Settleing in...

Man it has already been three months since moving out of California and setteling into life in Missouri.

I think I'm getting used to the sllooww pace but I have to admit one giant thing ....There is NO good places to eat in this little town....I am not kidding unless you travel 45 min in either direction you wont find anything to make your mouth water..I miss Casa Munioz, China Palace,Tahoe Joe's,and Shakeys Pizza.

I am a lover of great food and am starving out here.I have thought of the freezing and shipping in dried ice but I just dont think that would work.So I hope I can come home for a visit soon. Ha ha!! I am a fat girl and think I will always love the food in Bakersfield.

During his visit to the United States the Pope met with President Clinton. Instead of just an hour as scheduled, the meeting went on for two days. Finally, a weary President Clinton emerged to face the waiting news media. The President was smiling and announced the summit was a resounding success. He said he and the Pope agreed on 80% of the matters they discussed. Then Mr. Clinton declared he was going home to the White House to be with his family.

      A few minutes later the Pope came out to make his statement. He looked tired, discouraged and was practically in tears. Sadly he announced his meeting with the President was a failure. Incredulous, one reporter asked, "But your Holiness, President Clinton just announced the summit was a great success and the two of you agreed on 80% of the items discussed".

      Exasperated, the Pope answered, "Yes, but we were talking about the Ten Commandments."

No, god didn't do that, a human being did. Given how lottery winners often turn out, it was probably smart of him to get rid of the damned check, but I'd have given it to some organization with a stronger grip on reality.

I hope they thanked *HIM* and not "god." "Mysterious ways" means that half the time, prayer works in situations where the desired outcome has a 50/50 probability of occurring.

Details:

On Tuesday, 8-26-08, Deputies assigned to the East Bakersfield Substation arrested four suspects in East Bakersfield and the Oildale area during a directed enforcement operation targeting drug activity at several houses. Concerned citizens provided deputies with anonymous tips, which led to the arrests.

Jose Gutierrez (18) was arrested and released with a citation after he was found to be in possession of marijuana and Eric Arnison (21) was arrested and booked into jail for possession of marijuana and a previous warrant. Both were contacted in the 800 block of Blossom Drive.

Debra McClain (29) and Christina Miller (22) were arrested in a residence located in the 100 block of Decatur Avenue after deputies found them to be in possession of narcotics paraphernalia. McClain also had a previous warrant. Both were booked into the Central Receiving Facility.

Approximately one pound of marijuana and four stolen checks were found in a residence located in the 300 block of Troy Street, however there were no arrests because deputies were unable to determine who the items belonged to.

But Bakosphere is here to laud the Kern County Parks and Recreation department and specifically director Bob Lerude.

He solved a delicate problem with a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solution.

Elimination of Rights proposition loses ground again in latest poll

The Field Poll published on July 18, 2008, showed opponents of Proposition 8 leading by a margin of 51% opposed, to 42 % in favor. Today's poll by the non-partisan Public Policy institute show an increased spread with 54% opposed, and proponents dropping to 40% in favor of The Elimination of Right amendment.

SAN FRANCISCO, California, August 27, 2008 — A majority of California’s likely voters oppose Proposition 8, the November ballot measure that would eliminate gay marriage, according to a statewide survey released today by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) with funding from The James Irvine Foundation. Likely voters are divided on two other closely watched measures – one that would require a parent to be notified before a teenager has an abortion and one that would take the power to draw legislative district lines away from the legislature.

As the fall campaign season begins, Californians are united in their pessimism about the direction of the state and nation and in their worries about the economy. But they are split sharply on key issues ranging from the state budget to health care and the war in Iraq. Their views on the three state ballot issues – Propositions 4, 8, and 11 – reveal the fault lines among voters.

Proposition 8, which would amend the state constitution to eliminate same-sex marriage, is favored by 40 percent and opposed by 54 percent of the state’s likely voters. Democratic (66%) and independent likely voters (59%) are against it, and Republican likely voters are in favor (60%). The last time voters decided this issue – in 2000 – they approved a ban on same-sex marriages by a wide margin (61% yes, 39% no). After the state Supreme Court ruled that ban unconstitutional, supporters of Proposition 8 qualified the initiative for the 2008 ballot.

