I wish more people would think like you. Investment property isn't where you live. Investment property is what you own and let other people use..........for a fee.

It made me sad when I saw people gambling with the place they live. I told some of them that those high prices would go back down. I've seen it happen before.

Great information Adam, thanks for the post

Unfortunately, many underwater homes here in bako were made that way by the owners using their HELOCS like a freekin atm card.

and we wonder why people are sue-happy, and there is NO SHAME in taking money from the Government, with nothing expected in return

There is truth in what both of you say.

On one hand, a house, if priced like an automobile or any other hard good, would be the sum of labor and materials plus a reasonable profit minus wear and tear and imminent repair expenses. A house does have a real value.

On the other hand, real estate prices have almost no connection to this real value at all. They are treated as equity investments, and are seen as a way to make money. My house had no more real value when it could have sold for $400,000 than has today at $200,000.

That, by the way, is what's wrong with how our society, for the most part, views home ownership. Homes are for living. Stocks (and I mean real investment in a company that you personally think will grow profitable, not the legalized gambling known as Wall Street) are for making money.

We didn't "ATM" when the "values" soared; long before then, we wrote our last mortgage payment and meant it.

There are a lot of houses selling for less money than it would cost if you built it yourself. If you did it yourself, your labor would be free. Since people who build houses need paid for what they do, what is a house "really" worth? You can't build yourself a traditional house for $35 per square foot. The materials cost more than that.

The lot has a value. All of the supplies and materials have a value too. If they have to be shipped in from other parts of the country, that cost money. The people working to build it need paid for their skills also.

Just because people can't afford a house doesn't mean that it's priced higher than its "real" value.

I think this is one step in the road to ruin for California. The way it has been looking to me, it's a chain reaction.

1 Government makes high taxes on Business, Industry and families to support really sweet social programs

2. Business and Industry leave the state for somewhere with lower taxes and the higher paying jobs go with them.

3. People with those higher paying jobs are now unemployed and collecting unemployment.

4. With Business and Industry not here to pay taxes, and those formerly higher paid people unemployed and not paying taxes, the total amount of tax money goes down.

5. With less tax money coming in to support those sweet social programs, the state runs out of money.

6. When the state runs out of money, they raise taxes instead of cutting back on the sweetness of the social programs.

7. The cycle starts all over again. Each time the cycle restarts, our hole becomes deeper and deeper.

I've been watching things all my life and this cycle of things is what I've noticed over and over again. We've been slowly losing ground since the late 1950's.

patrick Sioux-saying that anyone in their right mind would purposely get laid off is assanine!

woah patty..did i strike a nerve..i wouldnt have said it if it werent a fact..you not wanting to realize that its true is assinine..he intentionally made management mad because he didnt like his jpb so they eventually had enough of his crap and ran him off..just happened 2 months ago..he told my niece and I he was goling to do it 3 weeks before it happened...and he was going to draw unemployment (suck off the system as he put it) and do cash side jobs for as long as he could..and Im *POSITIVE* there are thousands more just like him out there!!

there are jobs out there you just have to be willing to take them..we raised a gril shes 18 with no prior work experience and she got hired for the christmas rush..all ya gotta do is get off your lazy butt and go find a job..if not in california then another state or country for that matter..too many cry babys like your self would rather sit around complaining than improve their situation..your gonna have to do it so you might as well start now..gravy trains over..

it might be less then what you had before but longer hours for less pay can equal a decent paycheck..i know like many others on this board Ive been there..you do things like that to support a family..its called growing up!

As Obama's approval ratings wither, the truth of the failure of his policies will get more traction. Many in the media are still in love, and are continually stimulated, whenever he shows his face or when they hear his voice. But the people are enraged - and soon the hammer will fall.

Well, neither of them have done anything to prove that they aren't prostitutes. How are we supposed to know??? Not that I think they are prostitues or anything, but people are asking questions about some of their activities. I'm just sayin'

They won't even answer any of the questions about whether or not they're prostitutes. For all we know they both could be citizens of Trinidad/Tobago, and not actual, real Americans. Has anyone seen either of their birth certificates? We just don't know. There are a lot of questions about their shady pasts. Hey, I've even seen screen caps of one of them doing a "solo scene" that's totally NSFW. Would a prostitute do something like that in front of a camera? I'll let you be the judge of that.

