Breaking News : "Fire destroys Oildale home"

Too sad. What can we do to help the fire victims? The last time I tried to contact the Red Cross I got disconnected and bad phone numbers. I asked a person that volunteered for the RC and she said to give it to the Salvation Army and they would help. So I called and tried to give them my less than 2 year old living room couches, chair and love seat, ottomans. They came out and saw one little seam tear about 1/4 inch long and told me that they could not accept it. It had to be in perfect condition. What a joke. I even cleaned the pieces. . I had all new pillow inserts. They told me that nobody would buy it. Not only that, I had slip covers for all the furniture. I gave it to some people that drove by and they were thrilled to have it.

The Salvation Army is looking to make a profit, not to help others.

VanityFair - this is TeacherCate again - not the hubby. I kept trying to bring my comments back to what the original question was. It is a valid question regarding the lack of education, resources and services available to breastfeeding moms in Kern County as evidence by the vehement ignorance in regard to the benefits of breastfeeding.

As a father, as an educator in Early Childhood Education, and someone who has worked in the field for several years, I feel I have some information to share.

Breastfeeding is the best thing for your child. In terms of brain development, development of attachment, and physical development it IS the best thing for your child. (again this is assuming that there are no medical reasons not to breastfeed your baby).

Now to the real question. Breastfeeding is hard and it takes practice and work. If you are exhausted, scared, not supported, then yes you are going to take the route that is easist and will produce results right away and not stick with the work that is hard. The next part is that we as a society have to get over seeing the breast as something that is sexual. Yes they are fun to play with but we have to remember what their primary function is to feed children. I, for one, support all mothers who breastfeed their children if it is in public or private. But what I challange you all to do is to not look at women as only sexual creatures and start looking at women for the many roles they play/have in our society. Any one who has had me as an instructor would know this argument and would have to had to already think about this as I make it a point to bring up the topic of breastfeeding in my classes.

As for the political comments......please keep in mind that it was within the last 8 years that a statue of Lady Liberty was removed from the White House because she had bare breasts. And we do NOT live in a democratic society. We live in a representive society. We do not get to vote on every issue. We vote someone in to office and they get to vote however they want to until the next election when we have the choice to put the sameperson back in office or someone else.

While I might not have 'fed' my children during their infancy, I developed a strong attachment with all of my children. I just didn't get to shove a bottle in their mouth I formed my attachment with my children without the use of food.

Neither of them offered me a choice. Fortunately for family harmony my number was in the high 200s and I was safe. The kid down the block wasn't so lucky. His number was around 10. He went to Viet Nam was was killed in action the following year.

If you watched the Michael Vick case on Animal Planet only 2 dogs had to be euthanized. One because it had a disease and the other because it was fought too much and could not be rehabilitated. A person from San Francisco that had a rescue took several of the dogs and worked with them and found them loving homes. Micheal Vick lost a 75 million dollar contract and filed bankruptcy shortly after that. It was a hard show to watch but the outcome was worth it.

I shop at the Grocery Outlet all the time. The employees are polite, friendly and helpful. There was a teen trying to collect donations outside when I went there a couple of weeks ago. The temperature was over 100, and he was suffering. They invited him in to sit under the fan for a while, gave him water and let him use the bathroom. Most stores wouldn't do that.

I have the utmost respect for the employees of Grocery Outlet. I live a few blocks away from there and I am in there several times a week. There are a lot of children that come into the store as they sell candy bars at 4 for $1. I was in there the other day and a kid asked how much the cookies were. The clerk answered that they were 25 cents. The kid went back and bought more. Now that is a smart kid that knows what a bargain is. A lot of the children that shop there are from the Pinon Springs area off of Ming. I am not bashing that area but they are on a limited budget. The employees have done their best to keep the want-to-be gang bangers out of there. In fact, one day I was in the store and these kids were in the store shoplifting. The oldest wannabe was sending the younger kids in to do his dirty work. The employee mentioned that it was getting to be a real problem. I got in my car and chased and confronted them. Much to the discouragement of the employees. Got them!!!