Opposition to Proposition 8 this year is not an indication of a dramatic shift in voters’ opinions. Asked whether they favor letting gay and lesbian couples marry, likely voters are evenly split (47% in favor, 47% opposed) and have been since August 2005. Also playing a role in the November outcome is how strongly voters feel about the issue. A majority of likely voters (57%) in favor of Proposition 8 say it is a very important issue to them, while less than half (44%) of those opposed to the measure consider it a very important issue.

“It’s early in the campaign season, and in the end, the vote on this measure, like the other two, could be hard to predict,” says Mark Baldassare, PPIC president and CEO. “Overall views on gay marriage have not budged in a year. Californians who plan to vote for Proposition 8 appear to hold that view with greater intensity than the opposition -- which means they are very motivated to vote.”

What happened to the trees near the Ben Austin Senior Center?

Q: I live near McKee Road in south Bakersfield just down the street from the Ben Austin Senior Center.
Recently, all the trees behind the center were cut. I thought this area was a planned city park and was hoping the mature trees would be incorporated into the park.
What are the plans for this open area?

A: The city and county discussed putting a park next to the senior center, said Bob Lerude, director of the county’s parks and recreation department.
But for now, it’s an idea without financial backing.
Initial estimates for a neighborhood park with a play area and picnic shelters were about $2.5 million, Lerude said.
But that figure could change based on park amenities. The city and county haven’t identified where the money would come from to develop a park.
Trees along McKee were cut down within the past 30 days, Lerude said, because they were dead.
If the site becomes a park, more trees would be planted.

I especially like the hysterical woman who complained her free speech rights were violated but after media questioning she says, no, she wasn't even arrested or even asked for her ID.

one barking nutcase couldn't get enough of himself and shouted "Kill Michelle Malkin." Obviously, no one felt the same way and the "Kill Michelle" moment went the same way as levitating the Federal Reserve building he attempted.

the pro-abortion anti-counter protest is also a riot, or, maybe that should be changed to anything but a riot and more akin to chickens milling about the barnyard. One protester said she didn't want "a f**king abortion clinic in my neighborhood!"

DENVER -- Never was so much hype created by so few to simulate the appearance of so many.

The hard-core left vowed to turn out 50,000 protesters for the Democratic National Convention this week. They pledged to "Re-create '68" and cause the kind of tear-gas-infused revolutionary havoc that marked the DNC in Chicago four decades ago. Police prepared for the worst riots. Media from around the world anticipated the best pictures.

But when rhetorical push came to real-life shove, the nostalgic, Marx-adoring organizers of Re-create '68 seem to have mustered no more than, oh, 68 bodies. Their presence here is dwarfed by the massive show of police, press and camera-toting looky-loos. You can't take a picture without someone else taking pictures of everyone else taking pictures of not much else getting in your frame.

The chaos-inducers' mouths were a mile wide. Their crowds have been an inch deep. What's left of the leftover '60s movement is all sizzle and no steak. Or veggie burger. Deep-fried tofu. Whatever.

At an abortion protest/counter-protest on Saturday in front of a Planned Parenthood mega-facility, I counted fewer than a dozen pro-abortion activists milling about with three times as many media members. The majority of demonstrators were more exercised about the war in Iraq than about the vaunted woman's right to choose death for her unborn child -- the stated focus of the demonstration.

And while Democratic Party Chair Howard Dean excoriates the Republican Party as the "white" party, I saw only one non-white agitator among the pro-abortion gaggle. (This goes for the rest of the Re-create '68 populace, too. It's as pale and colorless as a Colorado snowfall.) Across the street from the Planned Parenthood event, however, were many incensed black- and brown-skinned moms -- incensed that an abortion mill had been built right across from the park where their children practice football and swing on the playground set.

One of the moms said bluntly: "I don't want a f**king abortion clinic in my neighborhood!" A Hispanic mother added: "It's against the Catholic Church." (Are you listening, Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi?) When asked about her views on abortion, a black mother of three told me simply from her minivan: "I don't believe in it."