Hey, I'm not trying to insult anybody. There are just a lot of questions about these 2 women and the shady characters that they surround themselves with. We really need to take a look at the ones that went to fancy colleges. I think some of them might have written papers about fascists.

I have to wonder whether or not the right wing is sincere about their principals when they promote such illigitimate, scandalous, violent extremists that hide behind a pretty face. OK, that chick that I saw in the awesome pictures wasn't being violent, but Who knows what she was doing after the camera stopped rolling. We just don't know.

And, Djembe, your new hero, Rep.
The Grade : "Parents ask district for $19,000 after monkey bar fall"

Dirtyshirt and Learnem, my comment about the CTA was an off-topic one sentence rant that was inspired by reading the news about California's budget woes yesterday. The unions (and regulations, and mandates, and blah blah blah) are holding this state hostage. The deals the CTA has negotiated are not sustainable, not by a long shot, not ever.

I regret that I used coarse language in my comment; my internal edit function was disabled yesterday after dealing with a - yes, you guessed it - retired teacher. My intent was to come back here to clarify my comment last night, but life happens.

Back to the topic, I don't get people who want their kids learning in a bubble-wrapped environment and expect someone else to pay when they get hurt. I broke a finger on the playground in the the third grade, my best friend fell off the monkey bars and sustained injuries that required an ambulance; our parents didn't sue for anything, even medical expenses.

Sadly, though, the district will likely settle, establishing yet another precedent.

"On Tuesday’s Countdown show, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann spewed bile at conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, accusing her of possessing "fascistic hatred," and comparing her to a "mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it." "

I guess it's a matter of degree when it comes to insults...and who's doing the insulting. I didn't hear a word of rebuke from the left.

But I believe that we need two strong, viable parties in this country to make our political system work properly.

These people are certifiably nuts! They live in some ultra conservative utopia where everything can be privately funded and we can have public safety, infrastructure, and education and not have to PAY A SINGLE CENT FOR IT!! They're MAD AS HELL that they may not be the DIRECT beneficiary of those tax dollars spent. Wow! My money is helping someone else somewhere else! What a crime! How do you fix an ailing institution? Starve it to death! For a bunch of right wingers that most identify themselves as Christians, they sure endorse practices that appear Darwinistic. Christ directed us to give to Cesar's what is Cesar's. Oh, oh! Nobody tell those tea baggers that they may not be on solid scriptural ground!

You people don't get it! It's not about laziness, its about the fact that there are no jobs! Sioux-saying that anyone in their right mind would purposely get laid off is assanine! UIB pays only 60% of your gross AND you lose any benefits you are receiving. I'm not saying that there isn't abuse, however abuse is the exception rather than the rule and not even close to a legitamate reason our UIB fund is running in the red! If you want to blame anyone blame the financial sector for CAUSING this job loss. Companies didn't just, out of the blue decide that they would lay people off and/or freeze hiring. The greed of the financial sector under BUSH is what caused massive job loss. Let them suppliment CA's fund with all those bailout dollars they received for scr#wing hard working Americans. There are Californians out there fighting and scrapping for non existant jobs; following deceiving leads only to be told 'not hiring at this time'. You all say 'they should take what they can get'. Horse$h#t!! Going from working a livining wage to flipping burgers is not an option! A head of household that takes such a job will continue to have to depend on aid to support his/her family. Oh, well! I guess they should have seen it coming right?

Damn you are lazy, no wonder you are so misinformed. Who cares If I "pasted" the articles? How does that take away from the validity of the information?

The California Legislature, which now polls at a 15% approval rating, doesn't care about solvency, jobs, businesses, standard of living or public approval. They only care about getting reelected and maintaining power. The liberal Democrats, who have been in control for 10 years, want our state to mirror Vermont in all areas and are willing to force their agenda upon us as long as we allow them to.

It's time for a major public revolt against the Sacramento establishment and the state employee cabal.

