial bandage and say "no comment" when asked about it. That's how McCain got away with *HIS* dalliances during the '08 campaign.