Speaking of disbelief, behold the dregs of the self-pitying anti-war movement. The white-flag crowd had so much trouble getting coverage of its worn-out, giant puppet-toting, drum-beating, ratty lingerie-flashing, Bush-cursing antics on Sunday that a sympathizer at the Associated Press devoted an entire sob story to the apathy. "CodePink faces tough odds for public's attention," the AP's Christine Simmons mourned. Perhaps if more than 10 of them showed up at one time to do something other than scream about BusHitler or bawl about detained Gitmo jihadists, they'd have better luck.

At Denver's City Center on Monday night, law enforcement authorities encountered about 100 aimless grievance-mongers -- self-described as "anti-capitalist, anti-fascist, anti-war" -- who finally fixed on something concrete to protest when their friends were arrested for refusing to disperse. "My freedom of speech was suppressed," one protester complained as she spoke freely to the media and acknowledged that she hadn't been arrested or asked to show identification.

In the melee, a few responsible adults were accidentally hit with pepper spray. Otherwise, Denver blogger Charlie Martin, who was covering the scene for Pajamas Media, quipped: "It was the world's most boring riot."

Finally, in a sorry attempt to re-create Abbie Hoffman's satirical stunt aimed at levitating the Pentagon, a dozen Re-create '68 stragglers dressed up like the cast of "Harry Potter," wielded magic wands and joined hands to float the Denver Mint. The Mint stayed firmly on the ground. To salvage the abysmal turnout, an unhinged contingent of 9/11 conspiracy theorists started barking at me. One buffoon shouted, "Kill Michelle Malkin," while the levitation experts chanted, "Peace and Justice!" and a wizard paraded around in his "Arrest Bush" T-shirt with Che Guevara promoters tossing fake quarters in the air.

To paraphrase a favorite left-wing bumper sticker slogan, discombobulation is the highest form of patriotism. Blame bankrupt ideology, not the altitude.

Police release on motorcycle crash

BPD NEWS RELEASE

FATAL TRAFFIC ACCIDENT
On 08/28/08, at about 0445 hours, officers of the Bakersfield Police
Department responded to the intersection of White Lane and Pin Oak Park
Boulevard for a major injury traffic accident.
Investigation revealed a red and white Honda CBR 600 motorcycle was
traveling eastbound on White Lane west of Pin Oak Boulevard. The
motorcycle struck the south curb line of White lane and continued onto
the sidewalk. As the motorcycle crossed a grass easement it struck a
utility box and a street sign. The motorcycle continued across the
southbound lanes of Pin Oak Park Boulevard ejecting the rider, striking
the center divider and coming to rest against the east curb line.
The motorcycle rider sustained major injuries and died at the scene. He
was identified as Johnny Solorio, 20 of Bakersfield.
It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor. This investigation is
ongoing. Anyone with information on this accident is urged to contact
Officer Dillon at 326-3967.

I realize those pesky 100-degree days may make a surprise appearance in September, but the leaves are littering the yard and the worst is over.

Market Overview in August '08

Many sources are reporting a slight upswing in the market. What do they base this on? In the local real estate market we have seen our absorption rate drop over the past several months, which is really cool. This indicates that more homes are selling than in recent months than are being listed. We are burning through the inventory of homes. Buyers are feeling confident in our market and entering both as first time homeowners and investors.

The traditional sellers that would be the move up buyers are in a bit of a quandary if they have to sell in order to purchase. The prices that the foreclosure and short sale homes are being listed and sold for are significantly lower than most sellers would be willing to part with their homes for. Since many sellers are not in a position to reduce the price of their home to compete with these distress sale homes, they are forced to hold on to them until the prices come up a bit. This, of course, creates a problem or a bottleneck effect in our market. The folks that still have the credit scores to secure a new home loan often can't sell their existing home to complete the transaction.