And thank you Alicen; I've known a couple like the guy shooting holes in their roofs. As to "tongues" the Scripture has it there must be an interpreter or keep quiet. God may well have given some the ability to speak in foreign languages as per the story of Pentecost, but I doubt God is into gibberish. It was fun watching and listening while a kid, but for my part and as I have witnessed it in churches it is either "theater," an attempt to get personal attention, or hysterical "enthusiasm.

Wow, Sam, did this ever bring back some memories. Not quite the same experiences in church, although I have attended those churches where, when the Spirit moved people, they began to talk in frenzied "tongues." As a young girl, one of my best friends attended one of these churches, and I visited her church when staying over with her. I began to wonder if my own church might be missing something. My dad set me as straight as he could -- after all, I was a daughter with my own inquiring mind -- by telling me that according to the Scripture, speaking in tongues was all right but that it edified only the speaker. No one else could understand and thereby be edified. I thought about that and decided he was probably right.

The story of the gun going off in the house also reminded me of a person in my family who said that "When it rained, Mama couldn't cook." I asked "Whaddaya mean, when it rains, Mama can't cook"? Well, it seems that his dad was one of the local drunks who, on occasion when it rained, took delight in shooting at the ceiling, meaning there were holes in the roof. Never fixed, of course. And when it rained, every pot and pan in the house was used to catch rain. So Mama couldn't cook.

I've been in that house. It had a tin roof. But never was I there when it rained. I've been in other houses with tin roofs, though. What a sound when it rained!

Thanks for the memories.

The foreign press isn't in the tank like the US press. Der Spiegel has some interesting things about this failure of a trip.

In Tokyo, the new center-left government even pulled out of its participation in a mission which saw the Japanese navy refueling US warships in the Indian Ocean as part of the Afghanistan campaign. FAIL. In Beijing, Obama failed to achieve any important concessions whatsoever. There will be no binding commitments from China to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. FAIL. A revaluation of the Chinese currency, which is kept artificially weak, has been postponed. FAIL. Sanctions against Iran? Not a chance. FAIL. Nuclear disarmament? Not an issue for the Chinese. FAIL.

The White House did not even stand up for itself when it came to the question of human rights in China. The president, who had said only a few days earlier that freedom of expression is a universal right, was coerced into attending a joint press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao, at which questions were forbidden. Former US President George W. Bush had always managed to avoid such press conferences.

I wrote my first letter to BO the other day. I told him I thought his tire air pressure comment was actually a good idea. To make it better he should go out to the nearest vehicle and try to read the minuscule print concerning the correct PSI. It is the smallest print in the world [ maybe ]. He needs to coerce the tire manufacturers into making the PSI labeling about 1/2" high. Way off topic but I thought this might be something he could accomplish.

Funny, for a "research scientist" there sure wasn't a whole lot of research in there. Or facts.

Obama will never be as much of a failure as George W Bush was. He caused so much damage to our economy and world standing that it will take years if not decades to repair all of the harm he's inflicted on America. Obama has made a pretty decent start despite some of the members of his own party in Congress.

Bakersfield Boomers : "36 coming for Thanksgiving and I'm sick! So what are your Thanksgiving Day Plans?"

I had no idea that the "Huh" was directed at me. I normally cook 6 to 8 turkeys a year... cooking turkeys is absolutely no sweat to me. We have a division of labor here, I cook the meat, the spouse cooks the vegetables and anything else healthy we need. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter are not supposed to be a major stress on anyone. Clean-up is best done as we go and is shared. (I have offered to use the power washer on the pots and pans, but thus far the offer has been declined).

The only time my spouse has complained was when I was taking cooking lessons for Chinese food and cooked a 6 course dinner... every pot and pan and plate in the house was dirty... we compromised on one dish at a time unless there was company.

Everyone, I guess, has to work out compromises. But I really hate it when women think they are the only ones that can cook. And I really hate it when peeps take on roles they are not suited for because their mother or father did it that way.

Oh and Thanksgiving dinner will be for three... nearly none cooked by me... but it will be turkey breast, corn bread dressing, gravy (cooked by me), a Lutheran green bean casserole, glazed yams, and rolls.