Another time I was in there a kid of about 11 or 12 was buying pool toys, water guns. He had $40 to spend and I asked him if he earned the money and he said yes. He was ecstatic that he could buy the toys at that price. In fact, he asked me if I knew how much they cost at other stores. Great kid. Great store. They are teaching values at the store. It is similar to a family restaurant only it is a grocery store. Would that man walk into Chuckee Cheese or John's Incredible with that shirt?????

The owner is one of my best friends and I worked with him before he became the owner. You couldn't ask for a better person to know. If it was over a shirt, then I'd say the shirt should stay at home. As for for your husband, he should grow up and live in the real world. Face it, he wears the shirt to strike a spark and he got one. He should dress like a man and not as a child. Would he have wore the shirt into the court room? Wear something like that in my store and I'd show him the door.

The owners not hard to pick out, his family's picture is above the office window and he's there most of the time. You can expect him to agree with me to leave the shirt at home and grow up.

I think those of us that have the means should get involved. If we don't have the means we can resort to other ways to make money for the shelters. I am doing a recycling program for the animals. The shelters rely on donations from the community. There is not a lot of money in Bakersfield but we can get resourceful. I watch Animal Planet and they do have communities that are no kill shelters. They take in animals that are abused ,under the law or, if the owner cannot afford it they take them if they get a signed relinquishment. I know all this cost money but, somehow I know the community of Bakersfield can do this. One of the most important things we can do is educate the public. Lets start with the kids. Go to the schools and teach them responsible pet ownership. Play some videos of Pitts fighting and cock fights. Ask them how they would feel if they were their pets. Also teach them that animals do have feelings just like we do. Education, education, education.

Back to Emily's question, I expected to, and did, breastfeed my babies. Really, the thought never crossed my mind to consider formula as my sisters already had five babies between the two of them and they nursed. Most of my friends, whether at-home moms or those who chose to work breastfed as well, using a pump if necessary. It just seemed completely natural to me.

It wasn't always easy, and I was the modest type who would go to the car, leave the room, not go out, etc. to nurse because I didn't want the negative feedback. I thought my in-laws were going to collapse when they learned I was breastfeeding at all. In fact, I once excused myself to go to the bedroom to feed the baby and they actually LEFT because they were offended.

Here's what I saw. And here are my conclusions about what I witnessed.

Hippies were stupid, self centered children who were given the world as an oyster and still weren't happy. The soldiers (even those that were drafted) symbolized "the establishment" to them. Therefore the soldiers were a substitute for their real target, the US government.

Almost everyone made the soldiers a target.

That's why we're all so careful to say we "support the troops" when we criticize the War in Iraq. America never wants to make the soldiers a scapegoat again.

I can only afford programs for conversion ratio's and weight gain that I can deduct on Sch F, I cannot afford the more popular programs you mention. I could not legally deduct them as they have no bearing directly on my business. Perhaps I will create a co. I can do deducts as Sch C expenses and thus deduct the Photoshop. For now I utilize freeware at which people like yourself scoff......

Think about this like a true Hispanic. If you really envision the "pie" as a finite entity, then the Hispanics will be fighting the blacks for a slice of the pie. "white" people will not suffer. Hispanics will (under a Barry POTUS).

As Apollo mentioned, many religious groups are denied their freedom of religion to solemnize legal gay weddings. The Unitarian Universalists, the Unity Church locally, The Wesley Methodists, many United Churches of Christ, the Church of Religious Science...the list goes on. Why should one set of churches have one legal right, and the others be denied?

Two or three years ago I purchased John McCain's autobiography "Faith of My Fathers"; it taught me a lot. I learned a lot about McCain, too. Nobody can read that autobiography and remain unmoved. I sent the book on to my brother-in-law, a WWII veteran, who appreciated the book and the thought. He sent the book on to someone else. And so on and on. There are a lot of us who are grateful for McCain and others like him. Most of us would not have been able to manage to get through such an experience as his. I wouldn't.