REO is a term we use to identify the Real Estate Owned, or rather foreclosure properties. These are moving the strongest at this time representing over half of the local sales at this time. There is still a lack of coordination in the Short Sale sector, but that seems to be improving. Short sale is the term to identify the homes that are being sold, or attempting to be sold for less than what is owed to the bank. If the planets are aligned, the banks may agree to take less for a property than what they are owed, but this process typically takes longer than the REO sales and the traditional transactions. The banks are showing swifter responses than earlier this year, but since these transactions are still taking a long time, I am seeing a lot of sellers lose hope and in frustration, are simply walking away from the properties and letting them foreclose. I am concerned about this practice. No one really knows for sure what kind of wrath may befall at some point in the future. I always recommend that anyone in this situation consult the appropriate professionals, such as CPA, tax lawyers and so on.

I haven't been on Bakersfield.com for a while except for VERY sporadically. It feels good to be back -

Where have I been?

In a nutshell:" I have lived a lot of life, a lot of angst and I think i have come out for the best. I have wondered during the past eighteen months or so how to shape or form this blog - I wasn't finding exactly the same joy in writing about solely my adventures in local theater and I didn't want to only post poetry or my journeys down my eclectic spiritual path and for a long time, the last thing I wanted to do was rehash my struggles with the local educational bureaucracy in dealing with my son's education.

Lotsa grief there.

So now to the other side. I am wanting more and more to write here of all of me, not sequestering one aspect of me for another aspect of me. The whole of me is a Mother, is an Artist, is an Actor/Director, is an Activist, is a Life and Creativity Coach, is a Writer, is a poet, is a student, is a teacher.

It isn't just my arm that writes poetry or just my uterus that is a mother. It is the whole me, the all me that does these things.

I will do my best to write of all of me, to write consistently, to share my thoughts and meanderings with folks who are interested here on Bakersfield.com.

Ahhh, that feels good.

Recently discovered satellite galaxies described as “Puffy balls in space” may be orbs of dark matter. And these may be the explanation for the smaller orbs sometimes appearing in photographs, even the explanation for the many stories about ghosts and spirits, angels and demons belonging to a dimension apart from the physical limitations of space and time and confirming my belief life is of God and not a result of the separate creation of the physical universe as described in Genesis.

But before sharing this recent and astounding discovery, apart from prejudice there is no mistaking the quality of the writings finally accepted into the canon of Scripture compared to other writings that were rejected, though there are undoubtedly things of historical fact contained in some of these extracanonical writings. There is the continued need for textual criticism that helps put things in historical perspective and separates the wheat from the chaff. However, over the many years of my own Biblical studies my beliefs and opinions have changed about many things found in the Bible but there has been one constant; and that is the objective fact there are no comparable writings to be found anywhere else in recorded history.

The Bible despite some difficulties and discrepancies is quite unique and stands well apart and above all other writings of humankind, and I have no doubt some of its writers did have a special relationship to God and imparted things God intended people to know, and some especially chosen of God wrote these things down passing them on to others. That some of these things began as oral tradition before being written would explain facts lost to antiquity but resulting in stories about the Creation, Adam and Eve, The Fall, the Deluge and others open to interpretation, but still based on facts.

One of the several things that confound critics of the Bible is that the writings are for the most part free of many fanciful stories current during the times in which the Bible was being written, among these some of the “Jewish fables” to which the Apostle Paul referred. Even though the Hellenic influence is evident in places for example, the various mythologies and fabulous stories belonging to such mythologies are for the greater part missing in the Received Text. Comparisons have been made from various myths in regard to some miracles described in the Bible, but upon close examination the Biblical accounts of such things are superior to these other accounts, particularly in the quality of the writings themselves.

If someone were to take it upon themselves to make up a story about Moses they would be hard pressed to provide the many details found in Scripture and to tell it with the same authority of veracity as the original. The same can be said for the stories in the beginning chapters of Genesis. But the stories surrounding the birth and life of Jesus together with the rest of the New Testament would be the most daunting task of all.

First of all, what would be the motive for anyone undertaking such a task? If it entered the mind of someone to make up such stories what would be gained by their doing so, and how would they convince others to follow along? History is replete with charlatans and false messiahs, but eventually they are found out. No, there is simply too much of veracity in the New Testament for all the writings to be discounted as intent to deceive. And it could be as simple as the words of those officers sent to take Jesus by force and refusing to do so because “Never man spake like this man.”

