There is truth in what both of you say.

On one hand, a house, if priced like an automobile or any other hard good, would be the sum of labor and materials plus a reasonable profit minus wear and tear and imminent repair expenses. A house does have a real value.

On the other hand, real estate prices have almost no connection to this real value at all. They are treated as equity investments, and are seen as a way to make money. My house had no more real value when it could have sold for $400,000 than has today at $200,000.

That, by the way, is what's wrong with how our society, for the most part, views home ownership. Homes are for living. Stocks (and I mean real investment in a company that you personally think will grow profitable, not the legalized gambling known as Wall Street) are for making money.

We didn't "ATM" when the "values" soared; long before then, we wrote our last mortgage payment and meant it.

There are a lot of houses selling for less money than it would cost if you built it yourself. If you did it yourself, your labor would be free. Since people who build houses need paid for what they do, what is a house "really" worth? You can't build yourself a traditional house for $35 per square foot. The materials cost more than that.

The lot has a value. All of the supplies and materials have a value too. If they have to be shipped in from other parts of the country, that cost money. The people working to build it need paid for their skills also.

Just because people can't afford a house doesn't mean that it's priced higher than its "real" value.

I think this is one step in the road to ruin for California. The way it has been looking to me, it's a chain reaction.

1 Government makes high taxes on Business, Industry and families to support really sweet social programs

2. Business and Industry leave the state for somewhere with lower taxes and the higher paying jobs go with them.

3. People with those higher paying jobs are now unemployed and collecting unemployment.

4. With Business and Industry not here to pay taxes, and those formerly higher paid people unemployed and not paying taxes, the total amount of tax money goes down.

5. With less tax money coming in to support those sweet social programs, the state runs out of money.

6. When the state runs out of money, they raise taxes instead of cutting back on the sweetness of the social programs.

7. The cycle starts all over again. Each time the cycle restarts, our hole becomes deeper and deeper.

I've been watching things all my life and this cycle of things is what I've noticed over and over again. We've been slowly losing ground since the late 1950's.

They won't even answer any of the questions about whether or not they're prostitutes. For all we know they both could be citizens of Trinidad/Tobago, and not actual, real Americans. Has anyone seen either of their birth certificates? We just don't know. There are a lot of questions about their shady pasts. Hey, I've even seen screen caps of one of them doing a "solo scene" that's totally NSFW. Would a prostitute do something like that in front of a camera? I'll let you be the judge of that.

The unions (and regulations, and mandates, and blah blah blah) are holding this state hostage. The deals the CTA has negotiated are not sustainable, not by a long shot, not ever.

I regret that I used coarse language in my comment; my internal edit function was disabled yesterday after dealing with a - yes, you guessed it - retired teacher. My intent was to come back here to clarify my comment last night, but life happens.

Back to the topic, I don't get people who want their kids learning in a bubble-wrapped environment and expect someone else to pay when they get hurt. I broke a finger on the playground in the the third grade, my best friend fell off the monkey bars and sustained injuries that required an ambulance; our parents didn't sue for anything, even medical expenses.

Sadly, though, the district will likely settle, establishing yet another precedent.

The California Legislature, which now polls at a 15% approval rating, doesn't care about solvency, jobs, businesses, standard of living or public approval. They only care about getting reelected and maintaining power. Wow, Sam, did this ever bring back some memories. Not quite the same experiences in church, although I have attended those churches where, when the Spirit moved people, they began to talk in frenzied "tongues." As a young girl, one of my best friends attended one of these churches, and I visited her church when staying over with her. I began to wonder if my own church might be missing something. My dad set me as straight as he could -- after all, I was a daughter with my own inquiring mind -- by telling me that according to the Scripture, speaking in tongues was all right but that it edified only the speaker. No one else could understand and thereby be edified. I thought about that and decided he was probably right.

The story of the gun going off in the house also reminded me of a person in my family who said that "When it rained, Mama couldn't cook." I asked "Whaddaya mean, when it rains, Mama can't cook"? Well, it seems that his dad was one of the local drunks who, on occasion when it rained, took delight in shooting at the ceiling, meaning there were holes in the roof. Never fixed, of course. And when it rained, every pot and pan in the house was used to catch rain. So Mama couldn't cook.

I've been in that house. It had a tin roof. But never was I there when it rained. I've been in other houses with tin roofs, though. What a sound when it rained!

To make it better he should go out to the nearest vehicle and try to read the minuscule print concerning the correct PSI. It is the smallest print in the world [ maybe ]. He needs to coerce the tire manufacturers into making the PSI labeling about 1/2" high. Way off topic but I thought this might be something he could accomplish.

Funny, for a "research scientist" there sure wasn't a whole lot of research in there. Or facts.

Obama will never be as much of a failure as George W Bush was. He caused so much damage to our economy and world standing that it will take years if not decades to repair all of the harm he's inflicted on America. Obama has made a pretty decent start despite some of the members of his own party in Congress.

I had no idea that the "Huh" was directed at me. I normally cook 6 to 8 turkeys a year... cooking turkeys is absolutely no sweat to me. We have a division of labor here, I cook the meat, the spouse cooks the vegetables and anything else healthy we need. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter are not supposed to be a major stress on anyone. Clean-up is best done as we go and is shared. (I have offered to use the power washer on the pots and pans, but thus far the offer has been declined).

The only time my spouse has complained was when I was taking cooking lessons for Chinese food and cooked a 6 course dinner... every pot and pan and plate in the house was dirty... we compromised on one dish at a time unless there was company.

Everyone, I guess, has to work out compromises. But I really hate it when women think they are the only ones that can cook. And I really hate it when peeps take on roles they are not suited for because their mother or father did it that way.

Oh and Thanksgiving dinner will be for three... nearly none cooked by me... but it will be turkey breast, corn bread dressing, gravy (cooked by me), a Lutheran green bean casserole, glazed yams, and rolls.