There are those who argue -- and rightfully so, of course -- that having been a prisoner of war does not make one automatically qualified to be President of the United States. Neither does it make one automatically agree with every viewpoint of the prisoner of war. I don't. But, then, it would be a rare thing for anyone to agree with everyone about everything.

It's interesting to compare the respective backgrounds of the main players on this particular stage.

Thank you for your posts this afternopon. It is precisely because of stories like yours in fresno that I believe we must work even harder in the heartland. I don't think I want Bako to become a little LA or SF...then it would lose it's nique country flair that makes it feel homey. But I would like to see it shed it's stereotype, the redneck, hick town.

And catpaw, if that really is you, I am a dyke, if you wnat to be rude, and yes, that is pretty much how I get attention. I'd likwe to point out, though, that the main reason I get attention is because those who are intolerant point their fingers at me (and others like me) and scream to the heavens about the filth they think I am. It is only in rising to address that, that I am in the spotlight.

It is my hope that there will come a day when extremist anti-gay zealots are fewer and fewer, and far less powerful than they are today. My ultimate dream is a world where being gay is like being left-handed; just another variation of normal in the world. If my neighbors didn't care, if people didn't have to worry about getting or keeping a job, if they had all the right they are legally entitled to...then I could stay home more, maybe work in my garden or actually get to watch the World Series. My name could begin to fade into history tomorrow, and nothing would make me happier. But the extremists are still speaking, loudly, and trying very hard to ensure that I will have second-class status forever. I can't very well just sit and watch that happen.

Not only that, but for people who consider marriage a religious or spiritual rite as well as a legal arrangement, it's a question of freedom of religion.

As a Wiccan, we often refer to marriage as Handfasting. However, it's still marriage, and as a spiritual tradition it is our right to define our rites, solemnizations, and sacraments, and if the government is going to give legal privilege and recognition to one religious rite, it must treat all equivalent rites equally.

Most Wiccans have no objection to handfasting partners of the same gender.

I can't understand why people from LA would want to come to Bakersfield to eat. I lived in LA (Santa Monica) and they have the finest restaurants. Classy with excellent food. Lots of seafood, which is almost non existent in Bakersfield. Greek restaurants, Thai, you name it. These people must actually be from Compton or they are coming here to make fun of the lack of good food. Now granted, we have good Mexican food and one great Indian restaurant but.......

Nancy, I appreciate your tone, but I wonder if you realize how much is legally tied to the M-word marriage. Just a couple of examples:

1. If my wife should pre-decease me, I could not collect a penny on her Social Security benefits, although she has paid in for thirty years. A surviving wife of a man could easily do that. The Federal Government will not recognize a domestic partner or even those married in Massachusetts or California.

2. If we should take a trip outside California, and one of us, say her, should require hospitalization while unconscious, the hospital would legally be bound to ask her mother for permission to proceed. Married heterosexual couples can speak for each other, but domestic partners cannot.

3. If my wife were a veteran, she would lose all medical benefits from the VA by entering into either a domestic partnership or marriage with me in California, under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." A heterosexual marriage would not kill these benefits.

There are over 1000 rights, state and federal that straight couples have when they marry. Gay couples in California and Massachusetts do get some of those rights in their home states, but all federal rights are forbidden.

I know a woman who married herr partner of twelve years back in June. She quickly set about changing her name, and Social Security agreed to accept California marriage licenses for name changes only. So she changed her SS card, her driver's license, credit cards and so on. Then she sent a copy to the State Department for a passport, and they rejected her. (Kept her check, by the way.) They said they would not honor gay or lesbian marriage licenses from California, although they are still accepting them for straight couples. So now she has one identity at home and another on her passport. Wonder if she should even try to get back into this country after a trip abroad...

Obviously this creates a second-class status for gay and lesbian couples, which is patenttly forbidden by the 14th Amendment. we cannot have a legal system that says, "you over here are accepted into this protection, but you over there are not." Marriage must be for everyone.