One of many reasons I take the Bible very seriously in many places is because of scientific discoveries continually being made that affirm spiritual beliefs, such as the “Puffy balls in space.”

Galaxy surprise sheds light on dark matter. Galaxies circling the Milky Way pack about the same mass, study shows: By Clara Moskowitz, Space.com: Updated 1:53 p.m. PT, Wed., Aug. 27, 2008: A study of small galaxies circling around the Milky Way found that while they range dramatically in brightness, they all surprisingly pack about the same mass. The work suggests there is a minimum size for galaxies, and it could shed light on mysterious dark matter. Spinning around the Milky Way are at least 23 pint-sized galaxies, each shining with the light of anywhere from a thousand to a billion suns. Though each of these galaxies is very dim compared to large galaxies like our own, they span a large range in brightness. Astronomers led by Louis Strigari of the University of California-Irvine studied the movements of individual stars in these satellite galaxies to determine the mass of each galaxy. "What we found was astonishing, which was that they all had the same mass," said researcher James Bullock, a UC-Irvine astrophysicist. "It's not what we were expecting — we were really taken off guard." Loaded with dark matter: The finding could help explain the mysterious stuff called dark matter and how it affects the formation of galaxies. Nobody knows what dark matter is, but its presence is revealed by gravity that is not produced by the regular matter that can be seen. Despite their wide-ranging brightnesses, all of the 23 satellite galaxies around the Milky Way seem to have a central mass of 10 million times that of the sun. And what's more, almost all of that mass seems to be made up of dark matter, with just the tiniest smidgen of visible matter producing stars. Two juveniles plead guilty to killing 81-year-old man

Two boys involved in the fatal beating of an 81-year-old man in June pleaded guilty to murder and other charges Thursday morning.

William Wandick III and Robert Smith III, both 13, will be sentenced on Sept. 12, Deputy District Attorney Craig Smith said. He said they could actually be sentenced to life in prison, but because they are under 14 the longest they could be kept behind bars is until they’re 25.

The two others involved in the beating — Demitris King, 15, and Nathaniel Johnson Jr., 14 — are scheduled to have their fitness hearings on Sept. 12.

Madonna may be a shrewd business woman, a smooth, ebullient performer and entertainer, and she's come out with some pretty catchy, bouncy dance grooves. She can even pull off slower songs like Take a Bow. And the girl has staying power. Nobody can knock her in that respect.

But Madonna's never had a great singing voice. Therefore, she's always resorted to cheap gimmicks to sell herself. Shock and awe is what I'm talking about. Playing tongue-tug-of-war with Britney and, more recently, hooking up Justin Timberlake, Britney's ex, an artist young enough to be her grandson, has paid off big time. Though her albums rarely crack the top 40 anymore, she was able to hit the gym and look pretty slim and fit just in time for a video shoot that featured her latest number one hit, 4 Minutes.

She's always used gimmicks to get across her ill-conceived political messages as well. Her latest trick was no exception, and this was the feedback she received from the ADL (in Market Watch):

After last night's deft Democratic performance, rife with propaganda, we'll need this song

Bill Clinton's speech was nothing short of brilliant. And though you would have never known that just a few months ago he would have been proud to have shared the ticket with McCain, Biden's speech wasn't too shaby either. Yes, the speeches were built upon a foundation of falsehoods and propaganda, but they were both deftly delivered.

I believe the deftly delivered speeches, and the "surprise," special guest appearance by Obama, energized the base, and may provide the Democrats with the momentum they so desperately needed after two consecutive "bumpless" nights.

I must give them credit, they did everything possible to re-write history to conform with their John McSame, John McBush myth. Yes, McCain has towed the party line to draw in the party faithful for the purposes of his campaign, but if you look at his record, on the whole, he hasn't fallen in lockstep with either party. Rather, he has been his own man, and has lived up to his reputation as a Maverick.

So now that the bar has been raised, and an invigorated sense of momentum has been created for the Democrats, Republicans will need this song to remind everyone that no matter how hard the Democratic spinsters try to re-create history, John McCain is, and always will be:

Police searching for attempted murder suspect

BAKERSFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE

ATTEMPTED MURDER SUSPECT AT LARGE

At midnight on the night of 8-27-2008, officers of the Bakersfield
Police Department responded to the apartment complex at 1201 40th Street
regarding two gunshot victims.

Officers determined several people were standing near a vehicle in the
north parking lot of the complex. A lone male approached and, without
warning, fired a number of rounds from a handgun into the group. The
suspect fled on foot from the scene. Anthony Fuller, 21, of Bakersfield,
sustained a minor gunshot wound to his arm. A two-year old girl, also of
Bakersfield, was struck by gunfire and suffered a serious injury to her
left leg.

Both gunshot victims were treated at Kern Medical Center. Due to the
serious nature of her injuries, the juvenile was transferred to Valley
Children’s Hospital in Fresno.

Investigators have identified the suspect as:

Despite promises to remain impartial and tell the truth about what really happened, Inside Edition unsurprisingly characterized Alex Jones’ DNC confrontation of Michelle Malkin as a “hateful attack,” while the Dallas Morning News engaged in outright libel by claiming Jones had chanted “kill Michelle Malkin,” a brazen lie that is still doing the rounds on neo-con blogs.

Alex Jones and his crew filmed their meeting with the Inside Edition team and it was broadcast live on the Internet yesterday. The Inside Edition reporters were uninterested in footage which clearly shows provocateurs completely unaffiliated with Alex Jones chanting inflammatory statements, as well as Malkin’s own photographer making a false report to Denver police claiming Jones had made death threats toward Malkin and punched her bodyguard, when her bodyguard is on tape assaulting Jones and his crew.

Inside Edition characterized the incident as a “hateful attack” on Malkin, the poor little victim, while failing to explain any of the reasons behind why Jones confronted her in the first place - namely the fact that she is an advocate of torture, runs defense for puppy killers, and argues in her own book that dissidents and other undesirables, including Arab-Americans, should be rounded up and jailed in internment camps.

The Inside Edition blerb describes Malkin as a “conservative author and political commentator,” while it labels Jones as a “controversial radio personality” who “ranted and raved” and engaged in “virulent verbal bashing” while “on the attack”.

Sounds about as fair and balanced as Fox News.

Did Alex Jones shout at Michelle Malkin? During some parts of the incident yes, during others he attempted to talk to her rationally. The point is, Inside Edition, as well as every other establishment press outlet that has reported on the incident, has uniformly failed to highlight why Michelle Malkin deserved every earful she got.

An Associated Content article describes Malkin as, “A short, attractive, pleasant lady of Philippine descent.”

Pleasant? This is the same woman who went too far even for Bill O’Reilly’s liking when she infamously proclaimed “boo-hoo!” in response to news that Guantanamo Bay detainees (many of whom are innocent children) had killed themselves.

Just look at what even arch-neo-con Geraldo Rivera had to say about her.

“Michelle Malkin is the most vile, hateful commentator I’ve ever met in my life. She actually believes that neighbors should start snitching out neighbors, and we should be deporting people. It’s good she’s in D.C. and I’m in NY. I’d spit on her if I saw her.”

Malkin’s journalistic prowess has been off-target so many times that her website, Hot Air, is a laughing stock on the Internet.

In November 2006, Malkin embarked on a campaign to question the existence of an Iraqi policeman, Jamil Hussein, who has been used as a source by the Associated Press. Hussein turned out to be very real and Malkin was forced to retract her bizarre inference that he was imaginary.

Likewise, when footage emerged of Marines throwing a puppy off a cliff in Iraq, Malkin suggested that the puppy was in fact already dead or even a CGI-manipulated fake. Neo-Con news outlets continue to embarrass themselves by falsely claiming that Jones or people affiliated with him advocated the murder of Michelle Malkin. In doing so they are only shaming themselves and letting everyone know exactly what they are - lying hacks whose only agenda is to smear those that dare question their jack-booted propagandist Fox News idols like Michelle Malkin.
